Cat urine contains uric acid that water and soap cannot dissolve, which is why ordinary cleaning fails. Here is the enzyme-based method that actually removes the stain and the smell.

Cat urine is not the same problem as human urine, and treating it the same way is why most people end up with a mattress that smells fine for a week and then smells again. The difference is uric acid. Cats excrete a high concentration of it, and uric acid crystals do not dissolve in water or ordinary soap. You can wash away the yellow stain completely and leave every crystal behind, waiting for the next humid afternoon to reactivate.
That is why the cat-specific method matters. Here is what actually works, in order, and what to skip.
Do not reach for a steam cleaner. Heat sets protein stains and bakes the odor into the foam. This is the single most common mistake with cat urine, and it is close to irreversible.
If the accident is fresh, press a folded towel straight down onto the spot and hold it. Add weight if you can. Lift, refold to a dry section, and repeat until the towel comes up barely damp. Rubbing spreads the urine sideways into clean foam and works it deeper, which is the opposite of what you want.
If the stain is already dry, skip to step two. You cannot blot out what has already soaked in.
Lightly mist the area with cold water, then blot again. This dilutes what is sitting near the surface and gives the enzyme cleaner a cleaner field to work in. Keep the mattress damp, never wet. Soaking a mattress creates a mold problem that is worse than the smell you started with.
This is the step that does the real work. Enzyme cleaners contain bacteria that consume uric acid and break it down into odorless compounds. Nothing else on your shelf does this. Vinegar neutralizes ammonia but leaves the uric acid, which is why vinegar seems to work and then does not.
Apply generously. The urine travelled down into the mattress, so the cleaner has to travel down too. A light surface spritz will not reach it. Follow the product's directions for dwell time, which is usually ten to fifteen minutes and sometimes several hours. Do not blot it dry early. The enzymes need to stay wet to keep working.
After the dwell time, blot up the excess with a dry towel.
Cover the damp area in a thick layer of baking soda. Not a dusting, a layer you can see. Leave it for at least eight hours, and overnight is better. The baking soda pulls remaining moisture up out of the foam and absorbs residual odor as it goes.
Then vacuum it all up with the upholstery attachment. Go slowly and make several passes. Dried baking soda hides in quilting seams.
Any moisture left in the mattress is a mold risk. Stand the mattress on its side if you can, open a window, and point a fan at the treated area for several hours. In Los Angeles this is easy most of the year; our dry air is one of the few things working in your favor here. Do not put sheets back on until the spot is dry to the touch and smells of nothing.
Put your face close to the spot once it is fully dry. If you catch any ammonia at all, run the enzyme step again. Deep or repeat accidents often need two or three treatments. That is normal, not a sign the method failed.
Cats urinating outside the litter box are usually telling you something. The common causes are a urinary tract problem, a litter box that is dirty, in a high-traffic spot, or shared with too many cats, a change in the household, or territorial stress from another animal. A cat that suddenly starts peeing on the bed, where your scent is strongest, is often anxious rather than spiteful. If it happens more than once, a vet visit should come before any more mattress cleaning.
Once a mattress has absorbed urine deep into the foam, you are managing the problem rather than solving it. A waterproof mattress protector prevents the next accident from ever reaching the mattress, and it washes in a machine. If you have a cat and a mattress you care about, this is the cheapest insurance available. Our guide to mattress protectors versus mattress pads explains which type actually blocks liquid, and you can browse protectors alongside our mattress toppers.
If the odor persists after several enzyme treatments, or the urine reached the core of a foam mattress, replacement is often the honest answer. Foam holds odor in a way that fabric does not. Our guide on how long mattresses last covers the other signs worth weighing before you spend more time on a mattress near the end of its life.
An enzyme cleaner is the only reliable answer, because the smell comes from uric acid crystals that water and soap cannot dissolve. Apply it generously, let it dwell, then draw out the remaining moisture with a thick layer of baking soda overnight. Masking sprays cover the smell for a few days and then it returns.
Dried urine needs rehydrating before it can be lifted. Mist the area with cold water first, then go straight to the enzyme cleaner and give it a long dwell time. Dried stains almost always need at least two treatments, sometimes three.
Usually, if you catch it within a day or two and use an enzyme cleaner properly. Old, repeated accidents that soaked into memory foam are much harder, because foam is absorbent all the way through. At that point the realistic choice is between living with it and replacing the mattress.
Partly. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell and can help as a first pass, but it does nothing to the uric acid crystals underneath. That is why vinegar-only cleaning seems to work and then the smell comes back on a humid day. Use it before the enzyme cleaner if you like, not instead of it.
Plan on at least a full day. The enzyme dwell time plus an overnight baking soda treatment plus several hours of drying puts you at roughly 24 hours before you can judge the result honestly. Judging it while the mattress is still damp will mislead you in both directions.
If you have treated the spot more than twice and the smell is still there, the mattress has absorbed more than it can give back.
