A throw blanket is a small decorative blanket, usually around 50 by 60 inches. Here is how throws differ from bed blankets, what sizes to buy, and how to style one on a bed or sofa.

A throw blanket is a small, lightweight blanket meant for one person, used over the lap or shoulders rather than spread across a bed. Most measure roughly 50 by 60 inches, which is deliberately too small to cover a mattress and exactly right for draping over a sofa arm or the foot of a bed.
That size difference is the whole point, and it is where most of the confusion comes from. People buy a throw expecting it to work as a bed blanket, discover it covers about two thirds of a full-size mattress, and conclude they bought the wrong thing. They did not. A throw is a different product with a different job.
The standard is 50 by 60 inches. That is the size you will find most often, and it is what a retailer means when a listing just says "throw" with no other qualifier.
There is more variation than in bed linen sizing, though, because throws are decorative items rather than fitted ones. Common ranges you will encounter:
For comparison, a twin blanket is around 66 by 90 inches and a queen is around 90 by 90. Even an oversized throw is much smaller than the smallest bed blanket. Our quilt sizes guide has the full chart if you are shopping for something that needs to cover a mattress.
These three get used interchangeably in conversation and they should not be.
A throw is sized for a person, not a bed. It is usually a single layer of woven or knitted fabric, often with fringe or a decorative edge, and it is designed to be seen. You keep it on the sofa or at the foot of the bed and pull it over yourself when you want it.
A bed blanket is sized to the mattress and hangs over the sides. It goes under the comforter as a layer you can add or remove as the night changes temperature. It is functional first.
A comforter is a filled, quilted bedcover, thick enough to be the top layer on its own. Our explainer on duvets versus comforters covers where duvets fit into this.
The practical version: if it needs to tuck in or hang over the edge, it is not a throw.
Three jobs, roughly in order of how people use them.
Personal warmth without changing the room. A throw lets one person on the sofa be warmer than everyone else. In Los Angeles this matters more than you would think: daytime highs in the eighties and evenings that drop twenty degrees mean a full blanket is overkill most of the year, but bare arms after sunset are not comfortable either.
Adjustable warmth on the bed. Folded across the foot of the bed, a throw is the easiest way to add a bit of warmth to your feet or lower legs without committing to a heavier comforter. For anyone who runs hot but has cold feet, which is an extremely common combination, this solves a real problem. Our guide to cooling blankets covers the opposite case.
Visual layering. A bed made with only a flat comforter reads as unfinished. A folded throw adds a horizontal band of color and texture across the bottom third, which is why every hotel room and furniture catalog has one. It is a styling device as much as a warmth device.
Material matters more on a throw than on a blanket buried in the bedding stack, because you feel it against bare skin and you look at it every day.
One practical tip: buy for how it will be washed. A throw on a sofa where a dog sleeps needs to survive a weekly cycle. A throw that lives folded on a guest bed does not.
Fold the throw lengthwise into thirds and lay it across the bed about a third of the way up from the foot, letting a few inches hang over each side. This is the standard hotel look and it works because the horizontal band breaks up a large flat expanse of bedding.
For something less formal, drape it diagonally across one corner with a soft fold. On a king bed a single standard throw can look undersized, so either use an oversized throw or place two smaller ones at the foot corners. Our guide to layering a bed covers where the throw sits in the full stack.
The most reliable approach is to drape it over one arm with roughly a third of the length hanging down the front and the rest falling behind. Avoid centering it, which looks staged.
A looser option: fold it in half, then drape it over the back corner of the sofa so one edge falls naturally toward the seat. Give it a light shake rather than smoothing it flat, since a throw that looks arranged to the inch reads as furniture showroom rather than living room.
The standard is 50 by 60 inches. Smaller accent throws run around 40 by 50 inches, and oversized throws go up to about 60 by 80 inches. There is no strict industry standard the way there is for sheets, so always check the listed dimensions rather than assuming.
Considerably smaller. A twin blanket is roughly 66 by 90 inches, so it is both wider and a full two and a half feet longer than a standard throw. A throw will not cover a twin mattress with any overhang, which is why it works as a decorative layer rather than a bed covering.
A standard 50 by 60 inch throw looks small at the foot of a king. Use an oversized throw of around 60 by 80 inches laid across the width, or place two standard throws folded at the two foot corners. If you want a throw that genuinely covers a king bed, you are looking for a coverlet or a blanket instead.
Three things: personal warmth for one person on a sofa or chair, an adjustable extra layer at the foot of a bed, and visual texture in a room. The size is chosen for a seated adult, not for a mattress, which is what separates a throw from every other blanket in the house.
Drape it over one arm with about a third of the length falling down the front and the rest behind, or fold it in half and lay it over a back corner so an edge drops toward the seat. Do not center it or smooth it perfectly flat. A little irregularity is what makes it look used rather than staged.
Not really, for one person on a full or larger bed. It will not reach the sides and will slide off during the night. It works fine on a crib-adjacent setup or over a child in a chair, and it works perfectly as a supplementary layer over the feet. For actual bed warmth, buy a blanket sized to the mattress.
A throw is a finishing touch. If you are cold at night, or waking up too warm, the mattress and the main bedding layers are doing far more of the work, and no amount of styling at the foot of the bed will fix a bed that sleeps hot. Take our sleep quiz if the temperature of your bed is the real issue, or browse mattress toppers and protectors for the layer that sits closest to you.
