Adjustable bed bases span a wide price range, and the jumps between tiers buy specific features. Here is what you get at each level, what drives the cost, and where the money is worth spending.

The honest answer is that adjustable beds span a wider price range than almost anything else in a bedroom, and the spread is not arbitrary. A base at the bottom of the range and a base at the top do the same core job, which is raising your head and your feet. What the extra money buys is the motor, the frame, the presets and the parts that determine whether it is still quiet and level in eight years.
Two things to sort out before you look at any number. First, an adjustable base and an adjustable bed are often quoted differently: some prices include a mattress and some do not, and that single difference can double a figure. Second, adjustable bases go on sale more aggressively than mattresses do, and bundle pricing with a mattress is common, so the sticker is rarely what people actually pay. Treat the ranges below as a map of the territory, then confirm current pricing on the products themselves.
At the bottom of the range you get head and foot articulation, a wireless remote, and a steel frame with legs. That is it, and for a lot of people that is genuinely enough. If your reason for wanting an adjustable base is reading in bed, acid reflux, or elevating your legs after standing all day, a basic base does all of that. The compromises are a louder motor, a slower travel speed, fewer position presets, and a lighter-duty frame that may not be rated for heavier mattresses or heavier sleepers.
This is where most people land, and it is the tier with the best value per dollar. The step up typically adds a zero gravity preset, programmable memory positions, a quieter motor, massage motors at the head and foot, USB charging ports, under-bed lighting, and a wall-hugging mechanism that slides the base back as it raises so your nightstand stays within reach. The frame and motors are also built to a higher duty cycle, which is the part you cannot see and the part that decides how long it lasts.
At the top you are paying for refinement and for automation. Lumbar support as a separate articulating section, snore response that raises the head a few degrees when it detects snoring, app control, sleep tracking, and integrated headboard brackets so the base disappears into a bed frame. Some premium bases also offer a dedicated pillow tilt. Whether these justify the jump depends entirely on whether you will use them. Snore response and lumbar articulation are the two features people actually report using every night. The sleep tracking usually is not.
Twin XL and full bases are the cheapest. Queen is the volume size and usually the best value. King is where it gets interesting, because there are two very different products sold under that word.
A king adjustable base is a single unit that moves as one piece. Both sleepers get the same position, which is fine if you always want the same thing and a problem if you do not.
A split king is two twin XL bases side by side under two twin XL mattresses, each with its own motor and remote. That means you are buying two of everything, so a split king costs roughly double a twin XL base, and it usually costs more than a single king base of the same model. It also means two mattresses, and a bridge or connector kit if you want the bed to feel continuous. Most couples who genuinely want independent positions decide the extra cost is the whole point, but it is the one place where an adjustable bed budget quietly doubles.
The base is only half the purchase. An adjustable base needs a mattress that can flex without damaging itself, which in practice means memory foam, latex or a hybrid built with pocketed coils and a flexible border. A traditional innerspring with a rigid perimeter wire will not bend, and forcing it will break it.
If you already own a compatible mattress, you are only buying the base. If you do not, budget for both, and expect the mattress to be the larger of the two line items on anything but a premium base. Our guide to the best mattress for an adjustable bed covers what works and what does not.
If we had to rank it: quiet motors and a solid frame first, because those decide whether you keep using the bed. Wall hugging second, because a base that pushes you away from your nightstand is annoying every single night. Zero gravity preset third, since it is the position most people end up using and having it on one button matters. Massage and lighting are nice and nobody has ever returned a base for lacking them.
If your interest in an adjustable bed is medical rather than recreational, it is also worth reading our piece on whether Medicare covers adjustable beds before you buy, because the rules around what qualifies are narrower than most people expect.
Base only, the range runs from a few hundred dollars for a basic head-and-foot model to several thousand for a premium base with lumbar support and snore response, with most queen-size purchases landing in the middle of that range. Adding a compatible mattress typically costs as much again or more. Bundle and sale pricing is common, so the advertised price and the paid price often differ.
A single king base costs somewhat more than a queen of the same model. A split king costs roughly double a twin XL base, because it is two complete bases with two motors and two remotes, plus two twin XL mattresses. If independent head and foot positions for each sleeper are the reason you want an adjustable bed, budget for split king from the start rather than being surprised later.
It requires a flexible one, which is not quite the same as special. Memory foam, latex and most pocketed-coil hybrids bend fine. Traditional innersprings with a rigid perimeter wire do not, and neither do very thick or very stiff mattresses. Most mattresses sold in the last decade are adjustable-base compatible, but check the specification before assuming.
Usually yes, as long as it flexes. A standard memory foam or hybrid mattress you already own will almost certainly work. What will not work is an old innerspring with a bordered edge wire, a mattress with a rigid internal frame, or anything the manufacturer specifically excludes. Using an incompatible mattress can void its warranty, so it is worth a quick check rather than a guess.
For some sleepers, clearly. If you have acid reflux, snore, swell in the legs, read in bed, or find that elevating your knees relieves lower back pressure, an adjustable base changes how you sleep every night and is easy to justify. If you sleep flat on your stomach and have no complaints, it is an expensive accessory. The test is whether you already prop yourself up with pillows, because that is the problem the base solves properly.
Most people buying a queen adjustable base end up in the mid tier, which is the level that includes zero gravity, memory positions, wall hugging and a quieter motor. That is where the feature set stops feeling compromised and before the price starts buying automation most people do not use.
Adjustable beds are difficult to evaluate on a spec sheet, because the thing that decides whether you like one is how a position feels under your own back, and how loud the motor is in a quiet room. Our showrooms carry bases from ErgoPedic, Symphony Sleep, Malouf and Tempur-Pedic, and you are welcome to lie on them and run them through the full travel.
