Headboards do not use the same measurements as mattresses, which is why so many of them arrive looking slightly wrong. A queen mattress is exactly 60 inches wide everywhere in the country. A queen headboard is usually somewhere between 62 and 65 inches, and occasionally further outside that range, because the manufacturer has decided how much it should overhang the bed.
So headboard sizing is not a lookup table you can trust blindly. It is three measurements you check on the specific product. Here is what the standards actually are, and what to verify before you order.
Typical headboard widths by bed size
Headboards are made a little wider than the mattress they sit behind, generally by two to five inches per side, so the mattress does not look like it is spilling past the edges. These are the ranges you will see most often.

Two things worth noting. Twin and twin XL headboards are interchangeable, because the two mattresses differ in length, not width. And king and California king are not interchangeable: a California king is four inches narrower, so a king headboard will overhang it noticeably and a California king headboard will look pinched behind a standard king. Many manufacturers sell one board labelled for both, which is fine visually but is worth a second look if the bed sits in an alcove.

Headboard height: the number people forget
Width is the easy measurement. Height is where headboards actually go wrong, and it comes in two forms that get confused with each other.
Overall height is measured from the floor to the top of the board. Common ranges:
- Low profile: roughly 34 to 44 inches. Suits low platform beds, rooms with a window behind the bed, and anyone who wants the bed to stay visually quiet.
- Standard: roughly 44 to 54 inches. The default for most bedrooms and the safest choice if you are unsure.
- Tall or statement: 55 inches and up, sometimes well past 70. Dramatic in a room with high ceilings, overwhelming in a small one.
Height above the mattress is the number that determines whether you can comfortably sit up and read. This is overall height minus the height of your mattress plus foundation, and it is the calculation nearly everyone skips. A 48 inch headboard behind a 14 inch mattress on a 9 inch foundation leaves you 25 inches of board. Put that same headboard behind a 15 inch pillow top on a tall adjustable base and you may have 15 inches, which looks stubby and gives your shoulders nothing to rest against.
The practical rule: aim for at least 20 inches of headboard visible above the top of the mattress if you sit up in bed. Measure your current mattress-plus-base stack before you order, not after.
The three measurements to check
- The headboard's actual listed width, not the bed size on the label. Compare it to the width of your frame, not your mattress.
- Your mattress and foundation height combined, measured from the floor to the top of the mattress. Subtract this from the headboard's overall height to see how much board will actually show.
- Your frame's bracket spacing and hole pattern. Most metal bed frames use a standard hole pattern, but standard is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Mounting: frame, wall or freestanding
Frame mounted headboards bolt to the head end of a metal bed frame or platform bed. This is the most common approach and the sizing is the most predictable, since the manufacturer designed the pair to go together. The catch is that not every frame has mounting holes, and not every headboard leg lines up with them.
Wall mounted headboards hang on a French cleat or a pair of brackets and never touch the bed at all. This is the flexible option: you can hang it at whatever height suits you, it works with beds that have no mounting holes, and it does not shift when the bed does. Freestanding headboards simply lean against the wall behind the bed, held in place by the bed's weight. Easy, rental friendly, and prone to creeping forward over time.
Headboards and adjustable bases
This one catches a lot of people out. When an adjustable base raises the head of the bed, the mattress moves forward slightly as it pivots. A headboard bolted rigidly to the frame will rub against the mattress and, over time, wear the fabric.
Two solutions. Some adjustable bases accept headboard brackets that move with the base, which keeps everything aligned. Otherwise, mount the headboard to the wall with an inch or two of clearance behind the mattress. Wall mounting is generally the cleaner answer with an adjustable base, and it also lets you set the height correctly for a base that sits taller than a conventional foundation. Frequently asked questions
How wide is a queen headboard?
Most queen headboards measure between 62 and 65 inches wide, sitting a couple of inches proud of the 60 inch queen mattress on each side. Some upholstered designs run wider still. Always check the listed width rather than assuming, particularly if the bed goes into an alcove or between two built-in nightstands.
How wide is a king size headboard?
Standard king headboards typically run 78 to 82 inches wide against a 76 inch mattress. California king headboards are narrower, usually 74 to 78 inches, because the California king mattress is 72 inches wide. The two are not reliably interchangeable, so confirm which size a board is built for.
Can you attach a headboard to any bed frame?
No. The frame needs mounting holes or brackets at the head end, and the spacing has to line up with the headboard's legs. Many basic metal frames and most platform beds without a built-in headboard do not accommodate one at all. If your frame will not take a headboard, wall mounting sidesteps the problem entirely and gives you more control over the height.
What is a headboard for?
Originally it insulated sleepers from a cold exterior wall. Now it does three things: it stops pillows sliding off the back of the bed, it gives you something to lean against when you sit up, and it protects the wall from headboard-height scuffs and hair oil. It is also the single largest visual anchor in most bedrooms, which is why so much of the decision is aesthetic.
Do you need a headboard?
Not structurally. A bed works fine without one, and plenty of low platform designs are made to go headboard free. It becomes worth having if you read or work in bed, if your pillows regularly end up on the floor behind the mattress, or if the room feels unfinished with a bare wall above the bed.
Should the headboard be wider than the bed?
Yes, slightly. A headboard flush with the mattress edges looks accidental, and any mattress shift leaves the corners exposed. Two to four inches of overhang per side is the range that reads as intentional without dominating the room.
