A panel bed has a headboard, footboard and side rails with flat decorative panels. Here is how it supports a mattress, whether it needs a box spring, and how it differs from a platform bed.

A panel bed is the bed frame most people picture when they picture a bed: a headboard, a matching footboard, and two side rails holding it all together. The name comes from the flat decorative panels set into the headboard and footboard, which is what separates it from a slatted, upholstered or spindle design.
Panel beds are the most common style sold in the United States, and they are also the style that generates the most confusion at delivery time, because unlike a platform bed, a panel bed does not always come with the support your mattress needs. Here is what you actually need to know before buying one.
Four parts: a headboard, a footboard, and two side rails that connect them. The headboard and footboard are built from solid panels, often wood or wood-look composite, sometimes with moulding, inlay or a raised frame detail. The footboard is usually lower than the headboard but still tall enough to be a visual feature.
The important part is the middle. The side rails of a panel bed carry the weight, and what sits between them varies enormously by manufacturer. Some panel beds ship with a full set of closely spaced slats and a center support leg. Some ship with three or four widely spaced cross rails meant to hold a box spring. Some ship with metal rails and nothing at all across the middle.
That variation is the single most useful thing to check before you buy, and it is the reason for the next section.
It depends entirely on what is between the rails, and this is where most people get caught out.
If the panel bed has closely spaced slats, generally within about three inches of each other, with a center support running down the length of the bed, your mattress can go straight on. No box spring required. Most modern panel beds sold with a mattress in mind are built this way.
If the panel bed has only a few cross rails, or bare rails with a lip, it was designed to hold a box spring or a foundation, and the foundation is doing the real support work. Putting a mattress directly on widely spaced supports will let it sag between them, and on a foam or hybrid mattress that will void the warranty in most cases.
The practical test: lay a tape measure across the gaps. Anything wider than about three inches needs either a foundation underneath or a bunkie board laid over the slats to close the gaps. Our guides to what a box spring actually does and mattress foundations walk through the difference, and the foundations collection has the low-profile options that work best under a panel bed without pushing the mattress above the footboard.
These get compared constantly, and the distinction is narrower than people assume, because plenty of modern panel beds are effectively platform beds with panels.
A platform bed is defined by its support: a solid or closely slatted surface built to take a mattress directly, no box spring, usually sitting lower to the ground. A panel bed is defined by its appearance: the flat panels in the headboard and footboard. One term describes how it holds the mattress, the other describes how it looks.
In practice the differences that matter to a buyer are these. Panel beds sit higher, which most people find easier to get in and out of, and which leaves usable storage space underneath. Platform beds sit lower, look more contemporary, and never need a foundation. Panel beds have a footboard, which looks finished but costs you a few inches of legroom if you are tall. Platform beds often skip the footboard entirely.
Cost is usually a wash, except that a panel bed requiring a foundation adds that foundation's price to the total. Factor it in when you compare. Our overview of bed frame types covers the rest of the field, and this guide to box springs and platform beds covers the support question in more depth.
Panel beds anchor a room. The tall solid headboard gives a bedroom a focal point in a way that a low platform frame does not, which matters more in a small apartment than in a large master bedroom, because the bed is doing more of the visual work.
They also sit at a comfortable height. A mattress on a panel bed typically lands around 24 to 28 inches off the floor with a foundation, which is close to the height most people find easiest to sit down onto and stand up from. That is a real consideration for older sleepers, anyone with hip or knee issues, and anyone who has ever had to roll off a low platform bed in the morning.
And they hide things. The rails and the space under a panel bed take storage bins comfortably, which in Los Angeles apartments is not a small benefit.
The footboard is the main complaint. If you are over six feet, a footboard on a standard-length frame will make itself known. Look for a California king, which trades four inches of width for four inches of length, or choose a panel bed with a low footboard.
Assembly is the other one. Panel beds have more parts than a platform frame and the rail-to-post connections are where squeaks develop over time. Tighten the hardware once a year and the problem generally does not arise.
Finally, the support ambiguity covered above. A platform bed tells you what it does. A panel bed you have to check.
Almost anything, as long as the support underneath is right. Once you have either close slats or a proper foundation, a panel bed is neutral: it does not change how the mattress feels the way an adjustable base or a sagging box spring does.
Thickness is the thing to think about. A thick pillow-top on top of a tall foundation on a panel bed can leave the mattress sitting above the headboard's lower panel, which looks wrong and lets pillows slide off the back. If you want a thick mattress, pair it with a low-profile foundation. Browse the hybrid mattress collection and check the height before you commit, or come measure against the real thing in one of our five LA showrooms.
Only if the slats are spaced more than about three inches apart, or if the frame has just a few cross rails rather than a full slat set. Closely slatted panel beds with a center support take a mattress directly. Measure the gaps and you will have your answer in thirty seconds.
Same answer, and it is worth repeating because manufacturers are inconsistent about it. Check the slat spacing on the specific bed rather than assuming, and check your mattress warranty, which will usually state the maximum slat gap it allows.
Yes, provided the rails have a ledge or cross slats to carry it. If the bed already has close slats you do not need one, but adding a low-profile foundation is a common way to raise the mattress height if the bed sits lower than you want.
The same thing as a panel bed. The term "frame" just emphasises the structural parts: headboard, footboard and side rails, sold as a set and assembled in the room.
Generally yes. Solid wood panel beds with bolted rail connections and a center support leg hold up for decades. The weak points are widely spaced slats and missing center support, both of which are fixable. A center leg is worth adding to any queen or larger bed that did not come with one.
The same size as your mattress, but remember that a panel bed's outer dimensions run several inches larger than the mattress because of the rails and posts. Check our bed frame size guide and measure the room before ordering.
A panel bed is a long-term purchase, and the mattress on top of it matters more than the frame does.
