Zoned support varies a mattress firmness from head to foot, firmer under the hips and softer at the shoulders. Here is how 3, 5 and 7 zone designs work and who benefits.

Walk into any mattress showroom and you will eventually hear the word "zoned." Five zones, seven zones, targeted lumbar support, reinforced center third. It sounds like marketing, and sometimes it is. But the underlying idea is sound engineering, and for certain sleepers it is the difference between waking up fine and waking up with a sore lower back.
Here is what zoned support actually means, how to tell whether a mattress is genuinely zoned or just labelled that way, and whether you need it.
Your body is not one uniform weight. Lie on your back and roughly half your mass sits in your hips and torso, concentrated over a short stretch of the mattress. Your shoulders are heavy but narrow. Your legs and head are comparatively light.
A mattress built with the same support across its whole surface has to compromise. Firm enough to hold your hips up and it will push back too hard against your shoulders. Soft enough to let your shoulder sink and your hips drop into a hammock, which pulls your lower back out of neutral alignment.
A zoned mattress solves this by varying the support along its length. The middle third, under your hips and lumbar spine, is built firmer. The shoulder region is built softer so the shoulder can sink in. The result is a mattress that holds your spine closer to the straight line it has when you are standing, without you having to choose one firmness and live with the compromise.
There are three common methods, and they are not equivalent.
In a pocketed coil unit, the manufacturer uses thicker-gauge or more tightly wound springs through the center third of the mattress and lighter springs at the head and foot. Because each coil moves independently, the firmer center pushes back harder under the hips while the softer sections let the shoulders settle. This is the most durable form of zoning because it is built into the support core rather than the comfort layers. Our guide to pocket spring construction covers how the coil unit works.
Convoluted or channel-cut foam layers are shaped so that different regions have different resistance. Deeper cuts and wider channels create softer areas, solid sections create firmer ones. Latex is often zoned this way by drilling pin-core holes at varying densities. Foam zoning is effective, though it lives in the comfort layer and so it can soften over the years faster than coil zoning does.
Different foam densities are laid side by side across the width or length of the mattress. This is less common and harder to do well, since the transitions between zones can be felt if the densities differ too sharply.
The number simply counts how many distinct support regions run from head to foot. It is not a quality rating, and more zones is not automatically better.
A 3 zone mattress is the simplest useful version: softer at the shoulders, firmer through the hips and lumbar, medium at the legs. A 5 zone design adds finer transitions, typically head, shoulders, lumbar, thighs and feet. A 7 zone design splits those further still.
Beyond about five zones the returns diminish quickly, because human bodies vary in height and a 7 zone layout only lines up correctly if you happen to be the height the designer assumed. A 3 zone mattress with a well-executed firm center third will often outperform a 7 zone mattress with poorly differentiated zones. Judge the execution, not the number on the label.
This is the clearest case. Side sleeping puts your shoulder and hip in direct contact with the mattress while your waist floats above it. Zoning lets the shoulder sink without the hip following, which keeps the spine straight rather than bowing. See our guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers for the full picture.
A firmer lumbar zone is doing exactly what a physiotherapist would ask a mattress to do: stop the pelvis from rotating backward as the hips sink. If your lower back is worst in the morning and eases as the day goes on, your current mattress is a plausible suspect, and zoning is worth trying. Browse the back pain collection for options.
The more weight concentrated over the hips, the more a uniform mattress sags there. Zoned support with reinforced center coils is the standard answer, and it also slows the development of a permanent body impression.
Zoning runs head to foot, so it helps both partners independently as long as they are roughly similar heights. Some premium beds also split zoning left and right, which is a different and less common feature worth asking about specifically.
Stomach sleepers get the least from zoning, and can actively dislike it. If you sleep face down, you want a flat firm surface that keeps your hips from dropping. A softer shoulder zone does nothing useful and a pronounced lumbar zone can push your lower back into extension.
Lighter back sleepers under about 130 pounds often will not compress a mattress enough for the zones to engage at all, so they are paying for a feature they cannot feel. And anyone who simply sleeps well on their current uniform mattress does not need to go looking for a problem.
Press down hard with your palm at the shoulder area of the mattress, then at the hip area, then at the foot. On a genuinely zoned bed you will feel a clear difference in resistance between the middle and the ends. On a bed that is zoned in name only, it will feel the same everywhere.
Then lie on it in your actual sleeping position for at least five minutes and have someone check whether your spine looks straight from behind. That is the real test, and it is why we would rather you came in than ordered blind. Our guide on how to test a mattress in store covers the rest of the checklist, including edge support, which zoning does not address.
It is a construction method where the mattress provides different levels of firmness in different regions from head to foot, usually firmer under the hips and lumbar spine and softer under the shoulders, so that your spine stays in neutral alignment rather than sagging or arching.
A mattress divided into seven distinct support regions running from head to foot. In practice the shoulder and lumbar zones do most of the work, and the extra divisions add refinement rather than a step change in feel.
It means the mattress is designed to respond differently under each part of your body. Whether you feel the benefit depends on your height matching the zone layout, your weight being enough to compress the zones, and the quality of the differentiation between them.
Five support regions, typically head, shoulders, lumbar, thighs and feet. For most sleepers this hits the sweet spot between meaningful targeting and reliable alignment with real body proportions.
The simplest zoned design: a softer shoulder section, a firmer center section under the hips and lower back, and a medium section for the legs. Well executed, it delivers most of the benefit of more complex layouts.
A mattress whose pocketed coil unit uses five bands of different spring gauges or coil counts across its length. Because the zoning is in the springs rather than the foam, it tends to hold its character longer than foam-only zoning.
The same concept described from the manufacturing side: building the support core and comfort layers with deliberate regional variation rather than uniform material throughout.
The honest answer is that zoning helps a lot of people and does nothing for others, and five minutes lying on the right bed will tell you which you are.
