A king comforter needs more drum space than most home washers have. Here is the capacity you actually need, how to check yours, and what to do if it does not fit.

The short answer: you want a washer with at least 4.5 cubic feet of drum capacity for a standard king comforter, and 5.0 cubic feet or more if yours is a thick down or down alternative duvet. Anything smaller and you are not really washing it, you are packing it into a drum where water and detergent cannot circulate, which leaves soap in the fill and puts real strain on the machine.
That is the headline. The rest of this guide covers how to find out what capacity your washer actually has, why the fit matters more than people expect, and what to do when the numbers do not work out.
| Comforter | Minimum washer capacity | Comfortable capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Twin or full, lightweight | 3.5 cu ft | 4.0 cu ft |
| Queen, standard loft | 4.0 cu ft | 4.5 cu ft |
| King, standard loft | 4.5 cu ft | 5.0 cu ft |
| King, thick down or heavy alternative fill | 5.0 cu ft | 5.5 cu ft or commercial |
| California king, oversized or weighted | 5.5 cu ft | Laundromat commercial machine |
Note that loft matters more than dimensions. A thin quilted king comforter and a baffle-box down duvet are the same size flat but behave completely differently once wet, because the down absorbs water and swells.
Most people have no idea what their washer holds, and the number is rarely printed anywhere obvious. Three ways to find it:
At equal stated capacity, a front loader handles a king comforter better. It tumbles the load through the water rather than pushing it against a central agitator, so bulky items move and rinse more evenly, and there is no post or agitator stealing usable drum space.
If you have a top loader, the impeller style (a low disc at the bottom) is much better for comforters than the old-fashioned tall agitator type. A tall agitator eats a significant chunk of the drum and tends to wrap and twist a comforter around itself, which strains seams and leaves sections unwashed.
Load the dry comforter loosely into the drum, do not stuff or fold it tightly, and look for these:
If it fills the drum completely dry, it will not clean properly wet, because fabric needs room to move through water for detergent to reach it. A comforter crammed into a drum comes out with detergent residue trapped in the fill, which attracts dirt faster and can irritate skin.
Go to a laundromat. Commercial front loaders typically run 6 to 8 cubic feet or more, they cost a few dollars, and they do the job properly in one pass. For most people this is the practical answer, and it beats replacing a working washer.
Use a duvet cover and wash that instead. This is the real long-term fix. A duvet insert inside a washable cover means you launder the cover every week or two with the sheets, and the insert itself only needs washing once or twice a year. Our guide on duvets versus comforters explains the difference and why the duvet system is easier to live with.
Spot clean between full washes. Most comforters do not need a full wash nearly as often as people assume, especially under a top sheet. Treat marks as they happen and air the comforter outdoors on a dry day.
Use professional cleaning for down. Genuine down comforters, especially high fill power ones, respond well to professional laundering, and it is cheap insurance against ruining an expensive duvet in an undersized drum.
Aim for at least 4.5 cubic feet of drum capacity for a standard king comforter, and 5.0 cubic feet or more for a thick down or heavy alternative fill. Front loaders handle the same capacity better than top loaders because there is no agitator taking up space.
Load it in dry first. If you can slide a flat hand between the comforter and the top of the drum and it still has room to move when you press it down, you are fine. If it fills the drum when dry, it will not clean properly and you risk straining the motor and bearings during the spin cycle.
In practical terms, a machine marketed as large capacity or mega capacity, which is usually 4.5 cubic feet or more. Standard top loaders at 3.5 cubic feet are too small for a king comforter, and apartment sized units under 3.0 cubic feet are not an option at all.
Use a gentle or bulky cycle, cold or warm water, about half the usual detergent, and an extra rinse. Dry on low heat with dryer balls, pulling it out to shake and redistribute the fill every half hour. Plan on two to three hours of drying, and make sure it is completely dry before it goes back on the bed.
Usually yes for a standard loft comforter, and it is right at the limit for a thick down duvet. If yours is a heavy winter weight, you will get a better result at a laundromat.
Two to three times a year is enough for most households if you use a top sheet or a duvet cover, and more often if you sleep without either, share the bed with pets, or have allergies. Sheets are a different matter; see our guide on how often to wash your sheets.
If you are washing a comforter that has lost its loft and never quite recovers, that is usually the fill telling you it is done.
