Mattresses have gotten taller. Sheets mostly have not. That gap is why so many people buy a nice sheet set, wrestle it onto the bed, and wake up at 3am with a bare corner and an elastic band digging into their hip. Deep pocket sheets exist to fix exactly that problem, and picking the right ones takes about two minutes if you know what to measure.
What are deep pocket sheets?
"Deep pocket" refers only to the fitted sheet, and only to one dimension of it: the depth of the corner pockets, meaning how far the sheet wraps down the sides of the mattress before the elastic pulls it under. A standard fitted sheet has a shallow pocket. A deep pocket sheet has a taller one, so it can cover a thicker mattress and still tuck underneath with room to spare.
The flat sheet, pillowcases and shams in the set do not change. Only the fitted sheet does. That is worth knowing, because it means you can buy a single replacement fitted sheet in a deeper pocket and keep the rest of the set you already own.
How deep is a deep pocket sheet?
There is no industry standard, and the labels shift from brand to brand, but the market roughly sorts into three tiers:

Because the naming is inconsistent, ignore the words on the front of the package and find the actual inch measurement on the back or in the listing details. A sheet labeled "deep pocket" by one brand may be shallower than another brand's standard.
How to measure your mattress the right way
Do not measure the mattress by itself. Measure everything the fitted sheet has to go over.
- Strip the bed down to the bare mattress, or to the mattress plus whatever will stay on permanently.
- Stand a tape measure vertically at the side of the mattress, at the midpoint rather than at a corner, and measure from the top surface straight down to the bottom seam.
- Add the thickness of anything that lives between the mattress and the sheet: a mattress topper, a padded protector, a wool pad. A three inch topper turns a 12 inch mattress into a 15 inch sleeping surface, and the sheet has to clear all of it.
- Add one to two inches of slack so the elastic has something to grab underneath. A sheet that just barely reaches the bottom edge will pop off.

Who actually needs them
- Pillow top and Euro top owners. The extra padded layer sewn onto the top adds real height. Most pillow top mattresses land in deep or extra deep territory on their own. Our explainer on what a pillow top is covers how that layer is built.
- Anyone using a topper. This is the most common reason people suddenly need deeper sheets, and the one they usually do not anticipate.
- Hybrid mattress owners. Coil unit plus multiple foam comfort layers adds up fast. Fourteen inches is ordinary now.
- Split king and adjustable bed users. You need twin XL fitted sheets in the right depth, two of them, and a sheet that stays put through position changes.
Conversely, if you have a slim foam mattress or an older innerspring at 10 or 11 inches, deep pocket sheets are the wrong buy. Excess fabric bunches under your back, wrinkles, and slides around all night.
How to keep a fitted sheet from popping off
Depth is the main variable, but a few other things decide whether the sheet stays on:
- Elastic all the way around beats corner-only elastic. Full perimeter elastic holds tension evenly. Corner elastic gives up first on a heavy mattress.
- Look for a deep-pocket sheet with corner straps or a labeled top and bottom. Straps clip under the mattress and stop the sheet from creeping.
- Consider sheet suspenders if you already own sheets that are slightly too shallow and you are not ready to replace them. They are a workaround, not a fix, but they buy you time.

One thing to check before you buy sheets at all
If your fitted sheet has recently started popping off a mattress it used to fit, the sheet may not be the problem. Elastic loses tension after a couple of years of hot washes, and a sagging mattress changes shape in a way that pulls at the corners.
