Stored bedding comes back smelling musty, flattened or full of moth holes for predictable reasons. Here is how to wash, pack and store blankets so they come out fresh.

Bedding that goes into storage looking fine and comes out smelling like a basement is one of those small annoyances with entirely predictable causes. It is almost always one of three things: the blanket went away slightly damp, it was sealed in plastic with nowhere for air to go, or it was stored dirty and the body oils in the fibers oxidised over a few months. Fix those and stored bedding comes out ready to use.
In Los Angeles this matters more than people expect. Heavy bedding spends eight or nine months of the year packed away, garages swing thirty degrees between night and afternoon, and anyone west of the 405 is dealing with marine-layer moisture most mornings. Longer storage in a less stable environment means the preparation step does more work.
Never store bedding you have slept under without washing it first. Body oils, skin cells and sweat are invisible on a clean-looking blanket, and over months in the dark they yellow the fabric, set into permanent stains and attract both moths and dust mites. Clothes moths in particular are drawn to the protein residue rather than the wool itself.
Then dry it beyond what feels necessary. This is the step that causes most storage failures. A comforter can feel dry on the surface while the core of the fill is still slightly damp, and sealed in a container that becomes mildew within weeks. Squeeze the thickest sections and feel for coolness, then give it another twenty to thirty minutes. Air-drying afterward, draped over a chair or a rail for a few hours in a dry shaded spot, is cheap insurance.
If something is dry clean only, have it cleaned and then let it air out of the plastic bag for a day before packing. Dry cleaning solvent needs to evaporate, and storing it sealed in the shop bag traps the smell in the fibers.
The container matters more than anything except dryness. The rule is simple: natural fibers need airflow, synthetics do not care much.
You are looking for cool, dark and dry, and consistency matters more than any single measurement. A linen closet or the shelf above a bedroom closet is close to ideal. Under-bed storage is the next best option in a small apartment, provided the containers close properly and the floor stays dry.
Avoid garages, unventilated attics and the space under a bathroom sink. Garages in particular look convenient and are the worst choice: large daily temperature swings cause condensation inside sealed containers, and the pest traffic is higher. If the garage is genuinely your only option, use sealed plastic bins, keep them off the concrete floor on a pallet or shelf, and check them once mid-season.
Direct sunlight fades fabric and degrades fibers, so keep storage away from a sunny window even indoors.
Roll anything you are keeping for a long time. Folding creates hard creases along the same lines every year, and on a wool blanket or an older quilt those crease lines are where the fibers eventually weaken and split. Rolling distributes the stress and usually takes less shelf depth too.
If you prefer to fold, refold along different lines each season so the creases move, and do not stack heavy items more than four or five deep. Weight compresses whatever is at the bottom, and a down comforter under a pile of quilts loses loft it will not fully regain.
A few things genuinely work, and one popular option is worth skipping.
One more habit worth adopting: air stored bedding for a few hours before putting it on the bed, even if it smells fine. A stored comforter that has been folded for eight months needs time to regain loft, and a few hours draped over a chair does it.
Small LA apartments rarely come with a linen closet, so the storage often has to live in the room. That is fine if you treat it as storage rather than decoration.
Wool: clean it before storage without exception, since moths target the residue. Store in breathable cotton with cedar nearby and never compressed.
Down and feather: loft is the whole value, so store loosely in a large cotton bag and never vacuum sealed. Do not stack anything heavy on top.
Weighted blankets: store flat or loosely rolled rather than hanging, because hanging lets the glass beads migrate to one end and creates permanent dead spots. Our guide to washing a weighted blanket covers the cleaning half.
Electric and heated blankets: coil the cord loosely rather than folding it tightly, since sharp creases stress the internal wiring. Roll the blanket instead of folding for the same reason, and store somewhere dry.
Cooling blankets: most use technical fibers that store like synthetics, so a lidded bin is fine. Our cooling blankets guide explains how the materials work.
Roll them rather than folding, keep them in breathable cotton bags or pillowcases if they are wool or down, and store them on a shelf rather than at floor level where dust and moisture collect. Leave a little air between items instead of packing the shelf tight, and add a cedar block if wool is involved.
A lidded woven basket, a storage ottoman or a closed console keeps them within reach while protecting them from dust and sunlight. A blanket ladder looks good and works for one or two throws in daily use, but anything stored openly needs washing more often because it collects airborne dust.
Keep the comforter loose and put it on top rather than underneath, because it is the item most easily damaged by compression. Blankets and quilts can be rolled and stacked below it. If you are using one large bin, do not force the lid, since that pressure is what flattens fill.
Somewhere cool, dark, dry and stable in temperature. A linen closet or the top shelf of a bedroom closet is ideal, and under-bed bins are a good second choice. Garages, attics and anywhere near a bathroom are poor options because of humidity swings and pests.
Use the space under the bed with lidded bins or a storage bed frame, or keep a lidded basket or storage ottoman in the room. Both keep dust off, which is the main risk with open storage. Vacuum bags work well here for synthetic bedding, though they should not be used for down or wool.
Wash or dry clean them first, since moths are attracted to skin oils and food residue rather than the wool itself. Store them clean in a breathable cotton bag with cedar nearby, rolled rather than folded, and never sealed in plastic or vacuum compressed. Check them once mid-season if they are stored for more than six months.
Swapping bedding is the natural moment to deal with everything underneath it. Vacuuming the mattress and rotating it takes ten minutes, and our guides to how often to wash your sheets and getting rid of dust mites cover the rest of the routine. A washable topper or protector keeps the mattress itself out of the equation entirely.
If the mattress is the part that has seen better days, take our sleep quiz for a firmness recommendation or come try a few in any of our five LA showrooms. Same-day delivery reaches most of Los Angeles, and our free 120-night comfort guarantee gives you a full season to be sure.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
