The right mattress size comes down to two questions: how many people are sleeping in it, and how much room is left after the bed is in the room. Use the mattress size chart below to compare the six standard mattress sizes we stock at LA Mattress, with dimensions, who each one fits, and the minimum bedroom size where it feels right.
Mattress size chart
| Size | Dimensions (W × L) | Best for | Minimum room size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38” × 75” | Kids, single adults, guest rooms | 7 × 10 ft |
| Twin XL | 38” × 80” | Tall single sleepers (6’0”+), college dorms, split-king setup | 7 × 11 ft |
| Full / Double | 54” × 75” | Single sleepers who like room; tight couples | 9 × 10 ft |
| Queen | 60” × 80” | Most couples; the default if you’re unsure | 10 × 11 ft |
| King | 76” × 80” | Couples with pets, kids, or one restless sleeper | 12 × 13 ft |
| California King | 72” × 84” | Tall sleepers (6’2”+); long, narrow bedrooms | 12 × 14 ft |
Twin — 38” × 75”
The smallest standard adult size. A twin size mattress fits kids past the toddler stage, single adults who don't want to take up the whole room, and guest bedrooms. Two twins side-by-side make a king-sized space without committing to a king mattress — useful in older homes with narrow doorways and stairs.

Twin XL — 38” × 80”
Same width as a Twin, five inches longer. The standard college-dorm size, also the right pick for taller single sleepers (over 6'0”) who don't need extra width. Two Twin XL mattresses paired on a split-king adjustable base give each partner independent recline control on a king-sized footprint.

Full / Double — 54” × 75”
The traditional “double bed” — wider than a Twin, same length. Good for single sleepers who like to spread out, or for tight couples (younger couples in smaller LA apartments often start here). It's a comfortable solo size and a tolerable two-person size for short stretches.
Best for bedrooms 9×10 ft and up. Shop Full mattresses →
Queen — 60” × 80”
The most popular size we sell, by a wide margin. Six inches wider than a Full, five inches longer. Comfortably fits two adult sleepers with room for a pet at the foot, and works in most apartment-sized master bedrooms. If you're buying for a couple and you're not sure which size to pick, start here.
Best for bedrooms 10×11 ft and up. Shop Queen mattresses →
King — 76” × 80”
The king mattress size sits between queen and California king — the king size mattress dimensions are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. That's sixteen inches wider than a Queen, enough that two adults can sleep without crowding each other. The right king mattress size if either partner is a restless sleeper, if you co-sleep with kids or pets, or if you simply want the most room money can buy without going taller. Note: doorways and stairs in older LA homes sometimes won't fit a king — measure before you order, or pick a split king (two Twin XLs).
Best for bedrooms 12×13 ft and up. Shop King mattresses →
California King — 72” × 84”
Four inches narrower than a King but four inches longer — the right pick if either sleeper is over 6'2”, or if the bedroom is long and narrow. A Cal King fits where a regular King won't (long rectangular rooms), and gives taller sleepers room for their feet without dangling.

How to pick the size for your room
Leave at least 24 inches of walking space on the sides of the bed, and 36 inches at the foot if a dresser or closet is there. Measure the room first, then pick the largest mattress that still leaves that clearance. In doubt, size up — it's the one piece of furniture you'll regret undersizing.
Finding your perfect size
Finding the perfect size comes down to your room footprint plus how many people share the bed. For most couples, a queen (60 inches wide by 80 inches long) hits the sweet spot. A king (76 inches wide by 80 inches long) or California king (72 inches wide by 84 inches long) is the right call if you want more room — just remember that king bedding and California king bedding aren't interchangeable. For solo sleepers or a guest room, a twin size or full is plenty.

