A captain's bed is a bed frame with built-in storage underneath, usually a bank of deep drawers set into a solid base. Instead of an open gap between the frame and the floor, the whole under-bed area is enclosed and put to work. It is one of the most practical bed frames you can buy, and in a city where closet space is scarce and apartments are small, it solves a real problem.
The design copies the bunks built into ships, where every cubic inch had to earn its keep and nothing could be left loose to slide around. Ship's officers slept in a raised berth with drawers and lockers built into the platform beneath it. Furniture makers borrowed the idea, kept the name, and captain's bed stuck.

Variations you will see: a mate's bed is essentially the same idea in a smaller, simpler form, usually twin size with three drawers, and often aimed at kids. A storage bed or platform storage bed may have drawers too, but they are frequently shallower or limited to the footboard end. A captain's bed means the whole base is storage.
Captain's beds are most common in twin, twin XL and full, because those are the sizes that go into kids' rooms, teen rooms, guest rooms and studios. Queen and king versions exist but are less common and much heavier.
The mattress footprint is the standard size, so a twin captain's bed takes a standard twin mattress. What changes is the space around the bed. Side drawers need clearance to open, which means you cannot push a side-drawer captain's bed flush against a wall on the drawer side. Plan for roughly two feet of pull-out room on any side with drawers, or choose a model with footboard drawers if the bed has to live in a corner. They are one of the best frames for a child's room, with two caveats. The storage is genuinely useful for toys, clothes and bedding, and the enclosed base means no lost socks and nothing to crawl under. But check the finished height against your child's size, since a tall deck plus a thick mattress can be a long way down for a small child, and make sure drawers have stops so they cannot be pulled all the way out. The mattress area matches the standard size it is built for, so a full captain's bed fits a standard full mattress. The frame itself is wider and longer than the mattress, typically by a few inches on each side for the rails and headboard, and side drawers add another two feet of required clearance when open. Measure the room, not just the bed.
Deck heights commonly run somewhere in the region of 15 to 22 inches, noticeably higher than a standard platform bed. Add your mattress thickness to get the real number. Manufacturers vary a lot here, so treat the spec sheet as the source of truth rather than a general range.
