GhostBed and Casper compared on construction, feel, cooling, support and price tier, plus which bed-in-a-box brands you can actually lie on before you buy.

GhostBed and Casper both ship a compressed mattress to your door, both built their reputations selling online rather than in stores, and both sit in a similar price range. Lie on them and they feel like two different philosophies. The right pick has less to do with which brand markets better and more to do with your sleeping position, your body weight, and how hot you run at night.
Choose GhostBed if you want a firmer, springier surface that sleeps cool and stays supportive under heavier bodies. It suits back sleepers, stomach sleepers and anyone who dislikes the sensation of sinking into foam. Choose Casper if you want a softer, more neutral foam feel with zoned support that cushions the shoulders while firming up under the hips. That profile tends to work better for side sleepers and for people whose lower back complains on a flat, uniform surface. If overheating is your main problem, GhostBed's cooling-focused models have the clearer edge.

GhostBed's signature is a comfort layer that behaves more like latex than memory foam. It springs back rather than holding an impression, which is why the bed feels quicker underneath you. Roll over and the surface follows immediately instead of lagging half a second behind. If you have ever felt stuck in a memory foam mattress, that is the difference you would notice first.
What it does well. Temperature is the standout. The brand has leaned into cooling covers and gel-infused layers across the lineup, and in practice these beds do run cooler than a comparable slab of dense memory foam. Support under heavier bodies is the second strength: the firmer baseline and denser support core mean less of the hammocking that lighter-built foam beds develop after a year or two. The responsive surface also makes it a sensible pick for combination sleepers who change position several times a night.
Where it falls short. The firmness that helps back and stomach sleepers works against side sleepers, especially lighter ones. If you sleep on your side and weigh under about 130 pounds, the core GhostBed may not let your shoulder and hip settle far enough in, and you will feel pressure at those two points. The all-foam models also do not have standout edge support, so sitting on the side to put shoes on gives more than you might expect.
Casper's defining feature is zoning. Instead of one uniform comfort layer, the foam is engineered to be softer where your shoulders land and firmer under the hips and lower back. The goal is to let the widest part of your upper body sink while keeping your pelvis from dropping out of alignment. It is a genuinely good idea and it is executed well.
What it does well. For side sleepers of average build, the zoning does what it claims. Shoulders get relief, hips stay lifted, and the spine holds a straighter line than it would on a flat foam surface. Motion isolation on the all-foam models is excellent, which matters if one of you gets up at five and the other does not. And Casper is far easier to find in person than most online-first brands, because it sells through retail partners as well as its own site.
Where it falls short. Heat is the recurring complaint on the base models. Foam that cushions well also traps warmth, and the entry-level Casper builds do not have much working against that. In a Los Angeles bedroom without air conditioning in September, that is a real consideration rather than a theoretical one. Durability under heavier sleepers is the other watch point: the softer comfort layers that make the bed feel good at first are also the layers that soften further over time.
Casper, in most cases. The zoned comfort layer is built for exactly this, and side sleeping is the position that punishes a too-firm surface hardest. GhostBed only makes sense for a side sleeper if you are heavier, since more body weight pushes further into the foam and finds the contour a lighter person never reaches.
GhostBed. Stomach sleeping in particular needs the hips held up in line with the shoulders, and a softer zoned foam lets the midsection drop into a slight arch. The firmer, springier GhostBed surface keeps you flatter. Our guide to the best mattress for stomach sleepers goes deeper on why firmness matters so much in that position.
GhostBed, or a Casper model chosen specifically for cooling rather than the base version. Do not assume a gel layer alone solves it. Airflow through the support core and a breathable cover matter more than a marketing name on the comfort layer.
Casper's all-foam models isolate motion better, so a restless partner is less disruptive. GhostBed's coil hybrids transmit a little more movement but give you firmer edges, which effectively widens the usable sleeping surface on a queen. Pick based on which problem annoys you more.
This one is genuinely individual. Zoned support helps some people a great deal and does nothing for others. What matters is that your spine stays in a neutral line in whichever position you actually fall asleep in, which is much easier to test lying down than to reason about from a spec sheet.
Both brands run entry-level models that undercut the rest of their lineups, and both discount heavily around the major sale weekends. At the very bottom of either range you are buying thinner comfort layers and a shorter useful life, so if you are choosing between an entry model now and a mid-range model in three months, waiting is usually the better value.
We do not carry GhostBed or Casper, so this comparison is not a sales pitch for either. What we can do is something neither brand makes easy, which is let you lie on an online-native mattress before you commit to it.
We stock Helix, Brooklyn Bedding and Birch in our showrooms. All three started as direct-to-consumer brands and all three compete directly with GhostBed and Casper on price and construction. If the Casper zoned-foam feel appeals, Helix builds hybrids across a range of firmness levels and its softer models deliver comparable shoulder relief with coils underneath for airflow. If GhostBed's firmer, springier, cooler profile is what you are after, Brooklyn Bedding's hybrids land in similar territory and are built in the company's own factory. If the pull toward GhostBed or Casper is really about wanting natural materials and better breathability, Birch uses wool and natural latex over pocketed coils and sleeps cooler than either.
If what you actually want is the deepest contouring on the market rather than a value bed in a box, that is a different conversation, and it points toward Tempur-Pedic or Stearns & Foster instead. Worth knowing before you spend twice on the wrong category.
Browse our memory foam mattresses and hybrid mattresses to see what that looks like, or read our complete bed-in-a-box guide if you are still weighing the format itself.
For the right sleeper, yes. It is a well-built value mattress that does two things better than most bed-in-a-box competitors: it sleeps cooler and it holds up better under heavier bodies. It is a poor match for a lightweight side sleeper who needs deep shoulder contouring, and no amount of positive review scores changes that.
Only conditionally. The core model runs firm, and side sleeping concentrates your weight on the shoulder and hip. Heavier side sleepers often get on with it because they push further into the foam. Lighter side sleepers usually find it too firm at the pressure points and are better served by a softer model or a different brand.
The zoned support is a real engineering feature rather than a marketing story, and it does what it claims for side and back sleepers of average build. The two consistent criticisms are heat retention on the entry-level all-foam models and softening over time under heavier sleepers. Which of those matters depends entirely on you.
Expect the range a mid-tier all-foam mattress usually delivers, which is shorter than a quality hybrid or a latex bed. The comfort layer is what wears out first, not the support core, so the symptom you notice is the bed feeling softer and less supportive rather than visibly collapsing. Our guide to how long mattresses last breaks it down by type.
Casper sells through retail partners as well as online, so some furniture and department stores carry floor models. We do not stock it. What we can offer instead is a side-by-side of Helix, Brooklyn Bedding and Birch in the same showroom, which tells you far more about what you personally like than lying on one bed alone. Our piece on Casper alternatives in Los Angeles covers the specific matchups.
No. Like most all-foam and hybrid mattresses, it needs a flat, evenly supported surface rather than a traditional sprung box. A platform bed, a solid foundation, or slats spaced no more than about three inches apart all work. A sagging old box spring will make any foam mattress feel worse and can void a warranty.
Twenty minutes on a mattress tells you more than twenty reviews. We have five showrooms across Los Angeles with Helix, Brooklyn Bedding, Birch, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster on the floor, same-day delivery across LA, and a free 120-night comfort guarantee so a wrong call is not a permanent one.
