That is the answer that works most of the time. Blanket sizing is not federally standardised the way mattress sizing is, so brands vary by a few inches. These are the common ranges you will see on labels.

Two things stand out. First, a king blanket is much wider than a queen but the same length — length is driven by mattress length, and king and queen mattresses are both 80 inches long. The part the chart leaves out: mattress depth
Standard blanket sizing assumes a mattress somewhere around 10 to 12 inches thick. Plenty of mattresses now are 14 or 15 inches, and if you add a topper you can be at 17 or 18.
Every extra inch of mattress depth eats an inch of drop on each side. On a 12-inch queen, a 90-inch blanket gives you about 15 inches of overhang per side — comfortable. Put the same blanket on an 18-inch queen with a topper and you are down to about 9 inches per side, which is barely past the edge of the mattress. It will look skimpy and it will pull off you the moment your partner rolls over.
The fix is simple: if your total sleeping stack is thicker than about 14 inches, size up one bed size. A king blanket on a deep queen bed looks intentional and behaves far better. This is also why people who add a mattress topper often find their existing bedding suddenly stops working — nothing is wrong with the blanket, the bed just got taller.
How to work out the size you need
If you want to skip the guessing, measure it directly.
- Measure your mattress width — 60 inches for a standard queen, but measure rather than assume, especially on older or specialty beds.
- Measure the total depth of the mattress plus any topper, from the top surface down to where the mattress meets the foundation.
- Decide your drop. Roughly 12 to 15 inches of hang per side looks and feels right for most beds. Less than 8 inches feels tight; more than 20 tends to puddle on the floor.
- Do the maths: mattress width + (2 × depth) + (2 × desired drop past the mattress edge). For a 60-inch-wide, 14-inch-deep queen where you want the blanket to fall about 4 inches below the mattress bottom: 60 + 28 + 8 = 96 inches. A 90-inch queen blanket is slightly short; a king blanket is the better call.
For length, add roughly 12 to 18 inches to your mattress length so you can tuck the foot and still pull the top edge up over your shoulders.
Blanket, comforter, duvet or throw?
These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.
A blanket is a single layer — cotton, wool, fleece, knit. It is a temperature-regulating layer you can add or remove, which makes it the most useful piece of bedding in Los Angeles, where a 90-degree afternoon can turn into a 55-degree night. Most LA households need a light blanket far more often than a heavy comforter.

A throw is not bed-sized at all. At about 50 by 60 inches, a throw is meant for a sofa, a chair, or draping across the foot of the bed as a decorative layer. If you bought one expecting to sleep under it on a queen, that is why it does not cover you.
A few practical notes
If you share the bed and one of you steals covers, go up a size. A king blanket on a queen bed gives both people enough width that a normal roll-over does not strip the other side. It is the cheapest fix for a very common problem.
Check for shrinkage. Cotton and wool blankets can lose 3 to 5 percent on the first wash. If a blanket is already borderline, buy the larger size or wash cold and skip the hot dryer.
Layer rather than buying one heavy blanket. Two lighter layers give you far more control across an LA year than a single thick one, and they are easier to wash.
