Awara and Avocado are both natural latex hybrids, but they differ sharply on firmness, certification depth and price. Here is how they compare and which one suits your sleep position.

Birch NaturalStyled product scene
Awara and Avocado sit in the same small corner of the mattress market: natural latex over pocketed coils, wrapped in cotton and wool, sold mostly online. They look similar on a spec sheet and feel noticeably different in person. If you are cross-shopping the two, the real decision is about firmness, certification depth and how much you want to spend.
Buy the Avocado if certification matters to you and you want a genuinely firm, supportive surface. It is the more thoroughly certified mattress of the two. Buy the Awara if you want the latex hybrid feel at a lower price and you sleep on your side, where its softer medium-firm surface is more forgiving. Neither is a plush mattress, so if you want deep sink, look at memory foam instead.
| Awara | Avocado Green | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Natural Dunlop latex comfort layer over pocketed coils, cotton and wool cover | GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex over pocketed coils, GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool cover |
| Feel and firmness | Medium-firm, responsive, mild contouring | Firm as standard, responsive, minimal sink; an optional pillow-top version softens it |
| Best-suited sleeper | Side and combination sleepers, lighter and average builds | Back and stomach sleepers, heavier builds, anyone who wants a firm surface |
| Motion isolation | Moderate; latex is springy and transmits more motion than memory foam | Moderate; same trade-off, slightly better on the pillow-top version |
| Cooling | Good; coils move air and latex does not trap heat the way memory foam does | Good, for the same reasons, with wool helping manage moisture |
| Edge support | Solid, thanks to a reinforced coil perimeter | Solid, with a firmer overall surface that holds the edge well |
| Price tier | Entry to mid-range for a latex hybrid | Premium |
| Trial and warranty | Sold direct with a sleep trial and a long warranty; confirm current terms before ordering | Sold direct with a sleep trial and a long warranty; confirm current terms before ordering |

Awara's pitch is access. It brings natural Dunlop latex and a pocketed coil unit to a price that usually undercuts the certified-organic brands by a wide margin, and it does that without resorting to polyurethane foam in the comfort layer. The feel is classic latex hybrid: buoyant, quick to respond when you change position, and easy to move around on. Side sleepers generally get along with it better than they do with Avocado's standard build, because the medium-firm surface lets the shoulder and hip settle a little.
Where it falls short is certification depth and longevity signals. Natural latex is not the same claim as certified organic latex, and Awara's documentation is thinner than Avocado's. If you are buying specifically because you want third-party proof of what is inside the mattress, that gap matters. The latex layer is also on the shallow side, so very heavy sleepers may feel the coils sooner than they would on a thicker build.
Avocado is the more rigorous product. Its organic latex carries GOLS certification, the cotton and wool carry GOTS certification, and the company assembles its mattresses in its own California factory rather than importing a finished unit. For buyers who care about material provenance, that is a real and verifiable difference, not marketing texture. The mattress is also genuinely durable in the way good latex hybrids are: latex holds its shape far longer than cheap polyfoam.
The honest caveat is firmness. The standard Avocado is firm, firmer than most people expect from the photos, and side sleepers frequently find it unforgiving at the shoulder. The pillow-top version exists precisely because of this, but it adds cost to an already premium mattress. It is also heavy and awkward to move, and the price is simply high. If certification is not your priority, you are paying for something you may not value.
Lean Awara, or Avocado only in the pillow-top version. A firm latex surface does not let the shoulder drop, and side sleepers who force it usually end up adding a topper, which defeats the point of buying a good mattress.
Lean Avocado. The firm surface keeps the hips from dipping, which is exactly what stomach sleepers need and what most back sleepers prefer. This is the matchup where Avocado's firmness stops being a drawback and becomes the reason to buy it.
Either works. Both are latex over coils, which is one of the better constructions for airflow, and both use wool, which handles moisture well. In a warm Los Angeles bedroom this pairing outperforms an all-foam mattress by a clear margin.
Be realistic about motion. Latex is springy by nature, so neither of these isolates movement the way a dense memory foam mattress does. If your partner is restless and that wakes you, a latex hybrid is the wrong category, not the wrong brand.
Firmness alone does not fix back pain; alignment does. Back and stomach sleepers usually do better on the firmer Avocado, while side sleepers need the extra give Awara or a pillow-top build provides.
Awara, clearly. It delivers most of the latex hybrid experience for meaningfully less. Spending Avocado money only makes sense if the certifications are part of what you are buying.
We do not stock Awara or Avocado. We do stock several latex and organic hybrids that land in the same territory, and the advantage of buying one of them here is simple: you can lie on it for ten minutes before you commit, which is the only reliable way to find out whether a firm latex surface suits you.

Yes, if the firmness suits you. The materials and certifications are among the most rigorous in the industry and the build quality is high. The complaint that comes up most often is not quality but firmness: the standard model is firmer than many buyers expect, which is why the pillow-top version exists.
GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, a pocketed coil support unit, and a cover of GOTS-certified organic cotton with wool. There is no polyurethane foam in the comfort layer, which is the main structural difference between it and a conventional hybrid.
For the price, yes. It uses natural Dunlop latex over pocketed coils rather than the polyfoam you would normally find at that price, and it sleeps cool and responsive. The trade-offs are a thinner comfort layer and less certification documentation than Avocado offers.
It uses natural latex, wool and cotton, but natural and certified organic are different claims. If a specific certification such as GOLS or GOTS is what you are after, check the current documentation on the brand's own site rather than assuming it, and compare it against what Avocado publishes.
Latex has a faint natural odor when new, closer to rubber than to chemicals, and it typically fades within a few days. It is much milder than the off-gassing associated with memory foam, largely because there is no polyurethane foam in the comfort layer.
Avocado keeps a small number of its own showrooms, so in most cities you are buying unseen. If being able to test a latex hybrid before you buy matters, that is an argument for shopping a brand that is stocked in local stores. We keep comparable latex and organic hybrids on the floor in all five of our Los Angeles showrooms.
Firmness is the variable that decides this matchup, and it is the one thing you cannot judge from a product page. Take our sleep quiz for a starting point, then come lie on a few latex hybrids in person. Every mattress we sell is backed by our free 120-night comfort guarantee, and same-day delivery is available across most of Los Angeles.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
