Hotel pillows feel better than yours for reasons that have little to do with luxury and a lot to do with fill weight, size and how many are on the bed. Here is what hotels actually use and how to copy it.

You sleep better in a hotel than you do at home, and the pillow gets most of the credit. It is not a trick of the vacation. Hotel pillows really are built differently from the ones most people buy, but the difference is less about a secret brand and more about three ordinary decisions: what goes inside, how much of it goes inside, and how many of them end up on the bed.
Most hotels use one of two things. Upper-tier properties use down or a down and feather blend, usually a feather core with a down outer chamber so the pillow has structure underneath and softness on top. Everyone else uses down alternative, which is a polyester microfiber or gel fiber fill engineered to mimic down at a fraction of the cost and with no allergy concerns.
Memory foam and latex are rare in hotels. They hold their shape too specifically for a room that has to work for a side sleeper on Monday and a back sleeper on Tuesday, and they do not survive commercial laundering.
This is the biggest single factor and the one nobody guesses. A hotel pillow carries a higher fill weight than a retail pillow of the same size and description. More fill means more loft, more resistance, and a pillow that still has body after you press your head into it. A soft retail pillow is soft because it is underfilled. A hotel pillow is soft because a lot of fill has been given room to move.
Plenty of hotels put king pillows on a queen bed. The pillow reads as generous before you touch it, and once you are lying down the extra width means your head never runs out of pillow when you roll. It is a cheap upgrade that guests consistently notice without being able to name.
Two per side is standard, and the stack is not decorative. The bottom pillow is usually the firmer or denser one and the top pillow is the softer one, so you get support underneath and give on the surface. Most people at home sleep on one pillow and then wonder why their neck aches.
A fresh protector, a fresh case, and a pillow that has been through professional laundering and commercial drying. A lot of what reads as comfort is really just the absence of the dust, oils and flattening that accumulate in a pillow you have not washed in a year.
Hotel pillows are optimized for the average guest, not for you. A property has no idea whether the person checking in sleeps on their side, their back or their stomach, so it buys a medium-soft pillow that offends nobody. That is a sensible business decision and a mediocre sleep decision.
If you are a dedicated side sleeper with broad shoulders, the gap between your ear and the mattress is larger than a hotel pillow is built to fill, which is why you end up folding one in half or stacking two. If you sleep on your stomach, most hotel pillows are too lofty and push your neck into extension all night. The hotel feel is worth copying. The hotel specification is not.
We stock Malouf pillows across down alternative, gel fiber and shredded latex fills, which covers most of what a hotel would use plus the options a hotel cannot offer. For natural fills, Sleep and Beyond makes wool and cotton pillows that breathe better than polyester, which matters through a Los Angeles summer more than it would most places.
The honest advice is to test them. A pillow is the cheapest part of a bed and the one people get wrong most often, and five minutes lying on one in a showroom tells you more than any description does. Worth noting: a pillow can only do so much if the mattress underneath it is pushing your spine out of line. If you wake up with neck or shoulder pain no matter what pillow you use, the mattress is the more likely culprit, and our guide to what mattresses hotels use is the other half of this question.
Luxury hotels mostly use down or a feather and down blend, often with a firmer feather core and a softer down outer layer. Mid-range and budget hotels use down alternative, a polyester microfiber or gel fiber fill. Both are chosen to be medium-soft so they work for any guest, and both are selected for how well they survive commercial laundering.
Mostly fill weight. Hotel pillows carry more fill than comparable retail pillows, so they stay lofty under the weight of your head instead of flattening. Add oversized dimensions, two pillows per sleeper stacked firm under soft, and a freshly laundered protector and case, and you get a bed that feels better than the one at home without using anything exotic.
The fill is duck or goose down, a feather and down blend, or polyester microfiber marketed as down alternative. The shell is usually a tightly woven cotton, often around a 230 to 300 thread count, woven densely enough to stop feather tips poking through. Gel fiber is a common variant of the polyester fill that clumps less over time.
From commercial hospitality suppliers rather than consumer retailers, usually on contract and in bulk, with specifications written around fill weight and laundering durability rather than around a retail firmness label. Some chains sell their own bedding direct to guests, which is why you occasionally see a hotel brand shop online.
Pillowcases and protectors are changed between every guest. The pillows themselves are washed on a rotation, typically a few times a year, and replaced when they lose loft, which for a heavily used hotel pillow can be as often as annually. The protector is what makes that schedule workable.
Not reliably. They are built to suit an unknown guest, which usually means a medium-soft pillow that is too low for side sleepers and too high for stomach sleepers. If you have ongoing neck pain, choose loft based on your own sleeping position rather than copying a hotel, and see our guide to the best pillow for neck pain.
Pillows are one of the few things in a bedroom you can evaluate honestly in five minutes. Bring the way you actually sleep, not the way you think you should, and try two or three. If the bigger problem turns out to be the mattress, take our sleep quiz or come lie on a few pressure-relieving mattresses at one of our five Los Angeles showrooms. Same-day delivery covers most of the city, and every mattress comes with a free 120-night comfort guarantee.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
