Fiber first, weave second, fit third, thread count last. A practical order of operations for buying sheets that actually breathe, last and stay on the mattress.

Most people buy sheets the way they buy paper towels: grab a set, hope it works. Then the sheets sleep hot, or pill after four washes, or will not stay on the mattress. Choosing well is not complicated, but it does mean ignoring the number printed largest on the package. Here is the order that actually matters: fiber first, weave second, fit third, thread count last.
The fiber decides how the sheets breathe, how they age and how they feel against skin. Everything else is a modifier.
The default for good reason. It breathes well, washes easily and gets softer with use. The variable is staple length, meaning the length of the individual cotton fibers. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cottons, sold under names like Supima and Egyptian, produce smoother, stronger yarn that pills less. Short-staple cotton is cheaper and wears out faster. If a label says only "100% cotton" with no further detail, assume short-staple.
Made from flax, linen is the most breathable common sheeting fiber and the best choice for people who sleep hot or live somewhere warm. It feels crisp and slightly textured rather than silky, it wrinkles permanently and unapologetically, and it is expensive up front. It also lasts longer than cotton and softens for years. In Los Angeles, where bedrooms stay warm well into October, linen earns its price more often than it does in colder climates.
Both are manufactured fibers made from plant cellulose. They drape softly, feel cool to first touch and handle moisture well, which makes them popular with night sweaters. The trade-off is durability: viscose fibers are weaker when wet, so these sheets need gentler washing and tend not to last as long as good cotton. Look for lyocell processing, which is the more durable and less chemically intensive method.
Cheap, wrinkle-resistant and widely sold. They also trap heat, because polyester does not breathe, and they hold body oils in a way that gets harder to wash out over time. Reasonable for a guest room or a kid who spills things. Not a good choice for a hot sleeper or a primary bed.
Weave is how the yarns cross, and it changes the feel of an identical fiber completely. There are two that matter.
Percale is a simple one-over-one-under weave. It feels crisp, matte and cool, like a well-kept hotel bed, and it breathes better than sateen. It also wrinkles more and can feel stiff for the first several washes.
Sateen floats more yarn on the surface, which produces a smooth, slightly lustrous, warmer-feeling fabric. It drapes better and resists wrinkles, but those exposed surface yarns are easier to snag and it sleeps warmer than percale.
If you run hot, choose percale. If you like a silky hand and do not overheat, choose sateen. Our full percale versus sateen breakdown goes deeper, and if you are weighing natural fibers against each other, linen versus cotton covers that choice.
This is where most sheet purchases actually fail. A sheet set is sized to the mattress width and length, but the fitted sheet also has a pocket depth, which is how far down the sides it reaches. Mattresses have gotten considerably thicker over the past twenty years, and plenty of sheets have not kept up.
Measure your mattress from the top surface to the bottom seam before you buy, and add any topper or protector you use, because those add height too. Then match:
Buying a pocket that is too shallow means corners that pop off every night. Buying one far too deep means loose, bunching fabric. Either way you lose. If you use a mattress topper, measure with it in place.
Thread count is the number of yarns per square inch, and past a certain point it stops predicting quality. A well-made percale in the 200 to 400 range will outperform a 1,000-count sheet made from short-staple cotton with multi-ply yarns padding the number. Manufacturers learned long ago that the figure sells, so inflated counts are common. Treat anything above about 600 as a marketing decision rather than a quality signal, and judge the fiber instead. We cover the arithmetic behind this in our guide to what a good thread count really is.
There is no single best set, because the right answer depends on how warm you sleep. For most people the safest high-quality choice is long-staple cotton in a percale weave: breathable, durable and pleasant year round. Hot sleepers usually do better in linen. If you want the specifics on premium cotton, see our guide to Egyptian cotton sheets.
It counts the horizontal and vertical yarns in one square inch of fabric. Higher is not automatically better. Beyond roughly 600, counts are usually reached by twisting multiple thin plies together and counting each ply, which produces a denser, warmer, weaker sheet rather than a finer one.
Fitted sheets with taller side panels, generally built to fit mattresses 13 to 17 inches deep. Most pillow-top and hybrid mattresses sold today fall in that range, which is why standard-pocket sheets slip off them.
No. A full mattress is about 54 by 75 inches and a queen is about 60 by 80 inches, so a full fitted sheet is both too narrow and too short to reach the corners. A full flat sheet can work as a lightweight top layer on a queen in a pinch, but it will not tuck in properly.
A queen fitted sheet is cut to fit a 60 by 80 inch mattress, with pocket depth varying by set. A queen flat sheet typically runs around 90 by 102 inches so it can drape and tuck on both sides.
Once a week is the general guideline, stretching to every two weeks if you shower before bed and do not sleep hot. If you sweat at night, share the bed with a pet or have allergies, weekly is the floor. Our realistic washing schedule has the full breakdown.
Sheets sit between you and your mattress, and they can only do so much. If you are waking up hot or sore and new sheets have not fixed it, the mattress underneath is usually the real variable.
