What is a box spring? how it works and when you actually need one

A box spring is a sprung platform that supports your mattress, adds height and absorbs shock. Most modern mattresses need a rigid foundation instead. Here is how to tell which one yours requires.

A box spring is the platform your mattress sits on. In its traditional form it is a wooden or steel frame, roughly the same footprint as your mattress, filled with heavy-gauge steel coils and wrapped in fabric. It sits on a bed frame, or on legs, and its job is to hold the mattress flat, absorb some of the load, and lift the sleeping surface to a comfortable height.

That is the definition. The more useful question is whether you need one, because for a large share of mattresses sold today the answer is no. Here is how to tell which camp you are in.

What a box spring actually does

A real box spring does four things.

It provides even support. Without a flat, rigid base, a mattress sags into whatever gaps sit beneath it. A box spring spreads your weight across the whole surface instead of letting it concentrate in a few spots.

It absorbs shock. This is the original purpose and the reason for the coils. Every time you sit down, roll over or get into bed, the mattress takes an impact. A sprung base takes some of that force so the mattress does not have to, which slows the rate at which the comfort layers break down.

It adds height. A mattress laid on a low platform can sit uncomfortably close to the floor. Around 8 or 9 inches of box spring puts the top of the bed near hip height for most adults, which makes getting in and out easier, especially for older sleepers or anyone with hip or knee problems.

It improves airflow. Raising the mattress off a solid surface lets air move underneath, which helps moisture escape rather than collect against the bottom panel.

Box spring, foundation and platform: not the same thing

These three words get used interchangeably in stores and online, which causes a lot of confusion at delivery time.

A true box spring contains actual springs. It flexes. It is designed to work with an innerspring mattress, where a little give underneath is part of the intended feel.

A foundation, sometimes sold as a low-profile foundation or a semi-flex base, looks almost identical from the outside but contains a rigid grid of wooden or steel slats instead of coils. It does not flex. Most mattresses sold in the last fifteen years are designed for this, not for a sprung base. Browse our mattress foundations to see what a modern one looks like.

A platform bed is a bed frame with a built-in slatted or solid surface, so it replaces the box spring entirely. Nothing goes between the frame and the mattress. Our guide to platform beds covers this in more depth.

The important practical point: if your mattress warranty calls for a rigid base and you put it on a flexing box spring, you can void the warranty and you will almost certainly get premature sagging. Read the tag.

Do you need a box spring?

You probably do if

  • You have a traditional innerspring mattress that specifies a box spring in its care instructions.
  • Your bed frame is a simple metal rail-and-hook frame with no slats or center support. These frames are designed to carry a box spring, not a bare mattress.
  • You want the bed noticeably higher than a platform bed puts it.

You probably do not if

  • You bought a memory foam, latex or hybrid mattress. These need a firm, non-flexing base. A rigid foundation or a slatted platform is correct; a sprung box spring is not.
  • You have a platform bed, a slatted frame with proper center support, or an adjustable base.
  • Your mattress is on an adjustable base, which replaces the box spring completely and cannot work with one.

If you are still unsure, our fuller breakdown of box spring versus platform bed versus bunkie board walks through each combination.

Bed slats and the gap rule

If you are skipping the box spring and going with a slatted frame instead, the spacing matters more than most people realize. Slats set more than about 3 inches apart let foam mattresses bulge down between them, which creates ridges you can feel and eventually permanent damage. Most foam and hybrid manufacturers specify a maximum gap of 3 inches and a center support leg on queen and larger sizes. If your frame has wider gaps, a bunkie board or a sheet of plywood laid over the slats solves it cheaply.

How long a box spring lasts, and how to tell it is done

A box spring outlives most mattresses but not forever. Eight to ten years is a reasonable expectation, less if it has carried a heavy sleeper or been moved between homes repeatedly. Signs it has failed:

  • It creaks, pops or squeaks when you shift weight.
  • You can see or feel a dip in the middle when the mattress is off.
  • Pressing down in different spots gives noticeably different resistance.
  • Your brand new mattress developed a sag in the same place the old one did. That is the base, not the mattress.

Replacing the mattress while keeping a worn-out base is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes in mattress buying, because the new mattress inherits the old sag and the warranty claim gets denied. We cover the failure signs in detail in do box springs wear out.

Buying one in Los Angeles

Two practical notes for LA shoppers. First, measure your stairwell and doorways before ordering. A standard 9 inch box spring is a single rigid unit and will not bend around a tight apartment corner. A split box spring, which comes in two halves, solves this and is worth asking for in older buildings and hillside homes. Second, California charges a mattress recycling fee on foundations as well as mattresses, so factor that in when comparing prices. See our note on the mattress recycling fee.

If you are buying a new mattress anyway, buy the matched base at the same time. Manufacturers design the pair together, the warranty assumes it, and you avoid discovering at delivery that your ten-year-old base has a dip in it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of a box spring?

To give the mattress a flat, supportive surface, absorb some of the shock of nightly use, raise the bed to a comfortable height and allow air to circulate underneath. On an innerspring mattress the coils inside the box spring also contribute a little flex to the overall feel.

Is a box spring necessary?

Not usually, not anymore. It is necessary if your mattress specifies one or if your bed frame provides no other support surface. Memory foam, latex and hybrid mattresses want a rigid foundation or a properly slatted platform instead, and putting them on a sprung box spring tends to cause sagging.

Does a memory foam mattress need a box spring?

No. Memory foam needs firm, even, non-flexing support. A rigid foundation, a platform bed with slats no more than about 3 inches apart, or an adjustable base are all correct. A traditional sprung box spring is the one option to avoid.

Can you put a box spring on a platform bed?

You can, but there is rarely a reason to. The platform already provides the support surface, so adding a box spring on top mostly just raises the bed by another 8 or 9 inches. If the extra height is what you want, a low-profile foundation is the tidier way to get some of it.

How long do box springs last?

Roughly eight to ten years under normal use. Creaking, visible dips, uneven resistance when you press on it, or a new mattress that sags in the old familiar spot all point to a base that needs replacing.

Do you need a box spring with a bed frame?

It depends on the frame. A basic metal rail frame with no slats needs a box spring or foundation, because there is nothing else holding the mattress up. A platform frame with a slatted or solid deck does not.
