Helix Midnight and Midnight Luxe are both medium-feel hybrids built for side sleepers, but the Luxe adds zoned support, a thicker pillow top and stronger edges. Here is how to tell which one is worth your money.

Helix Midnight is the brand's best known mattress, and Midnight Luxe is the upgraded version of it. The two share a name, a target sleeper and a broadly similar medium feel, which is exactly why the choice confuses people. They are not the same bed with a different price sticker. The Luxe is built differently in three specific places, and whether those differences matter depends far more on your body and your sleeping partner than on your budget.
Buy the standard Midnight if you are an average weight side sleeper who wants a medium hybrid that handles pressure at the shoulder and hip, and you are happy with a straightforward foam over coils build. Buy the Midnight Luxe if you are heavier than about 200 pounds, if you sleep with a partner and use the full width of the bed, if you sit on the edge often, or if you run hot and want the cooling cover option. The Luxe is the better mattress in measurable ways. It is not automatically the better purchase.
| Helix Midnight | Helix Midnight Luxe | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Hybrid: memory foam comfort layers over a pocketed coil support unit | Hybrid: quilted pillow top plus memory foam over a zoned pocketed coil unit |
| Feel and firmness | Medium, roughly the middle of the scale, with a gentle sink into the top layers | Medium, slightly more cushioned at the surface because of the pillow top, with firmer support underneath |
| Best suited sleeper | Side and combination sleepers of average build | Side and combination sleepers, couples, and heavier sleepers who need more support |
| Motion isolation | Good. Pocketed coils move independently and the foam layers absorb most of the rest | Good, and marginally better thanks to the extra surface padding |
| Cooling | Coils allow airflow through the core. Cover is breathable but standard | Same airflow through the coils, with an upgraded cooling cover available as an option |
| Edge support | Adequate. Some compression when you sit right on the perimeter | Noticeably stronger. The perimeter is reinforced, so the usable sleeping surface feels wider |
| Zoning | Uniform coil layout across the surface | Zoned coil layout, firmer under the lumbar region and softer under the shoulders |
| Profile | Standard hybrid height | Taller, because of the added pillow top layer |
| Price tier | Mid-range | Premium |
| Trial and warranty | In-home trial and a limited warranty. Terms differ between the core and Luxe lines, so confirm current terms at purchase | In-home trial and a limited warranty, generally longer coverage than the core line. Confirm current terms at purchase |

The Midnight exists because most people who buy a mattress online are side sleepers who want something in the middle. It is a hybrid, so you get memory foam at the surface for pressure relief and a pocketed coil unit underneath for support and airflow. That combination is why it suits side sleeping: the shoulder and hip press in far enough to keep the spine straight, while the coils stop you from sinking into the trough that an all-foam bed of the same softness would create.
What it does well: pressure relief at a fair price, a feel that most people find immediately agreeable, and enough bounce that changing position at night is easy. It responds faster than a traditional slow-sinking memory foam mattress, which matters if you switch between your side and your back.
Where it falls short: the edges. Sit on the perimeter to put your shoes on and you will feel it give. If you share the bed and one of you sleeps close to the edge, that lost inches of usable surface is a real cost. It also has no zoning, so heavier sleepers sometimes report that the hips settle further than the shoulders, which is the beginning of the sagging feeling people complain about two or three years in.
The Luxe addresses those two complaints directly. The coil unit is zoned, meaning the coils under your lower back are firmer than the coils under your shoulders. In practice that keeps the hips from dropping while still letting the shoulder sink, which is the single most useful thing a mattress can do for a side sleeper who carries weight through the middle of the body. The perimeter is reinforced, so the edge holds up when you sit on it and the bed sleeps closer to its full width.
The third difference is the quilted pillow top. It adds an immediate softness at the surface that the standard Midnight does not have, on top of firmer support underneath. If you have ever wanted a bed that feels plush when you first lie down but does not let you sink, that is the effect.
Where it falls short: cost, and height. It sits in the premium tier, and the added profile means deep pocket sheets and a bed frame that does not put the sleeping surface uncomfortably high. If you are a lighter sleeper, under roughly 150 pounds, you may never compress the Luxe far enough to notice the zoning at all, in which case you have paid for engineering you are not using.
Both work. Lighter side sleepers are well served by the standard Midnight. If you are over about 200 pounds, the zoned coils in the Luxe do meaningful work keeping your hips in line, and the difference is easy to feel within a minute of lying down. Our guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers goes deeper on what to look for.
Both are hybrids, so both breathe better than an all-foam bed. The Luxe is the one to choose if cooling is a priority, because of the upgraded cover option. Worth saying plainly: neither mattress will fix a hot bedroom on its own. In an LA summer, a breathable cover and cotton sheets do more than any marketing claim about a cooling layer. See our notes on mattresses for hot sleepers.
Go Luxe. The stronger perimeter is the difference between a queen that sleeps like a queen and one that sleeps like a full. Motion isolation is good on both, so a restless partner is not the deciding factor here. Usable width is.
The zoning argument applies again. Firmer support under the lumbar region with give at the shoulder is the configuration most side sleepers with lower back pain do best on. That said, back pain is individual, and a mattress that suits one person's back aggravates another's. This is the case where lying on both for ten minutes each beats any amount of reading.
The standard Midnight is not a compromise product. It is a genuinely good hybrid, and the gap between the two is smaller than the price gap suggests for an average build sleeper. Spend the difference on a decent foundation and good sheets instead.
Yes. Both the Midnight and the Midnight Luxe are hybrids, built with memory foam comfort layers over a pocketed coil support core. That is what separates them from all-foam beds, and it is why they sleep cooler and feel more responsive than a comparable foam mattress.
It is worth it if you are heavier than average, share the bed, or sit on the edge regularly, because the zoned coils and reinforced perimeter solve problems you will actually encounter. If you are a lighter side sleeper with the bed to yourself, the standard Midnight gives you most of the same experience for less.
For side and combination sleepers of average build, yes. It is a well made medium hybrid with good pressure relief and better temperature behavior than an all-foam bed. Its weakest point is edge support, which matters most to couples and to anyone who sits on the side of the bed to dress.
No. It needs a flat, supportive surface, which means a solid platform, a slatted frame with slats no more than about three inches apart, or an adjustable base. A traditional sagging box spring is the one thing to avoid, because it undermines the coil unit and can void warranty coverage.
Shipped direct, yes, it arrives compressed in a box and expands over a day or so. Bought from one of our showrooms it does not need to be: we deliver it fully expanded, often the same day across much of Los Angeles, which skips the waiting and the off-gassing period entirely.
We stock Helix in our Los Angeles showrooms, which is unusual for a brand that sells mostly online. You can lie on the Midnight and the Midnight Luxe back to back and feel the zoning and edge difference for yourself rather than deciding from a spec sheet.
Most Helix comparisons end with a recommendation you cannot verify until the mattress is in your bedroom. Ours does not have to. Helix is one of the online-native brands we carry, alongside Brooklyn Bedding and Birch, so the two beds in this article are ones you can lie on in the same visit. Ten minutes on each, in your actual sleeping position, settles the question faster than any review.
If you are also weighing Helix against a premium memory foam bed, our Helix vs Tempur-Pedic comparison covers that matchup. Otherwise, browse our mattresses for side sleepers, or take the sleep quiz for a firmness recommendation based on how you actually sleep. Five LA showrooms, same-day delivery across much of the city, and a free 120-night comfort guarantee if you get it home and change your mind.
