Avocado builds with certified organic latex, wool and coils. Purple builds around a buckling-column gel grid. Here is how the two actually differ, and which sleeper each one suits.

Birch NaturalStyled product scene
Avocado and Purple sit at opposite ends of the modern mattress world. One is built from certified organic latex, wool and cotton over pocketed coils. The other is built around a stretchy polymer grid that collapses under pressure points and holds firm everywhere else. Both have loyal owners, and both get recommended constantly online, which is exactly why so many shoppers end up stuck between them. Here is an honest look at how they actually differ, and how to tell which direction suits your body.
Choose Avocado if you want natural materials, a firmer and more traditional supportive feel, and a mattress built to last with certified organic latex and wool. It suits back and stomach sleepers, people who care about what their bed is made of, and anyone who dislikes the sinking sensation of foam.
Choose Purple if pressure relief is your main problem and you sleep hot. The grid gives way under hips and shoulders while staying supportive under the lumbar, and the open channels move air better than almost any foam. It suits side sleepers and combination sleepers who want cushioning without heat buildup.
| Feature | Avocado | Purple |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Hybrid: certified organic latex comfort layers, organic wool and cotton, pocketed coil support unit | Buckling-column gel grid over a foam base; some models add pocketed coils for a hybrid build |
| Feel and firmness range | Firm and responsive by default, with softer pillow-top configurations available. Latex pushes back rather than hugs. | Medium, distinctive. The grid feels soft at pressure points and firm under the lower back at the same time. |
| Best-suited sleeper | Back and stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers, natural-materials buyers | Side sleepers, combination sleepers, hot sleepers, shoulder and hip pressure complaints |
| Motion isolation | Moderate. Latex is bouncy, so movement transfers more than with memory foam. | Good. The grid absorbs movement in individual columns rather than across the surface. |
| Cooling | Good. Latex sleeps cooler than memory foam, and wool helps regulate moisture. | Excellent. Open grid channels allow genuine airflow directly under the body. |
| Edge support | Strong, thanks to the coil unit and firm perimeter | Varies by model. All-grid builds are softer at the edge than coil-based ones. |
| Typical price tier | Premium, with organic certifications driving cost | Mid-range to premium depending on grid depth and whether coils are included |
| Trial and warranty | Long trial and warranty by industry standards; check current terms at purchase | Long trial and warranty by industry standards; check current terms at purchase |
| Where to buy | Primarily direct to consumer, with limited showroom presence | Direct to consumer plus selected retail partners |
Avocado's case rests on materials. The comfort layers are natural latex rather than petrochemical foam, the fire barrier is wool rather than a chemical treatment, and the covers are organic cotton. The brand holds organic certifications on the latex and the textiles, which is a meaningfully higher bar than a vague "eco-friendly" label. For buyers who have reacted badly to off-gassing from a foam bed, or who simply want to know what they are breathing for eight hours a night, that is a real differentiator.
Functionally, latex behaves differently from memory foam. It compresses and springs back fast, so you move on top of the mattress rather than settling into it. Paired with a pocketed coil unit, the result is a supportive, slightly buoyant bed with excellent durability. Natural latex is one of the longest-lasting comfort materials available.
Where it falls short: the standard build is genuinely firm, and side sleepers who need deep shoulder relief often find it unforgiving without the pillow-top option. It is heavy and awkward to move. It carries a premium price. And because the brand sells mostly online, actually lying on one before you commit is difficult in most cities.
Purple's grid is the most genuinely novel comfort material to reach the mass market in decades, and it earns its reputation. The hyper-elastic polymer is laid out in a grid of columns. Under light pressure the columns stay upright and support you. Under concentrated pressure, at a shoulder or a hip, the columns buckle sideways and let that body part sink. The practical effect is pressure relief in the spots that need it while the lumbar region stays held up, which is hard to achieve with a single foam density.
