A mattress protector is a barrier between your mattress and everything that lands on it — spills, sweat, skin cells, dust mites, allergens, and (for younger sleepers) accidents. A good protector adds zero feel to the mattress and extends its usable life by 3–5 years. Every mattress warranty we sell requires a protector to stay valid.
The two protector types. Encasement (zips around all six sides — the strongest barrier, the only kind that protects against bed bugs); top-only fitted protector (covers the sleep surface plus the side walls, fits like a deep-pocket sheet). Encasement is more secure; fitted is faster to swap and wash.
Waterproof vs. breathable. Waterproof protectors use a polyurethane film backing — full liquid barrier, but slightly warmer to sleep on. "Breathable waterproof" uses a vapor-permeable membrane — almost as good a liquid barrier with much better airflow. For hot sleepers, choose breathable waterproof; for kids or pets in bed, choose full waterproof.
Sizing and pricing. Protectors come in every standard mattress size and most depths up to 18". Pricing runs $50-150 depending on size and tech.
