GhostBed runs firm and responsive, Leesa runs medium and cradling. An honest look at feel, cooling, motion isolation and edge support, plus the brands you can actually test in person.

GhostBed and Leesa are two of the longest-running direct-to-consumer mattress brands, and shoppers comparing them are choosing between two all-foam beds that feel nothing alike. One leans firm and responsive. The other leans balanced and sinks in more. Picking wrong is the difference between waking refreshed and waking with a sore shoulder.
Choose GhostBed if you want a firmer, more responsive foam feel, you sleep on your back or stomach, or you move around a lot at night and dislike the stuck-in-the-bed sensation. Choose Leesa if you are a side sleeper or a lighter-weight sleeper who wants noticeable pressure relief at the shoulder and hip, and you prefer a softer, more cradling medium feel. Couples who disagree on firmness should look at each brand's hybrid version rather than the flagship all-foam model, since pocketed coils add edge support and a bit more lift.

GhostBed's signature is the top comfort layer, a responsive synthetic foam that behaves more like latex than memory foam. It springs back quickly instead of slowly conforming, which is why the bed reads firmer than its advertised firmness suggests. You reposition on top of a GhostBed rather than climbing out of a hollow.
What it does well: pushback and support. Back sleepers get a flat, even surface that keeps the lumbar curve from dropping. Stomach sleepers avoid the hip-sink that causes lower-back ache on softer beds. The responsive top also sleeps cooler than a thick slab of dense memory foam, which matters in a warm climate.
Where it falls short: side sleepers with pronounced shoulders and hips often find the flagship too firm. If you need the mattress to yield at two specific pressure points, a responsive surface works against you. Edge support on the all-foam models is average, so sleeping out to the perimeter brings some roll-off.
Leesa took the opposite approach, pairing a perforated top comfort layer with memory foam underneath for a medium feel that contours more gradually. The perforations keep air moving through the layer that would otherwise trap the most heat.
What it does well: pressure relief and quiet. The memory foam layer soaks up movement, so one partner turning over rarely wakes the other. Side sleepers in the average weight range tend to get the shoulder and hip accommodation they are shopping for. Leesa is also a certified B Corporation with an established mattress donation program, which matters to some buyers and is worth knowing about.
Where it falls short: heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers can bottom out the comfort layers and end up with their hips too low. The softer medium feel also makes repositioning harder, which combination sleepers notice. Like GhostBed's all-foam models, the perimeter is not its strength.
Lean Leesa. You want the comfort layers to let your shoulder drop and your hip settle so your spine stays in a straight line. A responsive, springy surface resists exactly that. Our guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers explains what to feel for when you test.
Lean GhostBed. Both positions need the hips held up rather than cradled, and the firmer, more responsive surface does that job. Stomach sleepers in particular should treat soft all-foam beds with suspicion.
It is close, and the model matters more than the brand. GhostBed's latex-like top layer traps less heat than dense memory foam, while Leesa attacks the problem with perforations and cover materials. Either brand's cooling model beats its own base model. If heat is your main complaint, read our guide for hot sleepers first.
Leesa wins on motion isolation. But if edge support matters, because one of you sleeps near the perimeter or you sit on the side of the bed to dress, skip both all-foam flagships and look at a hybrid. Pocketed coils around the perimeter are what create a usable edge. Our explainer on mattress edge support covers why this gets overlooked.
Neither brand is a treatment, and firmness alone is not the answer. What matters is whether the mattress keeps your spine neutral in your actual sleep position. Back and stomach sleepers with lower-back pain usually do better on the firmer GhostBed; side sleepers with shoulder or hip pain do better on the softer Leesa.
LA Mattress Store does not carry GhostBed or Leesa. Both are built to be bought online, sight unseen, which is the real risk in this comparison: the single most useful thing you can do is lie on a mattress for ten minutes in your own sleeping position before you spend the money. You cannot do that with either of these.
What you can do is test the online-native brands we stock in our five Los Angeles showrooms, where you can lie on four or five beds in an hour and ask staff which ones run hot. Same-day delivery covers most of LA, and our free 120-night comfort guarantee means the decision is not final if you get it wrong. See how to test a mattress in store for method.
Helix and Brooklyn Bedding both build hybrids across the firmness range, which covers the GhostBed-style responsive support and the Leesa-style cradling medium, with the pocketed-coil edge support neither all-foam flagship offers. Birch is the one to feel if you liked the idea of GhostBed's latex-like responsiveness, since it uses natural latex over coils. For deeper memory-foam contouring than Leesa delivers, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster are the step up, and you can compare them side by side in a single visit.
It is a well-built foam mattress with a distinctive responsive feel, and it suits back and stomach sleepers well. Whether it is good for you depends almost entirely on your sleep position. Side sleepers often find the flagship too firm for their shoulders and hips.
Leesa's all-foam flagship is a solid medium-feel bed with strong motion isolation, which is why it suits side sleepers and couples. Heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers are the two groups most likely to find it under-supportive.
An all-foam mattress of this type typically gives useful service for around seven to ten years, depending on body weight, rotation and whether it sits on properly spaced support. Softening in the comfort layers is what ends its life, not a dramatic failure. See how long mattresses last.
Leesa sells mainly online with limited retail placement, so hands-on testing is hard to arrange in most cities. If trying before buying matters to you, the practical move is to test a comparable bed from a brand with showroom presence. We stock Helix, Brooklyn Bedding and Birch for exactly this reason.
Generally it is not the first choice. The responsive top layer resists the deep contouring that a side sleeper's shoulder and hip need. Side sleepers who want a foam feel are usually better served by a softer medium bed or a hybrid with a plush comfort layer.
Take our two-minute sleep quiz and we will narrow the field to a handful of beds matched to your position, body type and temperature. Then come lie on them. Browse hybrid mattresses and memory foam mattresses to see what is in stock now.