The open structure is also why Purple sleeps cool. Air moves through the gaps between columns instead of being trapped in closed-cell foam. In a warm Los Angeles bedroom without central air, that is not a marketing detail, it is something you feel in August.
Where it falls short: the feel is polarizing. Some people describe it as sleeping on a firm surface with a soft layer of something strange on top, and that is not everyone's idea of comfort. The grid adds significant weight. Entry-level all-foam-base models have softer edges than a coil bed. And the polymer is a synthetic material, so it is the wrong answer entirely for a natural-materials buyer.
Purple generally wins. Shoulder and hip pressure is precisely what the buckling grid is designed to solve. Avocado can work, but you want the pillow-top configuration rather than the standard firm build, and even then it is a firmer landing.
Both beat memory foam, and Purple leads. Latex plus wool regulates temperature well, but nothing in a mattress moves air quite like an open grid with gaps you can see through.
Purple isolates motion better. Latex is responsive by nature, which is pleasant for solo sleepers and less pleasant when a partner rolls over at 2am. If you go Avocado and motion is a concern, prioritize a model with a well-built pocketed coil unit.
This depends on the kind of pain. Lower back pain that improves on firmer surfaces often does better on Avocado, which keeps the hips from dropping. Pain that comes from pressure building at the shoulders and hips often does better on Purple. Our guide to sleeping with lower back pain walks through how to tell which pattern you have.
Purple's lower-tier models are the more accessible entry point. Avocado's cost is largely driven by certified organic materials, and there is not much room to discount that away without changing what you are buying.
Avocado, without much argument. If certified organic latex, wool and cotton are the point, no amount of grid engineering substitutes.
LA Mattress Store does not stock Avocado or Purple. We do stock beds that deliver each of these experiences, and you can lie on them in one of our five Los Angeles showrooms before deciding, which is the single most useful thing you can do when choosing between two beds that feel nothing alike.
For the Avocado experience, certified organic latex over coils, look at Birch, Savvy Rest and Harvest Green. These are genuine organic latex hybrids built on the same material philosophy, and Birch in particular is an online-native brand you can actually test in person with us. Browse our hybrid mattresses to see the range.
For the Purple experience, responsive pressure relief that does not trap heat, look at Helix and Brooklyn Bedding. Both are bed-in-a-box brands with cooling hybrid builds and a range of firmness options, and again, we have them on the floor. For the deepest contouring and pressure relief available at the premium end, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster are worth a few minutes each; see our luxury mattresses.
Every mattress we sell comes with our free 120-night comfort guarantee, and same-day delivery is available across Los Angeles on in-stock models. More context on the organic side of this decision is in our organic latex mattress guide and our breakdown of organic versus natural latex.
For the right sleeper, yes. They are well built, use genuinely certified organic materials, and latex is among the most durable comfort materials available. The main complaint is firmness. The standard build is firmer than most people expect, which is why the pillow-top configuration exists.
Purple does two things better than most mattresses: it relieves pressure at the shoulders and hips without going soft everywhere, and it sleeps cool. The feel is unusual, though, and a meaningful number of people try it and decide it is not for them. It is worth testing rather than ordering on reputation.
Certified organic latex comfort layers, organic wool used as a natural fire barrier, an organic cotton cover, and a pocketed coil support unit. The organic certifications cover both the latex and the textiles.
The signature layer is a hyper-elastic polymer formed into a grid of flexible columns. Beneath it sits a foam support base, and on some models a pocketed coil unit instead, which produces a hybrid build with firmer edges.
Avocado sells mainly online with limited showroom coverage, so in most cities you cannot test one before buying. If trying before you buy matters to you, the practical move is to test a comparable certified organic latex hybrid in person. We carry Birch, Savvy Rest and Harvest Green for exactly this reason. For more on lifespan expectations, see our guide on how long mattresses last.
The honest answer is that these two beds feel so different that reading about them only gets you so far. Take our two-minute sleep quiz for a shortlist based on how you actually sleep, or come lie on the real thing at any of our five LA showrooms and settle it in ten minutes.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
