Worn-out sheets do not have to go in the trash. Here is what is worth donating, who actually accepts linens, how textile recycling works and what to do with the rest.

Every linen closet has them: the set with the thinning spot near the foot, the fitted sheet whose elastic gave up, the flat sheet from a bed size nobody in the house owns anymore. Most of it ends up in a trash bag, which is a shame, because almost none of it needed to.
Sheets are one of the easier household textiles to keep out of landfill. The trick is sorting them honestly first, because where a sheet should go depends entirely on what condition it is actually in.
Be strict here. Donating something unusable just moves your disposal problem onto a charity that has to pay to throw it away.
Policies vary by location more than people expect, so one phone call before you drive saves everyone time.
Wash everything before you donate it, fold the set together, and label the size. An unlabeled pile of mixed linens takes staff time to sort, and that is the real constraint most charities are working under.
The middle pile is where most people give up and reach for the trash, which is unnecessary.
Textile recycling exists specifically for fabric that nobody can reuse, and it is widely under-used because most people assume the donation bin is the only option.
Damaged textiles are processed into industrial wiping cloths, insulation, carpet padding and similar products. The material does not need to be pretty. It does need to be dry and free of mildew, because wet or moldy textiles contaminate the batch and get landfilled anyway.
Your options, roughly in order of convenience:
What not to do: put textiles in your curbside recycling bin. They tangle in sorting machinery at the materials recovery facility, and they will be pulled out and landfilled.
Worth knowing before you sort. One hundred percent cotton and linen sheets are the easiest to recycle, compost in small quantities and reuse as rags. Polyester blends and microfiber do not break down, shed microplastics when washed and are less useful as cleaning cloths because they smear rather than absorb. If you are replacing sheets anyway, buying natural fibers makes the end of their life easier. Our comparisons of percale and sateen and linen and cotton cover how each one wears over time.
Sort them by condition. Clean, undamaged sets go to a thrift store, homeless shelter or neighborhood giveaway group. Worn but intact sheets become drop cloths, rags, garden covers or craft fabric. Anything torn or mildewed goes to textile recycling rather than the donation bin or the trash.
Most Goodwill locations accept clean, usable bed linens, but each region and sometimes each store sets its own policy, and some decline bedding altogether. Call the location you plan to visit and ask specifically about sheets. If your sheets are damaged, ask whether that store has a textile recycling stream, since many do.
Homeless and transitional housing shelters, domestic violence shelters, refugee resettlement programs, furniture banks, thrift stores and local Buy Nothing groups all take linens in good condition. Shelters usually have size preferences, so ask before you drop off a king set.
Take them to a textile recycling drop-off: a thrift store that handles unsellable textiles, a retail take-back bin, a municipal collection event, or a mail-in recycling service. Make sure the sheets are dry and not mildewed. Never put textiles in a curbside recycling cart.
A fitted sheet with failed elastic is still a large piece of usable fabric. Cut out the elastic hem and the remainder works as a drop cloth, a dust cover for stored furniture, or rag material. The curved corners make it less useful for sewing projects than a flat sheet, so it is usually better repurposed than donated to a craft program.
Treat the trash as the last resort, not the default. Donation handles the good ones, repurposing handles the middling ones, and textile recycling handles the rest. Realistically, only sheets that are soiled beyond cleaning or contaminated by pests belong in the bin, and those should be bagged before they go out.
If your sheets have reached the end of their life, there is a decent chance the mattress under them is on a similar timeline. Sheets wear out in a few years. Mattresses give you a longer run, but sagging and permanent body impressions arrive quietly, and most people adapt to a worn bed rather than noticing it. Our guides on how long mattresses last and how often to wash your sheets cover both ends of the bedding lifecycle.
When the mattress itself is the thing that needs to go, it has its own rules in California. Our guide to donating a mattress in Los Angeles and our page on the state mattress recycling fee explain the options. If you are ready to replace the bed, take our sleep quiz or visit any of our five LA showrooms, and we will haul the old one away on delivery.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
