It is one of the most common assumptions in bedroom planning, and it is half right. Push two twin mattresses together and you get something king-width, but you do not get a king bed. The five inches you are missing are the whole story, and they are the reason split king setups use a different mattress than the one most people have in a spare room.
The short answer
Two standard twin mattresses side by side measure 76 inches wide by 75 inches long. A standard king measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. So the width matches exactly, and you are five inches short on length.

Two things fall out of that table. First, two twins are 16 inches wider than a queen, so they will not stand in for one. Second, no combination of twins produces a California king, which is narrower and four inches longer than a standard king. A split California king uses two 36 by 84 inch halves, a size made specifically for that purpose.
So why does anyone do this on purpose?
Because a bed made of two independent mattresses can do things a single slab cannot.
Adjustable bases
This is the main reason split kings exist. On a king-size adjustable base, each half raises the head and foot independently. One person can sit up to read or sleep at an incline for reflux or snoring while the other stays flat. A single king mattress physically cannot do that, because a mattress that wide will not bend in two directions at once. If you are shopping adjustable beds, this is the configuration you will be quoted.
Different firmness on each side
A 130-pound side sleeper and a 220-pound back sleeper do not want the same mattress, and no single bed resolves that argument perfectly. Two twin XLs let each person pick a firmness and live with it. This is a real and underused option for couples who have returned two or three mattresses trying to find a compromise.
Getting a bed up a staircase
A king mattress is an awkward, heavy, non-bending object. Two twin XLs go around a tight landing without drama. In older Los Angeles buildings with narrow stairwells and tight door swings, this occasionally decides the question for people.
Guest rooms that change jobs
Two twins in a guest room can be two separate beds for two guests, or one large bed for a couple, depending on the weekend. That flexibility is genuinely useful, and it is the one case where standard twins rather than twin XLs make sense, since guests rarely notice the missing five inches.
The gap, and what to do about it
Push two mattresses together and there is a seam. How much it bothers you depends on how you sleep, but there are three standard fixes.
- A bed bridge or mattress connector. A foam wedge that sits in the trough with a strap that runs underneath both mattresses and cinches them together. This is the cheapest fix and the one that works best, because it addresses both the gap and the drift.
- A king mattress pad or topper laid over both. Smooths the transition and makes the surface read as continuous. The drawback is that on an adjustable base a single topper spanning both halves partly defeats the point, so use split toppers there instead.

Sheets are the part people forget
A split king does not take king fitted sheets, because a king fitted sheet would bind the two halves together and eliminate independent movement. What you need is:
- Two twin XL fitted sheets, one per half
- One king flat sheet, duvet and comforter over the top
Split king sheet sets package exactly that. If you are using two standard twins rather than twin XLs, you will need twin fitted sheets, and a king top sheet will hang five inches long at the foot. Not a real problem, but worth knowing before you buy bedding.
When you should just buy a king
If you are not using an adjustable base and you do not need different firmness on each side, a single king mattress is the better bed. There is no seam, no drift, no split bedding to source, and no center ridge. Two twin XLs are a solution to specific problems, not a cheaper way to get a king, and they usually are not cheaper anyway.
The other case for a single king: light sleepers who are sensitive to movement. A good king with pocketed coils or memory foam already isolates motion well, and the seam in a split setup can transmit a little more than people expect if the mattresses are not properly strapped.
