What a sofa bed is, how pull-out sleepers differ from futons and click-clacks, the mattress sizes they take, and how to judge whether one will actually be comfortable to sleep on.

A sofa bed is a piece of seating that converts into a sleeping surface. That sounds obvious until you start shopping and discover the term covers at least four mechanisms that work nothing alike, sleep nothing alike, and take completely different mattresses. "Sleeper sofa", "pull-out couch", "convertible" and "sofa bed" get used interchangeably in listings, which does not help.
Here is how the categories actually divide, what each one is good at, and what to check before you buy.
The classic. A hinged metal frame folds up inside the sofa body, under the seat cushions. You lift the front edge and unfold it forward in two or three sections, and a thin mattress travels with the frame. This is the type most people mean by "sleeper sofa".
Its advantage is that the sleeping surface is separate from the seating surface, so the sofa can have proper deep cushions and still open into something bed-shaped. Its drawback is the mechanism itself: the folding bars sit directly under the mattress, and on cheaper frames you can feel them.
A single mattress on a hinged frame that lays flat. There is no separate mechanism and no hidden mattress, because the thing you sit on is the thing you sleep on. That makes futons cheap, light and simple, and it means the same surface has to do two jobs it is not equally good at. Our futon mattress guide covers the fill types in detail.
The back folds down flat to the level of the seat, usually with an audible click, turning the sofa into a low platform. No pull-out frame, no separate mattress. These are the most compact option and the least comfortable for a full night, because the seam between back and seat runs across the middle of the sleeping surface.
Not technically convertibles at all, but they solve the same problem. A daybed is a twin mattress in a frame with three sides, used as seating by day. A trundle adds a second mattress that rolls out from underneath. Because both use real mattresses rather than fold-up ones, they sleep considerably better than anything on this list. If the room can take the footprint, they are usually the better answer. See what a daybed is and what a trundle bed is for the sizing.
Sleeper sofa mattresses are named after standard mattress sizes but are not the same dimensions. They are shorter, and much thinner, because they have to fold into the sofa body.
Thickness is typically 4 to 6 inches, since anything thicker will not fold into the cavity. That 72-inch length catches people out: a six-foot adult will have their feet at the very edge. Measure before you buy, and measure your actual frame rather than trusting the size label, because sleeper frames are not standardised the way bed frames are.
Standard bed sheets will be loose on a sleeper mattress because of the shorter length and shallow depth. Sheets sold specifically for sleeper sofas fit better. Our guide to measuring a mattress covers how to take the dimensions properly.
Honestly: as occasional guest beds, a good one is fine. As someone's every-night bed, no, and no accessory fully fixes that.
Three things separate a tolerable sleeper from a bad one.
The bar. On a pull-out, the horizontal support bar sits a few inches below the mattress at roughly hip height. With a 4-inch mattress over a widely spaced frame, you feel it. Better frames use closely spaced slats or a flexible deck that distributes load instead of a few bars.
The mattress fill. Innerspring sleeper mattresses are the old default and the worst of the options, because thin coils under thin padding is a hard combination to make comfortable. Memory foam and gel foam sleeper mattresses are a clear upgrade and are now widely available as replacements, which is often the cheapest way to transform a sofa bed you already own. Air-over-coil models, where an inflatable chamber sits above the folding mattress, sleep better again but add a pump and a failure point.
What you add on top. A 2 to 3 inch mattress topper is the single most effective fix. It bridges the frame bars, adds the pressure relief the thin mattress cannot provide, and stores in a closet between visits. Our piece on making a sofa bed more comfortable goes through the full list.
A sofa bed earns its place when floor space is the constraint and overnight guests are occasional. In a studio in Koreatown or a one-bedroom in Silver Lake, a room that has to be a living room six days a week and a guest room on the seventh is exactly the problem a convertible solves.
It is the wrong call in three situations. If someone will sleep on it most nights, buy a real bed; even a twin mattress on a daybed frame will sleep better in a similar footprint. If your guests have back, hip or shoulder problems, a thin folding mattress over a metal frame will not treat them kindly. And if the room can accommodate a full size mattress on a low platform, that is almost always more comfortable per square foot than a convertible.
A sofa with a folding metal frame and a thin mattress stored under the seat cushions, which pulls out forward to make a bed. It is the same thing as a pull-out couch, and it is one specific type of sofa bed rather than a synonym for the whole category. Futons and click-clack convertibles are sofa beds too, but they work differently.
A sofa bed hides a separate mattress and frame inside the sofa, so the seating cushions and the sleeping surface are different things. A futon has one mattress that serves as both, laid on a hinged frame that folds flat. Futons are cheaper and lighter; sleeper sofas usually look and sit more like ordinary furniture.
Most commonly a queen sleeper at roughly 60 by 72 inches, or a full sleeper at roughly 54 by 72 inches, both around 4 to 6 inches thick. These are shorter and thinner than the standard mattress sizes they are named after, so measure the frame deck before ordering a replacement.
Comfort comes down to the deck and the mattress rather than the brand. Look for a frame with closely spaced slats or a flexible deck rather than widely spaced bars, a memory foam or gel foam sleeper mattress rather than a thin innerspring, and at least 5 inches of mattress thickness. Adding a topper raises almost any sleeper a full grade.
Usually yes. Replacement sleeper mattresses are sold in the standard sleeper dimensions, and swapping a worn innerspring for a foam one is the most cost-effective improvement you can make to an older sofa bed. Measure the existing mattress, and check the maximum thickness the mechanism will fold around before buying.
The honest test is how many nights a month someone will sleep on it. Two or three, a decent sofa bed plus a topper is fine. Several nights a week, you will feel the difference within a year.
