What a cooling blanket really does, the three things that make one work, and how to tell a genuinely breathable blanket from a marketing label.

A cooling blanket is a bed blanket built to move heat and moisture away from your body faster than an ordinary one. It does not refrigerate you, and nothing you buy off a shelf plugs into the wall. What a good one does is stop trapping the heat you produce, which for a lot of hot sleepers is the whole problem.
That distinction matters, because the category is crowded with blankets labelled cooling that are simply thin. Here is what actually makes one work.
This does most of the work. Fibers differ enormously in how fast they conduct heat away from skin and how much moisture they can absorb before they feel damp.
Some blankets are treated with a phase change material, a substance engineered to absorb heat as it changes state and release it later. These are the fabrics that feel noticeably cold to the touch when you first get in.
They are real, and they do buy you something. What they do not do is run all night. A phase change layer has a finite capacity, and once it has absorbed as much heat as it can hold, it stops being cool and behaves like ordinary fabric until it has a chance to release that heat. If you overheat at 2am rather than at bedtime, a phase change blanket alone will not solve it. Breathability will.
A blanket that traps a pocket of still air against you is an insulator, regardless of what it is made of. Open weaves, waffle textures and lighter weights all let warm air escape instead of banking it. This is also why a heavier blanket rarely sleeps cool even in a cooling fiber: mass holds heat.
Yes, with a realistic expectation of what working means.
A well-made bamboo viscose, lyocell or linen blanket will measurably reduce how much heat and humidity sits against your skin compared with a polyester fleece or a dense quilted comforter. Most people notice it as waking up less, not as feeling cold.
What it will not do is fix overheating that is coming from somewhere else. If your mattress is the thing holding the heat, a better blanket is a small correction to a large problem. Dense memory foam without much airflow is the usual culprit, and no blanket sits between you and it. Our guide to the best cooling mattress covers what to look for there, and a breathable topper for hot sleepers is the cheaper intermediate fix.
Read the fiber content, not the product name. Cooling is not a regulated claim. The label on the care tag tells you the truth. If it says 100 percent polyester, it is a thin fleece with a good name.
Match the weight to your season, not to the year. In Los Angeles you realistically need two blankets, not one. A light lyocell or linen layer carries you from May through October, and something with a bit more substance handles the 50-degree January nights. Layering two light blankets beats owning one heavy one, because you can subtract a layer at 3am without getting out of bed.
Size up if the bed is deep. Every inch of mattress and topper thickness eats an inch of drop on each side. A blanket that is technically the right size for your mattress can end up barely covering two people.
Be careful with cooling weighted blankets. Weight and airflow pull against each other. Some are genuinely built with breathable covers and glass bead fill rather than plastic pellets, but many are not. If you want the pressure and you sleep hot, look for a removable lyocell or bamboo cover and glass beads.
Check whether the cooling is a coating. Some finishes are applied topically and wash out over a dozen cycles. A fiber that is inherently breathable does not have that problem.
If you are working through a heat problem properly, tackle it in this order. The blanket is not first.
Most cooling blankets want cold or warm water on a gentle cycle and a low tumble dry or a line dry. Two rules do most of the work: skip the fabric softener, and skip high heat.
Fabric softener coats fibers with a thin waxy film. On a blanket whose entire job is wicking moisture away from your skin, that film is precisely what you do not want. It is the single fastest way to make a good cooling blanket stop working. High dryer heat does the other kind of damage, shrinking cellulose fibers and, on treated fabrics, degrading the finish.
Wash it every two to four weeks if it sits directly against you, less often if there is a top sheet in between. Run a separate load if the blanket is bulky, since a crowded drum will not rinse detergent out properly.
Two mechanisms. Most of the effect comes from fibers that conduct heat away from skin quickly and absorb moisture so sweat evaporates rather than sitting against you. Some blankets add a phase change material that absorbs heat as it changes state, which produces the cold-to-the-touch sensation when you first climb in. Neither mechanism actively refrigerates. They remove heat you are already producing instead of adding cold.
A blanket in a breathable fiber genuinely reduces the heat and humidity trapped against your body compared with polyester fleece or a dense comforter. What it cannot do is overcome a hot mattress, a hot room, or non-breathable sheets underneath it. If those are your real problem, a cooling blanket will feel like a modest improvement rather than a fix.
The ones that work are usually bamboo viscose, lyocell, linen, or open-weave cotton. Some add a phase change treatment to the fabric surface. Blankets marketed as cooling but made from polyester microfiber or fleece rely on being thin rather than on any cooling property, and they trap moisture.
Cold or warm water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, and either a low tumble dry or a line dry. Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets: they leave a film on the fibers that blocks the wicking the blanket depends on. Check the care label first, since weighted and phase change versions often have their own restrictions.
Standard cooling blankets are ordinary bedding and carry no particular risk. Look for an OEKO-TEX certification if chemical finishes concern you, since it verifies the fabric has been tested for harmful substances. Weighted versions are the exception: they are not appropriate for infants or toddlers, and anyone with a breathing or circulation condition should check with their doctor before using one.
A blanket is a cheap experiment and worth running. But if you have already tried better bedding and you are still waking up hot, the mattress is where to look next, and that is something you have to feel rather than read about.
