Foam toppers take a permanent set if you store them wrong. Here is how to clean, roll, bag and shelve a mattress topper so it comes back out flat, and what to avoid in an LA garage.

A mattress topper is mostly air held in place by foam. That is what makes it comfortable, and it is also why storage goes wrong so easily. Fold a foam topper, put something heavy on it and leave it for six months, and the crease does not come out. Seal a slightly damp one in plastic and you open a bag that smells like a basement.
Most people store a topper for one of three reasons: they swap to a cooler setup for the summer, they are moving, or a guest room topper only gets used a few weeks a year. In all three cases the method is the same, and the whole job takes twenty minutes.
This is the step that decides whether the topper survives. Body oils and sweat that go into storage do not stay neutral. They oxidize, and over months they turn into yellowing and a smell that never fully lifts.
Spot clean any marks, vacuum both sides with an upholstery attachment, and then let it air out flat for a full day before it goes anywhere. Foam holds moisture deep inside where the surface feels dry to the touch, so give it longer than seems necessary. Our guide to cleaning a mattress topper covers the specifics for foam, latex and fiberfill.
Do not air it out in direct sun. UV breaks foam down and yellows it, and an LA afternoon on a patio will do visible damage in a few hours. Indoors near an open window, or outside in full shade, is the right call.
Folding creates a sharp crease along a single line, and foam that sits creased under its own weight for months takes a permanent set. Rolling distributes the bend across the whole length.
Latex toppers are heavier and less forgiving than memory foam. Roll a latex topper with a sheet or a cotton cover rolled in alongside it so the surfaces are not compressed directly against each other.
The instinct is to seal a topper in plastic or vacuum bag it for space. Both are mistakes for long term storage.
Vacuum compression is fine for a few days in transit, which is how toppers ship in the first place. Left compressed for months, foam loses loft it does not fully recover, and memory foam is the worst offender. A topper that comes out of a vacuum bag a year later is measurably thinner than it went in.
Sealed plastic traps whatever moisture is left in the foam with nowhere to go. In a warm garage, that is how mildew starts.
Use a breathable storage bag, a large cotton laundry bag, or a clean old duvet cover tied at the end. You want dust kept off and air moving through. If you only have a plastic bag, leave the end open rather than sealing it.
Store it flat if you possibly can. A closet shelf, under a bed, or on top of a wardrobe all work. Flat storage keeps the weight distributed and nothing takes a set.
If it must stand upright, prop it fully against a wall rather than leaning it at an angle, and check on it every few weeks. A rolled topper standing on one end for months settles under its own weight and the bottom of the roll compresses.
Three things to keep it away from:
Unroll it and lay it flat on a bed for at least 24 hours before you sleep on it. Foam that has been rolled needs time and a little warmth to return to full loft, and a memory foam topper stored somewhere cool will feel noticeably firm until it comes up to room temperature.
If there is a faint storage smell, leave it uncovered in a ventilated room for a day or two. It usually clears. If it still smells after that, or if the topper stays visibly compressed in places after several days flat, the foam has taken a set and it is not coming back. Our guide to how long a mattress topper lasts covers when replacing beats rescuing.
Clean it, let it dry flat for a full day, roll it loosely from one short end, secure it with wide fabric straps, and slide it into a breathable bag. Store it flat in a cool interior space with nothing stacked on top. Avoid folding, avoid sealed plastic, and avoid garages and attics.
The same way, with two extra cautions. Memory foam is the most heat sensitive common topper material, so an interior closet matters more than it does for fiberfill. It is also the material that loses the most loft under long compression, so never leave it vacuum sealed for more than a few days.
For a short move, yes. For seasonal or long term storage, no. Toppers ship compressed because the compression lasts days, not months. Foam left compressed for an extended period does not fully recover its original thickness, and you lose the cushioning you bought the topper for.
Treat it like off-season bedding rather than like garage equipment. Clean it, roll it, bag it breathably, and give it a flat spot indoors. A topper used only for guests a few weeks a year lasts far longer stored in a bedroom closet than on a shelf in the garage.
For a thin fiberfill or wool topper, folding is fine. For anything foam or latex, roll it. Folded foam creases along a single line and, left under its own weight for months, holds that crease permanently. You will feel the ridge through the sheet when it goes back on the bed.
Stored correctly, flat, cool, dry and breathable, a good topper handles a year or more without meaningful change. The limiting factor is almost never time on its own. It is heat, moisture and compression, and any one of those can do damage in a single summer.
Worth asking before you go to the trouble: a topper that is already flattened, yellowed or lumpy is not going to improve in a closet. And if you are using a topper mainly to compensate for a mattress that has gone soft in the middle, storing the topper is treating the symptom.
