Purple uses a breathable gel grid, Puffy uses classic memory foam, and they feel nothing alike. Here is which one suits your sleep position, temperature and budget.

Both brands are online-first, heavily advertised, and promise pressure relief, which is why they get compared constantly. What most shoppers do not realise until they lie down is that they feel almost nothing alike. Purple is built around a flexible gel grid that collapses under your hips and stays firm under your back. Puffy is conventional memory foam, the slow-sinking, body-hugging kind. Choosing between them is less about which is better and more about which of those two sensations you want under you for the next eight years.
Pick Purple if you sleep hot, shift positions during the night, or dislike the feeling of sinking into a mattress. The grid breathes unusually well and springs back immediately, which suits back sleepers, combination sleepers and anyone who has tried memory foam and felt stuck in it.
Pick Puffy if you are a side sleeper who wants deep shoulder and hip relief, or if you simply like the classic memory foam hug. It is the softer, quieter, more conforming of the two, and it is usually the easier mattress to fall asleep on if you already know you like foam.

| Construction | All-foam memory foam builds, with hybrid versions in the upper lineup | Buckling-column gel grid over foam, with pocketed-coil hybrid versions |
| Feel and firmness range | Plush to medium, slow-responding, noticeable body hug | Medium to medium-firm, fast-responding, soft at the pressure points and firm under the lumbar |

| Motion isolation | Excellent, which is what memory foam does best | Very good, though the grid transmits a little more bounce than foam |

The grid deserves credit for being genuinely unusual. It is a sheet of flexible polymer moulded into open columns. Press it lightly and it holds you up. Press it harder, as your hip does, and the columns buckle sideways and let that area drop while the surrounding columns keep supporting you. The result is a mattress that feels firm and soft at once depending on where your weight lands, which is hard to achieve with foam alone.
What it does well: temperature is the standout. Air moves straight through the grid instead of being trapped in a solid slab, so it does not build up the heat that memory foam is known for. It also responds instantly, so rolling over does not involve climbing out of a dent. Pressure relief on the shoulders and hips is strong without the sinking sensation.
Where it falls short: the feel is polarising. Some people describe it as sleeping on a firm, slightly springy surface and never warm to it. The grid also has a faint squish that reads as odd for the first week or two. The all-grid models are heavy, which matters if you move often or need to rotate the mattress alone, and the softer perimeter means sitting on the edge to put on shoes is less stable than on a coil bed.
Puffy is a more familiar proposition. It is memory foam done in the plush direction, with a comfort layer that softens as it warms to your body and a firmer support core underneath. If you have ever liked a memory foam bed, you will recognise the feeling within about thirty seconds.
What it does well: pressure relief for side sleepers is its strongest card. The shoulder sinks in far enough that the spine stays straight rather than being pushed up at the neck. Motion isolation is close to the best you can buy, so a partner getting up at 5am is barely noticeable. It is also quiet, since there are no coils to creak.
Where it falls short: heat. Gel infusion and a breathable cover help, but a thick memory foam comfort layer wraps around you, and wrapping reduces airflow. In a warm Los Angeles bedroom without air conditioning, that is a real consideration. Combination sleepers sometimes find the slow response frustrating, and heavier sleepers may bottom out on the softer models and want a hybrid instead.
Lean Puffy. You need the shoulder to drop, and deep-contouring memory foam does that more readily than a grid. Purple can work for side sleeping, particularly the thicker grid models, but the contour is shallower by design.
Lean Purple, clearly. The open grid is the single most effective passive cooling feature in either bed. If you are set on foam, at least add a breathable cover and a ventilated topper, and look at our guide to the best mattress toppers for hot sleepers.
Both perform well, so this probably is not your deciding factor. Puffy has the edge on absorbing movement. Purple has the edge if one of you runs hot and the other does not.
This depends on which way your back complains. If you wake stiff and want more lift under the lumbar, Purple tends to suit better. If you wake with sore hips and shoulders and want cushioning, Puffy tends to suit better. Neither replaces advice from your own clinician, and firmness preference is individual enough that trying the feel in person is worth an afternoon.
Watch the model, not the brand. Both lineups run from an entry bed to a considerably more expensive flagship, and the cheapest version of either is a very different mattress from the top one. Compare like for like rather than assuming a headline discount applies to the model you tried.
LA Mattress Store does not carry Puffy or Purple, and we would rather say that plainly than talk around it. We do carry several beds that land in the same places, and the advantage is that you can lie on them for ten minutes before deciding rather than gambling on a box arriving at your door.
For a second read on the category, our Casper vs Purple comparison sets the grid against a traditional foam build, and our Purple review and alternatives guide goes deeper on the grid.
For side sleepers and people who like memory foam, yes. It delivers the deep contouring and near-silent motion isolation that foam is good at. It is a weaker choice if you sleep hot, change position often during the night, or are heavy enough to compress a soft comfort layer down to the support core.
They are, for the right sleeper. The gel grid genuinely solves the heat problem that plagues foam, and it supports the lower back while still relieving pressure at the hips. The caveat is that the feel divides people, so it is worth trying before committing rather than relying on reviews.
Expect a lifespan in line with other quality mattresses, roughly seven to ten years with reasonable care. The polymer grid itself is durable and resists the permanent body impressions that soft foam develops, though the foam layers beneath it age at a normal rate. Using a proper foundation and rotating the mattress helps either brand last.
The signature layer is a hyper-elastic polymer moulded into an open grid of columns, sitting above polyurethane foam support layers. Hybrid models in the range place that grid over a pocketed coil unit instead of an all-foam core, which adds bounce and firms up the edges.
Puffy sells primarily through its own website and ships compressed in a box, so most buyers order without ever lying on one. If you want to feel a comparable memory foam bed before you commit, our five Los Angeles showrooms carry Tempur-Pedic and Stearns and Foster models with a similar contouring feel.
Reading about a grid versus a hug only gets you so far. Ten minutes flat on your back, then on your side, tells you more than any comparison article, including this one. Take our sleep quiz for a firmness starting point, or visit any of our five LA showrooms and try the beds we have described here. Same-day delivery is available across most of Los Angeles, and our free 120-night comfort guarantee means the decision is not final the moment the truck pulls away.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
