A mattress topper can fix a bed that is too firm, too soft or too hot, but only if you pick the right material, thickness and density. Here is how to choose.

A topper is the cheapest way to change how your bed feels, and the easiest thing to get wrong. Most disappointing purchases come down to the same two mistakes: buying the wrong material for the problem, or buying a topper at all when the mattress underneath was the real issue. Work through the questions below in order and you will avoid both.
Before you look at a single listing, name what is actually wrong with your bed. The answer determines almost everything else.
Each material has a personality. There is no best one, only the one that matches the problem you named above.
The softest-feeling option and the best at relieving pressure. It contours slowly to your shape, which side sleepers usually love and combination sleepers often find sticky. Standard memory foam traps heat; gel-infused, open-cell and ventilated versions run cooler but none of them beat latex for airflow. Choose this if the bed is too firm and you like a hug.
Springy rather than sinking, naturally breathable, and by far the most durable material in the category. Latex cushions without swallowing you, which suits back sleepers, stomach sleepers and anyone who moves around at night. It is the most expensive option per inch and noticeably heavy, but a good one outlasts two or three foam toppers.
Thin, regulating and quietly excellent in a warm climate. Wool moves moisture away from your skin and moderates temperature in both directions, so it takes the edge off a hot bed without adding much softness. It adds comfort rather than transforming firmness. In Los Angeles, where the problem is usually heat rather than cold, this is an underrated choice.
A featherbed adds a plush, luxurious layer with almost no support. It feels wonderful for the first ten minutes and flattens under your hips by morning unless you fluff it regularly. Best for adding a soft surface to a bed that is already supportive, not for fixing firmness.
The cheapest category, and it shows. These compress within a few months and rarely last a year of nightly use. Reasonable for a guest room that sees use six nights a year, a poor investment for your own bed.
Thickness determines how much the feel actually changes, and thicker is not automatically better.
If your goal is the opposite, firming up a bed that has gone soft, thinner is better. Two inches of firm latex does more than four inches of anything plush. Our guide on making a mattress firmer covers the other levers, including the foundation underneath.
Density is what separates a topper that holds up from one that leaves a permanent dent by spring. With memory foam, higher density means better support and longer life at the cost of more heat and more weight. Low-density foam feels nice in the shop and collapses at the hip within months.
Three practical details catch people out. First, measure your mattress depth and add the topper thickness, then check that your fitted sheets have enough pocket depth to cover the total. Deep-pocket sheets are usually necessary once you add three inches. Second, confirm the size matches: a California king topper is not a king topper, and the difference is four inches in each direction. Third, decide how it will stay put, since a foam topper on a slippery mattress protector migrates all night. Elastic corner straps or an anchoring band solve it, and our guide on keeping a topper from sliding covers the rest.
Also plan for the first few days. Foam toppers arrive compressed and need 24 to 48 hours flat to reach full loft, and most have a mild new-foam smell that airs out in a well-ventilated room over the same period.
A topper changes the surface. It cannot rebuild support. If your mattress has a visible dip, if you can feel coils, if it is past roughly eight years, or if you already sleep better in a hotel than at home, a topper will mask the symptom for a few months and then the sag will come back through. Spending a few hundred dollars to postpone a decision you will make anyway is the most common mistake in this category. Our guide to what a mattress topper is spells out where that line sits.
It sits on top of your mattress, under the fitted sheet, and changes the feel of the sleeping surface. Depending on the material it can soften a firm bed, add a little firmness to a soft one, improve pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, or make the surface sleep cooler. It does not add structural support to the mattress beneath it.
Thickness and purpose. A pad is thin, usually quilted, and mainly protects the mattress while adding a small amount of cushioning. A topper is two inches or more and is bought specifically to change how the bed feels. A protector is thinner still, often waterproof, and changes nothing about comfort.
Sometimes, and it depends on the cause. If your mattress is too firm and you wake with pressure-point soreness, a cushioning topper often helps. If your mattress sags and your spine is dropping out of alignment, a topper will not correct that and may make it worse. Our guide to the best mattress toppers for back pain goes through both cases, and persistent pain is worth discussing with a clinician.
Latex commonly lasts eight years or more. Good high-density memory foam typically runs three to five years. Down and fiberfill are the shortest lived, often a year or two before they flatten. Rotating the topper end to end every few months evens out the wear on any of them.
Three inches of medium-density memory foam or a plush natural latex. Side sleeping concentrates body weight on the shoulder and hip, so you want enough give for those to sink in while the waist stays supported. Thinner than two inches usually will not do enough, and very soft low-density foam bottoms out at exactly the spots you were trying to cushion.
That is the question worth answering first, and it takes about two minutes in person. Bring a photo of your mattress law label to any of our five LA showrooms and we will tell you honestly whether a topper will solve it.
