How to make your bed more comfortable: 12 upgrades that actually work

Identify one discomfort in the current setup before buying several accessories.

Neatly layered bed with crisp white sheets, a folded duvet, a knit throw and four plump pillows against a linen headboard

Most uncomfortable beds are not one big problem. They are four or five small ones stacked on top of each other: a pillow that is the wrong height, sheets that trap heat, a mattress that has gone soft in one spot, a duvet that is too heavy for a warm Los Angeles bedroom. Fix them one at a time and the bed changes noticeably, usually for a lot less than the price of a new mattress.

Here are twelve changes worth making, ordered roughly from cheapest to most expensive. Start at the top.

Free changes worth trying first

1. Fix your pillow height before anything else

The wrong pillow loft creates neck strain that you feel as general discomfort. The rule is simple: your head should rest so your neck stays in line with your spine. Side sleepers need a thicker pillow to fill the gap between the shoulder and the head. Back sleepers need something medium. Stomach sleepers need almost nothing, sometimes no pillow at all. If you wake with a stiff neck, this is where to look first. Our guide to choosing a pillow goes deeper.

2. Rotate the mattress

Almost every modern mattress is one sided, so it cannot be flipped, but nearly all of them should be rotated 180 degrees a few times a year. This spreads the wear instead of concentrating it under your hips. If you have never done it, you may find the mattress feels noticeably more supportive within a week.

3. Check what is under the mattress

A sagging box spring, slats that have drifted apart, or a bent centre support will make a perfectly good mattress feel terrible. Pull the mattress off, look at the foundation, and measure the gaps between slats. If they are more than about three inches apart, foam will bulge between them and the surface will feel uneven. A proper foundation is not optional.

4. Lower the bedroom temperature

Sleep quality drops sharply when the room is warm, and in LA the bedroom holds heat well into the night. Somewhere in the mid to high 60s Fahrenheit suits most people. If cooling the whole room is impractical, cool the bed instead with breathable bedding and a fan aimed across the bed rather than at it.

Low-cost upgrades

5. Switch to breathable sheets

Microfibre and low-quality polyester blends hold heat and moisture. Percale cotton, linen and bamboo all breathe better, and each has a different feel. Percale is crisp and cool. Sateen is smooth and slightly warmer. Linen is textured and gets softer with every wash. Read our comparisons of percale versus sateen and bamboo versus cotton before you buy.

6. Stop chasing thread count

Thread count above roughly 400 tells you very little, and inflated numbers are often achieved with multi-ply yarns that sleep hotter, not better. Fibre quality and weave matter far more. Our thread count guide explains what the number actually measures.

7. Add a mattress protector, but choose carefully

A protector extends the life of your mattress and keeps the warranty valid. The catch is that cheap vinyl-backed protectors are effectively a plastic sheet: they trap heat and crinkle. Look for a breathable membrane laminated to a cotton or bamboo top. You will barely notice it is there.

8. Wash your bedding more often than you think

Sheets pick up sweat, skin oils and dust every night, and the buildup makes fabric feel stiff and warm. Weekly is the sensible interval for sheets. Pillows themselves need washing a couple of times a year and replacing every year or two once they stop springing back. See how often to wash your sheets and when to replace a pillow.

Mid-cost changes with real impact

9. Layer the bed properly

Hotels feel comfortable partly because of layering. The structure is: fitted sheet, flat sheet, a light blanket or quilt, then a duvet or coverlet folded across the lower third. Layers let you regulate temperature through the night by adding or removing one, instead of being stuck with a single heavy comforter. Our guide to making a bed like a hotel covers the technique in detail.

10. Get the pillow count and arrangement right

Two sleeping pillows per person is plenty. Everything beyond that is decoration, and decorative pillows on the bed at night just get in the way. What genuinely helps is a supplementary pillow used positionally: between the knees for side sleepers, under the knees for back sleepers, under the belly for stomach sleepers. Those relieve more strain than any number of shams.

11. Add a topper, but pick the right type

A topper is the highest-impact upgrade short of a new mattress, and the type matters more than the price. Memory foam adds contouring and softness. Latex adds softness with more bounce and better airflow. A dense wool or fibre topper adds a plush surface without much change to support. What a topper cannot do is fix a sagging mattress, because it will sag into the dip with you. Our topper guide matches types to problems, and you can browse our toppers here.

12. Consider an adjustable base

If you read in bed, snore, have reflux, or get relief from elevating your legs, an adjustable base changes the bed more than any bedding upgrade will. It also works with most modern mattresses, including foam, latex and many hybrids. See our adjustable bases.

When the mattress is the actual problem

All of the above helps a fundamentally sound mattress. None of it rescues a worn-out one. The signs that you have crossed that line are specific: a visible dip of more than an inch or so where you sleep, waking with pain that fades within an hour of getting up, sleeping better in hotels than at home, or a mattress past roughly eight years of nightly use. If two or more apply, spending on bedding is throwing good money after bad.

One useful test: sleep in the guest room or on the other side of the bed for a few nights. If you wake up feeling better, the mattress is the problem, not your pillow.

Frequently asked questions

Why are hotel beds so comfortable?

Three reasons, and none of them are secret. Hotels use a plush pillow-top or a mattress plus a substantial topper, so the surface is soft while the support underneath stays firm. They layer bedding rather than using one thick comforter. And the bedding is laundered constantly, so it is always crisp. You can reproduce all three at home.

How do you make a bed more comfortable without buying a new mattress?

In order of impact: fix your pillow height, check and repair the foundation, rotate the mattress, switch to breathable sheets, then add a topper matched to what is missing. That sequence solves most complaints without replacing the mattress.

How do you layer a bed with a quilt and a comforter?

Fitted sheet first, then a flat sheet, then the quilt pulled up to the pillows, then the comforter folded in half or thirds across the bottom of the bed. That way the comforter is available if you get cold but is not on you all night. Keep the quilt lighter than the comforter so the layers are genuinely different weights.

What are the most comfortable bed sheets?

For most people in a warm climate, long-staple cotton in a percale weave. It breathes well, feels crisp, and lasts. If you want something softer and warmer, sateen. If you run very hot or want a relaxed look, linen. Comfort here is about fibre and weave, not thread count.

How can you make a sofa bed more comfortable?

Sofa beds are thin and have a metal bar running under the sleeping surface. A two to three inch topper is the single fix that works, because it lifts you off the bar. Add a proper fitted sheet sized for the thin mattress so the bedding does not slide.

Does a mattress topper make a firm mattress feel soft?

Yes, within limits. A topper changes the top few inches, so it can soften a firm surface convincingly. It cannot make a mattress more supportive, and it cannot compensate for a mattress that has lost its structure.

Start with the surface, not the wallet

Work down this list in order and you will know within a couple of weeks whether the bed can be saved. If it cannot, come lie on a few options in one of our five Los Angeles showrooms. Take the sleep quiz first and we will have a short list ready, every mattress is covered by our 120-night comfort guarantee, and same-day delivery ($100 upgrade, order by 4pm) is available across most of LA.
