Most soundproofing advice online does not work. Here is what actually blocks noise in a bedroom, from renter-friendly fixes to real construction, plus the noise sources coming from inside the bed.

Most bedroom soundproofing advice is wrong, and it is wrong in a specific way: it confuses absorbing sound with blocking it. Foam panels, tapestries and egg carton material absorb reflections inside a room, which changes how the room sounds. They do almost nothing to stop noise from getting in. If you have taped acoustic foam to a wall and the neighbor's television is still audible, that is why.
Blocking sound takes one of three things: mass, an air seal, or decoupling. Everything below is organised by how much of those three you get per dollar.
Sound behaves like water. It follows the easiest path, and one small gap will undo an otherwise solid wall. Before you buy anything, do this: stand in the quiet bedroom at night and slowly move along each wall, the door and the window, listening for where the noise gets louder. In most homes the answer is the door, then the window, then a vent or an outlet, and only then the wall itself.
This matters because the fixes are completely different. Treating a wall when the leak is a door gap wastes both money and effort.
The single highest-value fix in most bedrooms. A standard interior door has roughly half an inch of open air underneath it, and sound pours through it. A door sweep or a draft stopper closes that gap and often makes a bigger difference than anything else on this list. Add adhesive weatherstripping foam around the door frame while you are at it, so the door closes against a seal rather than into an open rabbet.
Interior doors are usually hollow. There is a cardboard honeycomb inside and nothing else, which is why they block so little. You cannot fill one without replacing it, but you can hang a heavy moving blanket or a thick quilted curtain over the door, which adds mass exactly where you need it. It is not attractive. It works.
Electrical boxes on a shared wall are holes cut through the drywall. Foam outlet gaskets (a dollar or two each, and they sit behind the faceplate) close them. A shared HVAC duct between rooms is harder, but a duct liner or a simple baffle helps.
Here is the honest version: a thick rug with a dense pad meaningfully reduces impact noise transmitted through the floor, so it helps if the problem is footsteps from below or your own floor creaking. It does very little against airborne noise coming through a wall. Put it in if you have hard floors, but do not expect it to solve a noisy-neighbor problem.
Windows are the weakest part of most exterior walls, and in Los Angeles that means traffic on a boulevard, leaf blowers at 7 a.m. and the occasional helicopter. Thick, floor-length, wide-hung curtains add mass over the glass and, if they extend well past the frame on all sides, trap a layer of air behind them. Look for genuinely heavy fabric with a dense backing rather than anything sold purely as blackout, since the two are not the same thing.
An acrylic or glass panel that seals into the window opening from inside, creating a second air gap. These are the most effective renter-friendly window fix by a wide margin, and they are removable. They are also not cheap, but for a bedroom facing a busy street they change the room.
A full, deep bookshelf pressed against a party wall is mass, and mass is what blocks sound. Books are dense and irregularly shaped, which helps. It is a real fix disguised as furniture.
A second sheet of drywall over the existing wall, ideally with a damping compound between the layers, adds mass and converts sound energy to heat. This is the standard professional approach and it is effective. It also means patching, taping and repainting.
Resilient channel or sound isolation clips separate the new drywall from the studs so vibration cannot travel straight through the framing. Decoupling outperforms mass alone for low-frequency noise like bass and truck engines, and it is the only thing that really addresses those.
A solid core door plus a full perimeter seal and a threshold sweep is a dramatic improvement over a hollow door, and it is one of the more cost-effective construction fixes because you are replacing the weakest element.
Plenty of the noise that wakes people up originates inside the room, and no amount of wall treatment will help.

A partner who moves. If you are woken by movement rather than sound, the mattress is the variable. All-foam construction isolates motion far better than a traditional innerspring, where movement travels across a connected coil unit. Our memory foam mattresses are the usual answer here.
Snoring. Genuinely the most common in-room noise complaint, and the one soundproofing cannot touch. Loud, persistent snoring with pauses in breathing is worth raising with a doctor rather than treating as a furniture problem.
In a rental with single-pane windows on a busy street, there is a ceiling on what you can achieve. At that point masking beats blocking. A fan, an air purifier or a white noise machine raises the noise floor so intermittent sounds do not stand out against silence, which is what actually wakes people. It is not soundproofing, but it is often the intervention that gets someone sleeping through the night.

In order of impact: fit a door sweep to close the floor gap, add adhesive weatherstripping around the frame so the door seals when closed, then add mass to the door itself with a heavy blanket or curtain. If you own the home and the door is hollow core, replacing it with a solid core door and a full perimeter seal is the real fix.
Start at the window, since it is almost always the weakest point in an exterior wall. Seal any gaps in the frame, hang heavy full-length curtains that extend well past the opening, and if the noise is severe, fit an interior window insert to create a second sealed air gap. Treating the wall before the window is a common and expensive mistake.
No, not against noise coming through the wall. A rug on the wall absorbs reflections inside the room, which makes the room sound less echoey but does not block transmission. On the floor, a thick rug with a dense pad does reduce impact noise, so it helps with footsteps and creaking, just not with voices or televisions next door.
Not without building a room within a room, which is what recording studios do and what it costs. What is realistic in a normal bedroom is a substantial reduction, enough that intermittent noise stops crossing your waking threshold. Combine the best blocking you can afford with masking, and that is usually sufficient.
Seal the outlets with foam gaskets, push a full bookshelf against the shared wall, and hang heavy fabric such as moving blankets or quilted curtains. None of this matches a second layer of drywall, but combined they are noticeable and none of it requires a landlord's permission.
