Bed slats should sit no more than 3 inches apart, and a queen or larger needs a center support leg. Here is the spacing, the slat count by size, and how to spot a base that is quietly wrecking your mattress.

Slats are the least glamorous part of a bed and the part most likely to quietly ruin a good mattress. A new mattress sitting on slats that are too far apart will sag between them within a year, and when you file the warranty claim, the manufacturer will ask what the mattress was resting on. Getting this right costs almost nothing. Getting it wrong costs a mattress.
Here is what slats actually do, the spacing that works, how many you need by size, and how to tell when yours have failed.
Bed slats are the horizontal boards that run across a bed frame from side rail to side rail, forming the deck your mattress sits on. A frame with slats is called a slatted bed base, and it replaces the job a box spring used to do: spread your weight evenly across the frame so the mattress is supported at every point rather than bridging open space.
Slats come in two broad styles. Solid slats are flat boards, usually hardwood or plywood, and they give firm, even, unchanging support. Sprung slats are thin strips of laminated wood with a slight upward curve, set into rubber holders so they flex under load. Sprung slats add a little give and a little airflow, and they are common on European-style frames. They also have a shorter useful life, because the flex that makes them comfortable is the same flex that eventually cracks them.
No more than 3 inches of open gap between slats. That is the number to remember, and it is not a rough guideline. It is the figure written into most modern mattress warranties.
The reason is simple. Memory foam, latex and the foam comfort layers in a hybrid are flexible by design. Suspend them over a 5-inch gap with a body pressing down and the foam dips into the void. Do that nightly for a year and the dip stops springing back. You end up with a washboard of soft spots that reads as a defective mattress but is actually a foundation problem.
A few specifics worth knowing:
The count follows from the spacing rather than the other way around. Measure the length of your frame, then divide by the width of one slat plus a 3-inch gap. In practice that works out to:
The ranges are wide because slat width varies. A frame shipped with fourteen 3-inch slats and one shipped with eleven 4-inch slats can both land inside the 3-inch gap rule. Count the gaps, not the boards.
This is the detail people skip. Any bed a queen or wider needs a center support rail running head to foot underneath the slats, with at least one leg carrying the load down to the floor. Kings and California kings usually need two or three legs. Without it, the slats are only anchored at the two side rails, and a span that wide will bow in the middle no matter how thick the boards are. Most warranty denials on large mattresses trace back to a missing or unsupported center rail.
For almost every mattress sold today, slats are the better answer. A true box spring has actual springs inside and is built to flex alongside an old-fashioned innerspring. Put a modern foam or hybrid mattress on one and that flex works against you, and most manufacturers exclude the resulting damage from coverage. What gets sold as a box spring now is usually a rigid foundation, which is fine, it just is not a box spring. We cover the difference in what is a box spring and what is a mattress foundation.
Slats rarely snap dramatically. They degrade, and the mattress takes the blame. Watch for:
Strip the bed once a year and look. It takes five minutes and it is the single best thing you can do to protect a mattress you paid real money for.
If the gaps are too wide, you have three options. Buy matching extra slats and redistribute everything to a 3-inch gap. Lay a bunkie board across the existing slats, a thin rigid panel that turns a slatted base into a flat deck, which is the fastest fix. Or cut three-quarter-inch plywood to the inside dimensions of the frame, which works but blocks airflow and can trap moisture under foam.
For a cracked slat, replace it rather than patch it. A board that has failed once will fail again, and a weak slat loads the two beside it.
They are the horizontal boards spanning a bed frame that hold up the mattress, either solid flat boards or slightly curved sprung slats set in flexible holders. Together they form a slatted bed base, which does the job a box spring or foundation would otherwise do.
No more than 3 inches of open gap, and ideally around 2 inches for foam, latex or hybrid mattresses. Traditional innersprings tolerate a little more, but 3 inches is the spacing most mattress warranties require.
Usually 13 to 15, depending on how wide each slat is. The right way to check is to measure the gaps rather than count the boards: if no gap exceeds 3 inches and the frame has a center support rail with a leg to the floor, you have enough.
A bed frame whose mattress support comes from a series of slats rather than a solid platform or a box spring. Most modern platform beds use one. It allows airflow under the mattress, which helps with heat and moisture, and it costs and weighs less than a foundation.
Replace the broken board with one of the same thickness and width, and check whether the failure points to a bigger problem such as gaps that are too wide or a missing center support. If several have gone at once, a bunkie board over the whole base is cheaper and more reliable than replacing them one by one.
Yes, as long as the gaps are 3 inches or less and the slats are rigid enough not to bow. Foam needs continuous support more than any other construction, so this is the mattress type where spacing matters most.
If your bed has started sagging, check the slats before you shop. A 3-inch gap rule and a center leg fix more mattresses than people expect, and it is worth confirming what your coverage actually requires. Our guide to mattress warranties spells out the foundation clauses that catch people out.
If the mattress really is done, we stock foundations and platform bases built to the right spacing, along with memory foam and hybrid mattresses to sit on them.
