Coir is a stiff natural fiber from coconut husks, used in mattresses as a firm, breathable support layer. Here is how it performs, who it suits, and how it compares to latex and coils.

Coir (pronounced KOY-er) is the coarse natural fiber pulled from the husk of a coconut. It is the fibrous, stringy layer between the smooth outer shell and the hard inner nut, and it is a byproduct of an industry that was already harvesting coconuts for food and oil.
You will run into coir in three very different places: doormats and rope, garden growing medium, and mattresses. This guide is about the third one. If you have seen a mattress advertised as a coir bed, or spotted rubberized coconut fiber in a spec sheet, here is what that actually means for how the bed sleeps.
Coconut husks are soaked (a process called retting), then the fibers are separated, cleaned and dried. Two grades come out of this. Brown coir comes from mature coconuts and is stiff, strong and dark. White coir comes from immature coconuts and is finer and more flexible.
Mattresses use brown coir, because stiffness is the point. The fiber is what gives the layer its structure.
Coir almost never appears as loose fiber inside a bed. It is processed into a sheet first, usually one of two ways:
In a finished mattress, a coir layer usually does one of two jobs. It acts as the main support core in an all-natural bed, or it works as a transition or insulator layer between a spring unit and the comfort layers above it, adding firmness and airflow without much bulk.
Firm. Sometimes very firm. Coir has almost no contouring quality of its own: it holds you up rather than letting you settle in. Rubberized coir has a slight bounce from the latex binder, but it is a long way from the give of a memory foam or even a plush latex layer.
If you are used to a pillow top, a coir-heavy mattress will feel like sleeping on a firm, breathable platform. Some people find that supportive and clarifying. Others find it punishing, particularly side sleepers whose shoulder and hip need somewhere to go.
Most beds that use coir well pair it with a comfort layer on top, natural latex or wool, so you get coir's support and airflow underneath and something softer at the surface.
This is coir's strongest suit. The fibers form an open, irregular structure with a lot of empty space in it, so air moves through freely and heat does not build up the way it does in dense foam. In a warm climate like ours, that matters. Los Angeles bedrooms hold heat well into the night for most of the year, and a breathable support core is doing real work.
Coir does not compress and stay compressed the way low-density foam does. Rubberized coir layers hold their shape for a long time, which is part of why the material shows up in mattresses built to last rather than mattresses built to a price.
Coir is a genuine byproduct. The husks would otherwise be waste, and the fiber is biodegradable. It is not a marketing stretch the way some "natural" claims are. That said, check what the coir is bonded with: rubberized coir made with natural latex is a very different product from one bonded with synthetic adhesives.
Coir fibers absorb and release moisture rather than trapping it against you, which helps if you sweat at night.
A coir-dominant mattress can create real pressure at the shoulder and hip. Side sleepers and lighter sleepers are the most likely to struggle. If you have been told a firm bed is better for your back, that advice is oversimplified: what most backs need is neutral spinal alignment, which sometimes means firm and sometimes does not. A rigid support panel does not absorb movement. If you share the bed with a restless partner, a coir core is not the answer.
The same absorbency that helps in normal use becomes a liability in a genuinely damp room with poor ventilation. Coir that stays wet can grow mold. Use a breathable foundation with a slatted or open base rather than putting the mattress directly on the floor.
There is a wide gap between a well-made rubberized coir layer and a cheap compressed coir board. The cheap version can break down into a lumpy, uneven surface within a couple of years. The material name on the label tells you very little on its own.
Latex is springier, more contouring, and more expensive. Coir is firmer, flatter and cheaper. Many natural mattresses use both: coir for the base support and latex above it for comfort. See our guide to latex for how that layer behaves.
Coils give you point-by-point response and a bounce coir cannot match, plus better motion isolation when they are individually pocketed. Coir gives you a uniform, immovable support plane. Read more on innerspring construction.
Foam contours; coir does not. Foam traps heat; coir does not. If you want pressure relief, foam wins. If you want a firm, cool, natural support layer, coir does that better.
Consider it if you genuinely prefer a firm sleep surface, you sleep hot, you are a back or stomach sleeper, and you want natural materials. It is a poor fit if you are a side sleeper, if you have hip or shoulder pain, or if you share a bed with someone who moves a lot.
In the United States, mattresses built entirely around coir are uncommon. What you will find far more often, and what most shoppers looking at coir actually want, is a natural latex or latex hybrid mattress: similar breathability and natural materials, but with pressure relief that coir cannot provide on its own. It can be, if a firm surface keeps your spine in neutral alignment. For back and stomach sleepers, that is often the case. For side sleepers, a firm coir surface tends to push the hip and shoulder out of line rather than into it. The right answer depends on your body and sleep position rather than on the material, and the only reliable test is lying on it for ten minutes.
A well-made rubberized coir layer is durable and holds its shape for years. A cheap compressed coir board can flatten unevenly in two or three. As with most mattress materials, the construction quality matters far more than the material name.
