Return policies vary enormously between mattress retailers. Here are the seven clauses that decide whether you actually get your money back, and the questions to ask before you pay.

A mattress is one of the few purchases where you cannot really know if it was right until weeks after you paid for it. Retailers know this, which is why almost every one of them advertises a return policy or a sleep trial. What they advertise and what the policy actually says are frequently different documents.
The headline number is rarely the thing that matters. A 365-night trial with a 20 percent restocking fee and a required 30-day break-in period is a worse deal than a 100-night trial with free pickup and a full refund. Here is what to read before you hand over a card.
These terms get blurred in marketing, and the distinction is worth holding onto.
A return policy is the standard retail window, often 30 days, and it usually applies to unopened or unused merchandise. Once a mattress has been slept on, most straightforward return policies no longer apply.
A sleep trial or comfort guarantee is a separate promise specifically covering a mattress you have slept on. It is the one that matters, because nobody returns a mattress they never used. Our guide to mattress trial periods covers how these work in practice.
A warranty is a third thing entirely, covering manufacturing defects such as sagging beyond a specified depth, usually for years. It never covers "I do not like how it feels." Our warranty explainer goes into the detail.
When you ask a salesperson about returns, be specific: ask what happens if you sleep on it for six weeks and want your money back.
The single biggest variable. Fees commonly range from nothing to 20 percent of the purchase price, and on a premium mattress that is real money. Some retailers call it a restocking fee, some call it a processing or handling fee, and some bury it as a deduction from the refund. Ask for the number as a dollar amount, not a percentage.
A bed-in-a-box will not go back in its box. Returning one means either a charity pickup the retailer arranges or a courier collection, and somebody pays for it. Online sellers often cover this; some charge a flat fee of a hundred dollars or more. Local retailers vary, and a local retailer who already delivers to your neighborhood generally has the cheapest answer.
Many "comfort guarantees" are one-time exchanges, not refunds. You can swap the mattress for a different one of equal or greater value, paying the difference, but you cannot get your money back. That is a genuinely useful policy if the problem is firmness, and a frustrating one if you have decided you want to shop elsewhere.
Also check how many exchanges you get. "One-time" means exactly that, and if the replacement is also wrong you are stuck with it.
Most policies require you to sleep on the mattress for 21 to 30 nights before starting a return. This is not purely self-serving: a new mattress genuinely does feel different from the floor model, foam softens, and your body adapts. Plenty of people who want to return in week one are happy by week five.
Do note the date, though. The clock on the trial usually starts at delivery, and the break-in period runs inside it rather than extending it.
A large number of policies are void if the mattress arrives back stained, and many require a protector to have been used from day one. Some retailers include one; some sell you one and then invoke the clause if you declined. This is the most common reason a return gets refused, and it is entirely avoidable. Put a protector on it the day it arrives, whatever the policy says.
Clearance and floor-model mattresses are very often final sale. Adjustable bases, foundations, pillows and bedding are usually excluded even when the mattress is covered. Custom sizes and split configurations frequently are too. If you are buying a mattress and base together, ask about each item separately.
Some policies require the original law tag still attached to the mattress, the receipt, and occasionally the original packaging. The law tag is the white label sewn to the side. Do not cut it off. It is not illegal for you to remove it, despite what the label implies, but removing it can void a return or a warranty claim.
California does not require retailers to accept returns on used merchandise, and there is no legal cooling-off period for an in-store mattress purchase. What state law does require is that a store post its return policy clearly, and if it does not, a buyer generally has 30 days to return unused goods with a receipt. That protection does not extend to a mattress you have slept on.
Separately, California law regulates the resale of used bedding, which is a large part of why returned mattresses are usually donated or recycled rather than resold, and why retailers care so much about stains and law tags. The state recycling fee added to your purchase funds that end of the system, and our page on the mattress recycling fee explains what it covers.
The practical takeaway: the written policy is the protection. Read it, and get it in writing before you pay.
Online retailers generally offer longer trials, because a long trial is what makes people comfortable buying a mattress they have never touched. The trade-off is that executing a return is a logistics problem you manage over email, and it can take weeks between the request and the refund.
Local retailers tend to offer shorter windows but resolve them faster, often with the same truck that delivered the mattress. There is also a difference in how comfort exchanges work: in a showroom you can go lie on the alternative before choosing it, which is considerably better than picking a replacement from a website. Our comparison of buying online versus in store weighs both sides.
Neither model is automatically better. What matters is that you read the specific policy rather than assuming the category behaves a certain way.
A return policy is insurance. Like all insurance, the goal is not to use it.
Only if the retailer offers a sleep trial or comfort guarantee that specifically covers used mattresses. A standard 30-day return policy usually applies to unopened merchandise only. Most sleep trials also require a break-in period of 21 to 30 nights before you can start a return, so check both the window and the minimum.
Contact the retailer within the trial window and in writing, so there is a record of the date. Expect to be asked for the order number, proof the mattress is unstained, and sometimes photographs. The retailer then arranges pickup or a charity collection. Do not dispose of it yourself before the return is approved, since you will usually need it collected to get the refund.
Some do, commonly up to 20 percent of the purchase price, and some charge a separate pickup or transportation fee instead. Others charge nothing. It varies by retailer rather than by brand, so ask for the total dollar cost of a return before you buy, not the percentage.
Compare the whole package rather than the headline trial length: the restocking fee, who pays for pickup, whether you get a refund or only an exchange, the required break-in period, and what is excluded. A shorter trial with no fees and free pickup usually beats a year-long trial with a 20 percent deduction.
It is almost never resold as new. In California, regulations on used bedding mean returned mattresses are typically donated to charity, sold as clearly labeled used merchandise where permitted, or broken down for recycling. This is why retailers insist on a protector and an unstained mattress: a stained one cannot be donated at all.
Usually yes. Almost no policy expects you to refit a compressed mattress into its bag, and pickups are done uncovered or in a supplied bag. The item you do need to keep intact is the law tag sewn to the side of the mattress, along with your receipt or order confirmation.
Every mattress from LA Mattress Store comes with a free 120-night comfort guarantee, and the full terms are on our Love Your Bed Guarantee page rather than buried in a footnote. If you would rather reduce the odds of needing it, take our sleep quiz for a firmness recommendation, or come lie on the options at one of our five Los Angeles showrooms. Same-day delivery is available across most of LA when you order by 4pm.
