A guide to choosing the right firmness and mattress type for back sleepers, including signs your current mattress isn't supporting your spine.

Back sleeping is often called the healthiest sleep position because it naturally keeps the spine in a neutral line — but only if the mattress underneath is doing its job. Too soft, and your hips sink lower than your shoulders, curving the lower back out of alignment. Too firm, and your lower back loses contact with the surface, leaving it unsupported all night. Getting the firmness and support layer right matters more for back sleepers than almost any other sleep position.
When you sleep on your back, your body has three natural pressure points to manage: the shoulders, the lower back, and the heels. A mattress built for back sleepers needs to cradle the curve of the lumbar spine while keeping the hips and shoulders level with each other. That's a narrower window than side sleeping (which wants more cushioning at the shoulder and hip) or stomach sleeping (which wants a flatter, firmer surface to prevent the belly from sinking).
If your lower back aches when you wake up, or you find yourself tossing to your side within the first hour, that's usually a sign the mattress isn't holding your spine in line. If you regularly shift between your back and your side, it's worth comparing notes with our guide to the best mattress for side sleepers, since combination sleepers need a bit of both worlds.
Most back sleepers do best on a medium-firm mattress, generally in the 6 to 7 out of 10 range on a standard firmness scale. That firmness level offers enough give to let the shoulders settle slightly while still supporting the lumbar curve so the spine doesn't sag. Lighter sleepers (under about 130 lbs) can often go a notch softer since they compress the surface less; heavier sleepers (over about 230 lbs) usually need a firmer base or a thicker support core so the hips don't sink too deep. For a deeper breakdown of the whole 1-10 scale, see our mattress firmness guide.
Hybrids pair a coil support core with a foam or latex comfort layer, which gives back sleepers the best of both: contouring at the lumbar spine plus a responsive base that keeps the hips from sinking too far. This is usually our top recommendation for back sleepers who share a bed, since coils also sleep cooler than all-foam builds.
A medium-firm memory foam mattress can work very well for back sleepers, especially those with lower back sensitivity, since it fills in the gap under the lumbar curve rather than leaving it unsupported. Look for a denser, higher-quality foam so it doesn't sleep too soft over time.
Back sleepers who run warm, sleep with a partner, or carry more body weight often do better on a firmer innerspring or hybrid build. The added push-back keeps the spine level even under more pressure.
A few reliable signs it's time to shop: you wake up with lower back stiffness that eases once you're up and moving, you can see or feel a visible dip where your hips or shoulders rest, or you find yourself rolling onto your side to relieve pressure. Any of these usually point to a mattress that's too soft, too worn out, or simply the wrong firmness for how you actually sleep.
All five of our Los Angeles showrooms let you lie down on medium-firm and firm options side by side before you buy, which is the easiest way to feel the difference a proper lumbar support layer makes. Every mattress we sell comes with our free 120-night comfort guarantee, and same-day delivery ($100 upgrade, order by 4pm) is available on most in-stock orders across the LA area, so you're not sleeping on cardboard while you wait on a new bed.
Most back sleepers sleep best on a medium-firm mattress, roughly a 6-7 out of 10 on the standard firmness scale. That range supports the lumbar curve without letting the hips or shoulders sink out of line.
A firm mattress can work well for back sleepers, particularly those with more body weight or a warmer sleep style, but a mattress that's too firm can leave a gap under the lower back. Medium-firm is the safer starting point for most people.
Generally, no. A plush or soft mattress tends to let the hips sink deeper than the shoulders, curving the lower back out of neutral alignment and leading to morning stiffness for most back sleepers.
Medium-firm hybrid and memory foam mattresses tend to work best, since both provide lumbar contouring along with enough support to keep the spine level throughout the night.
