Black Friday discounts current stock more deeply. Labor Day clears floor models and discontinued lines. Here is how to tell which one is the better buy for you.

Both are real sale events, and the honest answer to which is better is that they discount different things. Black Friday cuts deeper on current stock you can order in any size. Labor Day clears floor models and discontinued lines, which produces bigger headline percentages on a much narrower set of items. Which one saves you more depends entirely on which of those you are buying.
Here is how the two differ in practice, and how to decide without simply waiting by default.
Labor Day sits at the end of the summer selling season, just before manufacturers refresh their lineups for autumn. Retailers need the floor clear for new stock. That makes the deepest Labor Day reductions clearance reductions: one queen in one firmness, one king in one cover, sold once and gone. The percentages are genuinely large because the alternative is storing a mattress nobody can sell as new.
Black Friday is a demand event rather than an inventory event. Manufacturers fund promotions to capture the year's highest-intent shopping weekend, so the discounting applies broadly across current, orderable stock. The percentages are usually smaller than a Labor Day clearance tag, but they apply to the model you actually want in the size you actually need.
Labor Day 2026 is Monday, September 7. Black Friday is November 27. That is eleven weeks apart.
If your current mattress is sagging, or you are waking with back or hip pain, eleven weeks is roughly eighty more nights of bad sleep bought in exchange for a discount that may be a few percentage points deeper. That is rarely a good trade, and it is the part of the comparison that gets left out when the question is framed purely as which sale is bigger.
The reverse also holds. If your mattress is fine and you are upgrading rather than replacing, waiting costs you nothing and Black Friday is the safer bet for current stock.
A few things are worth checking at either event, because they affect the real cost more than the headline number does.
Judge the finished price, not the percentage. A percentage is calculated from a list price the seller chooses. Two retailers quoting 70% and 25% off can land within a few dollars of each other. Ask what the out-the-door total is with the foundation and delivery included.
Check the exchange terms. A sale price with no comfort exchange behind it is a worse deal than a smaller discount with one, because the risk of getting the firmness wrong does not go away just because the price dropped. Ours is the 120-night Love Your Bed Guarantee, which covers one exchange per purchase, any brand or size we have in stock, with a flat $100 pickup and redelivery fee.
Check whether it is still in production. Buying a discontinued model at a clearance price can be an excellent decision, but you should make it knowingly, because you will not be able to match it later if you need a second one.
Presidents Day and Memorial Day work on the same clearance logic as Labor Day, at a smaller scale. The practical effect is that there is a meaningful mattress sale roughly every eight to ten weeks, which undercuts the idea that any single weekend is a rare opportunity. Our guide to when to buy a mattress across the year maps the full calendar, and the Labor Day buying guide covers what tends to be discounted at this one.
Yes, particularly if you are flexible on size or firmness. Manufacturers refresh their lineups in late summer, so retailers are clearing floor models and discontinued stock rather than simply running a promotion, and those reductions are real. It is a weaker event if you need one specific current model in one specific size.
The clearance side is not marketing; it is inventory that has to move before new stock arrives. The broad "everything is on sale" side is a funded promotion and is more modest. Both are genuine, they are just different sizes of discount on different things.
On current, orderable stock, usually a little. On clearance and floor models, no, because the specific unit you saw in September will have sold by late November. And if your existing mattress is already costing you sleep, the eleven-week wait is its own price.
They are structurally similar, both clearing stock ahead of a lineup change. Labor Day tends to be the larger of the two because it sits at the end of the summer season, but the difference is smaller than the difference between either of them and Black Friday.
Judge by the out-the-door price rather than the discount percentage and the question resolves itself. If two retailers quote the same finished number, it does not matter what percentage each of them claims.
