A sleigh bed is a frame with curved, outward-scrolling head and footboards. Here is where the style came from, how much floor space it really needs, and the mattress thickness that fits inside one.

A sleigh bed is a bed frame with a headboard and footboard that curve outward at the top, so the silhouette from the side resembles a sled or sleigh. That scrolled shape is the entire defining feature. Everything else, the material, the height, the presence or absence of storage, varies from one sleigh bed to the next.
It is one of the oldest bed shapes still in production, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong when you pair it with a mattress. Here is what to know before you buy one, or before you buy a mattress to go in one you already own.
Sleigh beds trace to French Empire and American Empire furniture in the early 1800s, when steam-bent wood made dramatic curves possible in solid timber for the first time. The look was heavy, formal and unmistakably expensive, which was the point. It fell in and out of fashion across two centuries and came back hard in the 1990s and 2000s in dark-stained hardwood, which is the version most people picture.
Today the shape shows up in three broad forms:
This is the single biggest surprise. Both the headboard and footboard curve outward and away from the mattress, so a queen sleigh bed can occupy 6 to 10 inches more length than a plain queen platform frame, and the widest point sits well above the floor where you cannot tuck anything under it. In a compact Los Angeles bedroom, that difference decides whether you can open a closet door. Measure the frame's overall footprint, not the mattress size, and give yourself walking clearance on at least two sides. Our guide to measuring your room for a bed frame covers the method.
Traditional sleigh beds were designed around thin mattresses. Drop a 14-inch hybrid plus a foundation into one and the mattress can sit level with or above the footboard scroll, which looks wrong and defeats the shape. Sleigh beds generally work best with either a low-profile foundation or a platform-style slat deck and a mattress in the 10 to 12 inch range. If you want something thicker, look for a modern sleigh frame with a taller footboard or a deeper inner rail. Our mattress thickness guide and how tall should a bed be both help you work out the total stack height before you commit.
A solid footboard means your feet stop where the wood is. Most people never notice, but if you are over six feet and you sleep on your back with your feet splayed outward, a closed frame feels more confining than an open-footed platform bed. Worth sitting in one before you buy.
A solid hardwood sleigh bed is genuinely stable. It does not rack, it does not creak, and it stays put. It is also awkward to move, hard to get up a narrow staircase, and not something you reposition on a whim.
The dark, heavily carved, glossy-finish sleigh bed of the early 2000s does read as dated, and that is what most people mean when they ask. The shape itself is not going anywhere. Upholstered sleigh beds in linen, boucle and performance fabrics are among the more popular frame styles being sold right now, because the curve softens a room that is otherwise full of straight lines.
If you own a traditional wood one and it feels heavy, the usual fixes are simple: lighter bedding, a rug that extends past the footboard, and lamps rather than a single overhead light. Repainting or restaining a solid frame is also a realistic weekend project in a way that replacing it is not.
A bed frame whose headboard and footboard both curve outward at the top, giving it the profile of a sleigh or sled. The style originated in French and American Empire furniture in the early 1800s and is made today in solid wood, upholstered and metal versions.
The heavy dark-stained wood version associated with the early 2000s looks dated to most eyes. The sleigh silhouette itself is very much current, mostly through upholstered frames in neutral fabrics, which keep the curve but lose the bulk.
Sometimes, but not usually without modification. An adjustable base needs clearance to lift the head and foot sections, and a fixed footboard often blocks the foot articulation. If the frame has removable slats and side rails deep enough to hold a base inside them, it can work. Many people instead place the adjustable base on its own legs and use the sleigh headboard alone. Check the specifications of any adjustable base against your frame's inner dimensions before ordering.
On many frames yes, since the footboard bolts to the side rails the same way the headboard does. Two things to check first: whether the side rails still connect to each other without it, and whether removing it leaves the rails unsupported at the foot end. Some designs rely on the footboard for structural rigidity, and on those it is not optional.
Stand the headboard and footboard upright and brace them, attach one side rail to each so the frame stands on its own, then square it before tightening anything fully. Fit the center support rail and its leg next, then lay in the slats. Tighten every bolt in stages rather than one at a time, which keeps the frame square. It is a two-person job, mostly because of the weight of the headboard.
The same standard sizes as any other frame: a queen sleigh bed takes a standard queen mattress. The variable is thickness, not length or width. Measure from the slat deck to the top of the footboard and stay under that figure if you want the mattress to sit inside the frame rather than above it.
A sleigh bed is a commitment to a shape, and the mattress has to work within it. If you are shopping for both, start with the frame's inner rail height, then pick a mattress and foundation combination that fits inside it. If the frame is already in your bedroom, measure before you shop, and bring the number with you.
Not sure what else is out there? Our guide to types of bed frames compares sleigh, panel, platform and storage designs side by side, and do you need a headboard is worth reading if you are on the fence about the whole category.
