A fitted sheet that lets go overnight is almost never a quality problem. Work through pocket depth, elastic, grip and technique in order to fix it for good.

A fitted sheet that lets go at 3am is one of the more aggravating small problems in a bedroom. You wake up on bare mattress with a wad of fabric under your hip. The usual response is to buy another set, which often fails the same way, because the real cause is almost never the quality of the sheet. It is a mismatch between the sheet and the mattress, or elastic that has quietly given up.
Work through these in order. The first two solve most cases.
Every fitted sheet has a pocket depth, meaning how far down the mattress sides it is built to reach. Mattresses have grown much taller over the past two decades, and a lot of sheets on the market are still cut for a 10 inch bed.
Measure from the top surface of your mattress straight down to the bottom seam. Then add the height of anything sitting on top of it, because a topper or a thick protector effectively makes the mattress taller. Match the total:
If your mattress is 14 inches tall and your sheet is cut for 12, the elastic is stretched to its limit all night and the corner will slip off the moment you shift your weight. No gadget fixes that reliably. The right sheet does. Our guide to choosing sheets covers pocket depth alongside fiber and weave.
Elastic perishes. Heat is what kills it, which means hot washes and especially hot dryer cycles. After a couple of years of weekly laundering, the band around a fitted sheet can lose much of its recovery.
Pull a corner out and let it go. Healthy elastic snaps back briskly. Tired elastic returns slowly or stays stretched. If it is dead, you have two options: replace the set, or have the elastic replaced, which is straightforward if you sew and the fabric itself is still good.
To make the next set last, wash warm rather than hot and either line dry or tumble on low. The elastic will outlive the fabric if you treat it gently.
If the depth is right and the elastic is sound but the sheet still travels, hold it down directly. In rough order of how well they work:
Safety pins work in an emergency but tear fabric and find skin. Treat them as a last resort.
Technique matters more than people expect. Fit the two corners on one side first and pull the sheet firmly across the mattress before doing the opposite corners, so the tension is distributed rather than loaded onto whichever corner you did last. Most fitted sheets have a longer side and a shorter side; getting the orientation backwards leaves one pair of corners straining and is a very common cause of overnight failure. Look for the care label, which usually sits on a short side.
If you tuck a flat sheet, hospital corners over the top add a second layer of restraint and keep the whole bed tidier.
Sometimes the sheet is innocent. A mattress topper that slides will drag the sheet with it, so if your topper moves, fix that first; we cover the fixes in our guide to keeping a topper from sliding. An adjustable base is its own case, because the mattress flexes every time you raise the head, and sheets that behave perfectly on a flat bed will work loose on one that moves. If that is your situation, see keeping sheets on an adjustable bed.
Worth noting too: a mattress that has developed a sag changes shape under load, which stretches the sheet unevenly and pops the corner nearest the dip. If one specific corner keeps failing, press down on the mattress around it and see whether the surface is still even.
It sounds obvious, but sheet sizing trips people up constantly, especially with twin versus twin XL and king versus California king. A sheet that is close but not correct will seem to fit when you make the bed and let go overnight.
The bottom sheet, sewn with elasticated corners so it stretches over the mattress and stays in place. The flat sheet is the loose one that goes between you and the blanket. A fitted sheet is sized by both mattress footprint and pocket depth, which is why two queen sheets can fit very differently.
Not well. A twin mattress is about 38 by 75 inches and a twin XL is about 38 by 80 inches. The widths match, so a twin fitted sheet will seem to go on, but it is five inches short lengthwise and the corners at the head or foot will pull off during the night. Buy twin XL sheets for a twin XL bed.
No. A standard king is about 76 by 80 inches and a California king is about 72 by 84 inches, so a California king is narrower and longer. A king fitted sheet is too wide and too short, which leaves it loose at the sides and straining at the corners. We go through the measurements in detail in will king sheets fit a California king.
Turn two corners inside out over your hands, nest the remaining corners into them so all four sit together, then flatten the curved elastic edge into a straight line and fold as normal. Our step-by-step guide walks through it.
Usually one of three things: the sheet is on the wrong way round so that corner takes most of the tension, the elastic has failed in that section, or the mattress has started to sag nearby and changes shape under your weight. Check the orientation first, since it costs nothing.
If you have matched the pocket depth, replaced the elastic and added straps, and a corner still lets go in the same place every night, the mattress has likely lost its shape. That is a support problem, not a bedding problem, and no sheet will cover for it.