Mattress size FAQs
The 14 questions shoppers ask us most often about bed sizes — answered.
What size is a 60×80 bed?
A 60" × 80" mattress is a Queen — the most popular size in the US. In feet that's 5 ft × 6 ft 8 in, or 152 × 203 cm. It fits most couples and works in a bedroom as small as 10 × 10 ft. Shop Queen mattresses.
What are king mattress dimensions in feet?
A standard King mattress measures 6 ft 4 in × 6 ft 8 in (76" × 80" / 193 × 203 cm). California King is narrower but longer: 6 ft × 7 ft (72" × 84"). Both need a bedroom of at least 12 × 12 ft to walk around comfortably. Shop King mattresses.
King vs California King — what's the difference?
King is wider (76") but shorter (80"). California King is narrower (72") but longer (84"). Pick King if you want shoulder-room for two sleepers; pick Cal King if either sleeper is over 6 ft tall or your bedroom is long-and-narrow. Read the full King vs Cal King guide.
What size is a twin bed?
A standard Twin mattress is 38" × 75" — about 3 ft 2 in × 6 ft 3 in (96.5 × 190.5 cm). It's the smallest standard mattress size and the right choice for kids, single adults in studio apartments, and guest rooms. Shop Twin mattresses.
Twin vs Twin XL — what's the difference?
Twin XL is the same width as Twin (38") but 5" longer — 38" × 80" instead of 38" × 75". Pick Twin XL if the sleeper is over 5'6" or if you're furnishing a college dorm (most dorms spec Twin XL frames). Shop Twin XL mattresses.
What are full size mattress dimensions?
A Full (also called Double) mattress is 54" × 75" — 4 ft 6 in × 6 ft 3 in (137 × 190.5 cm). It's 16" wider than a Twin but the same length, so it gives solo sleepers more elbow room without needing a much bigger bedroom. Shop Full mattresses.
Is there a mattress size chart in feet?
Yes — the reference table above lists every standard mattress size in inches, feet, and centimeters. Twin is 3 ft 2 in × 6 ft 3 in; Queen is 5 ft × 6 ft 8 in; King is 6 ft 4 in × 6 ft 8 in; California King is 6 ft × 7 ft.
How big is a Queen size bed in feet?
A Queen is 5 ft × 6 ft 8 in (60" × 80" or 152 × 203 cm). It's 6" wider than a Full and 5" longer, which is why it's the most-bought US mattress — enough room for two without dominating the bedroom.
What size mattress is best for couples?
Queen (60" × 80") is the most-popular couples size — fits most US bedrooms and most bedding budgets. Upgrade to King (76" × 80") if either sleeper tosses, you co-sleep with kids/pets, or your room is at least 12 × 12 ft.
What's the smallest bedroom that fits a Queen?
A 10 × 10 ft room is the working minimum for a Queen — the bed itself takes 5 × 6.7 ft and you need ~24" walk-around space on at least three sides. If you can't hit 10 × 10, drop down to a Full (54" × 75") to keep the room functional.
What is a Split King and who needs one?
A Split King is two Twin XL mattresses (38" × 80" each) side-by-side, totaling the same footprint as a regular King (76" × 80"). Each half can be raised or reclined independently on an adjustable base, so couples with different sleep positions or firmness preferences each get their own profile. Shop Split King mattresses.
Do you deliver every size — or do I move it myself?
Free white-glove delivery is included across Los Angeles County on every size we stock, with same-day setup available on most in-stock orders. We bring the bed in, set it on your frame, and haul the old one away. No tying it to your roof. Find your nearest LA showroom.
I'm not sure which size fits my room — what should I do?
Take the 2-minute sleep quiz — it asks about sleeper count, room size, and how you sleep, then recommends a specific size and mattress feel. Or call any LA showroom and we'll walk you through it; we can also measure your room with you over video. Take the sleep quiz.
What's the largest standard mattress size?
For mainstream bedding-compatible sizes, California King is the longest (84") and King is the widest (76"). Beyond standard, you can custom-order a Wyoming King (84" × 84") or Alaskan King (108" × 108") — call us if you need either; they aren't stocked on the floor.
