Here is the thing almost every bed frame guide gets wrong: a bed frame is not the same size as the mattress it holds. Frames add width, length, or both — sometimes a couple of inches, sometimes eight or more with a headboard and footboard. If you measure your room against mattress dimensions and buy accordingly, there is a real chance the bed doesn't fit where you planned to put it.

Standard mattress dimensions
US mattress sizes are standardized, so these numbers are reliable across brands. Frames are built to fit them.

How much bigger is the frame?
This is the number people actually need and rarely find. It depends entirely on frame style.

Upholstered frames are the biggest offenders — the padding and fabric wrap sits outside the structural rails, so a queen upholstered bed can easily measure 68" wide rather than 60". Storage beds add a separate problem: the drawers need 20–24" of clear floor beside the bed to open, which is often the real constraint in a small LA bedroom, not the frame footprint itself.

Treat these as planning ranges. Always confirm the actual product dimensions before you buy — they vary by manufacturer and style.
- Twin frame: roughly 40–44" wide × 77–85" long
- Twin XL frame: roughly 40–44" wide × 82–90" long
- Full frame: roughly 56–62" wide × 77–85" long
- Queen frame: roughly 62–68" wide × 82–90" long
- King frame: roughly 78–84" wide × 82–90" long
- California king frame: roughly 74–80" wide × 86–94" long
Height matters more than people think
Frame sizing isn't only about floor footprint. Total bed height — frame plus foundation plus mattress — determines whether getting in and out of bed is comfortable. A good target for most adults is a mattress top surface around 24–25" from the floor: sit on the edge, and your feet should rest flat with your knees at roughly a right angle.
Run the math before you buy. A 14" platform frame plus a 12" mattress lands at 26" — fine for most people, high for shorter sleepers. A 6" low-profile frame plus the same mattress gives you 18", which is low enough to be a nuisance for anyone with hip or knee issues. Room size: what actually fits
The working rule is at least 24" of clear walking space on every side you need to access, and about 36" if you want to open a closet or dresser drawer in that path. Applied to real rooms:
- 10' × 10' bedroom: a full comfortably; a queen if you accept access from only three sides and skip a large dresser.
- 10' × 12' bedroom: a queen fits well. A king is technically possible but leaves little room for other furniture.
- 12' × 12' and up: a king or California king works with room to spare.
- Studio or under 10' × 10': a full or twin XL, and a storage frame earns its keep.
One extra step people skip in LA's older buildings and converted units: measure the doorway, the hallway turn, and the stairwell, not just the bedroom. King vs California king: the mix-up worth avoiding
These are not interchangeable, and frames are not either. A standard king is wider (76" × 80"); a California king is narrower but longer (72" × 84"). A Cal king mattress will not sit correctly in a king frame — you'll have four inches of overhang at the foot and a four-inch gap at the sides.
Choose by what you need: width for couples who want space between them, length for anyone over roughly 6'2". Cal kings also suit long, narrow rooms better, which describes plenty of LA bedrooms.
Buying the frame and the mattress together
A few compatibility rules that save returns:
- Slat spacing: foam and hybrid mattresses need slats no more than about 3" apart. Wider gaps let the mattress sag between slats and can void the warranty.
- Center support: any frame queen size or larger needs a center rail with legs to the floor. This is the single most common cause of premature mattress sagging.
- Adjustable bases: if you want an adjustable base, check whether your frame accommodates one or whether you need a base-compatible frame. Not all do.
- Box spring or not: platform beds don't need one. Traditional frames usually do. Adding a box spring to a platform bed just makes the bed too tall.
