WinkBed builds a traditional luxury hybrid with pocketed coils and a quilted top. Purple builds around a buckling gel grid that feels like nothing else. Here is how the two actually differ and who should buy which.

These two beds get compared constantly, which is a little strange, because they are about as different as two mattresses can be while sitting in the same price neighborhood. WinkBed is a recognizably traditional luxury bed: pocketed coils, a quilted top, the feel of a well-built hotel mattress. Purple is built around a sheet of hyper-elastic polymer formed into a grid of open columns, and it feels like nothing else on the market.
Most people who shop both are really asking one question: do I want a familiar plush-and-springy bed, or do I want to try the grid? Here is what separates them.
Buy the WinkBed if you want a classic luxury-hotel feel with strong edges and a firmness you can pick off a menu, and if you are a heavier sleeper, a back sleeper, or someone who sits on the edge of the bed every morning. Buy the Purple if pressure on your shoulders and hips is the problem you are solving, if you sleep hot, and if you are genuinely open to a surface that feels unfamiliar for the first week or two. If you want deep, slow, body-hugging contour instead, neither one is really your bed, and you should be looking at a memory foam mattress.
| WinkBed | Purple | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Hybrid: pocketed coil support core with foam and latex-style comfort layers under a quilted Euro-style top | Buckling-column gel grid over foam, in all-foam and pocketed-coil hybrid versions depending on the model |
| Feel and firmness range | Several firmness options plus a model built for heavier sleepers, all recognizably innerspring in character, with lift and bounce | One unusual feel across the line, soft at pressure points and firm everywhere else, with a springy rebound rather than a sink |
| Best-suited sleeper | Back sleepers, combination sleepers, heavier bodies, anyone who wants a familiar plush-top feel | Side sleepers with shoulder and hip pressure, hot sleepers, people who dislike the stuck-in-foam sensation |
| Motion isolation | Good for a coil bed, though not foam-quiet. Pocketed coils move independently | Very good. The grid absorbs movement locally instead of transmitting it |
| Cooling | Good. Airflow through the coil layer plus a breathable cover | Excellent. The open grid is mostly air, and nothing traps heat against the body |
| Edge support | Strong. Reinforced perimeter coils, easy to sit on the side | Softer edges on the all-foam versions, better on the hybrids |
| Typical price tier | Mid-range to premium | Entry-level for the base all-foam model, premium for the flagship hybrids |
| Trial and warranty | Both brands sell direct with a home sleep trial and a long warranty. Terms change, so confirm current details on the brand site before you buy | Same |
| Where to buy | Online direct, limited physical availability | Online direct plus some retail partners |
The WinkBed is a competent, conservative luxury hybrid, and that is a compliment. The pocketed coil core gives it genuine lift, so you sleep more on the mattress than in it. That matters for back sleepers and for anyone who changes position several times a night and does not want to climb out of a foam impression to do it.
Two things stand out. The first is edge support: reinforced perimeter coils mean you can sit on the side to put your shoes on without the mattress collapsing, and couples get the full width of the bed instead of a usable middle. The second is that firmness is a choice rather than a given. Picking a firmness level before you have slept on it is still guesswork, but at least the option exists, and the brand builds a reinforced model for heavier sleepers, which most online brands do not.
The shortcomings are the usual hybrid ones. It is a heavy mattress that one person will struggle to rotate. It is quieter than a cheap innerspring but not as still as foam, so a very light sleeper who wakes when a partner rolls over may notice. And because you are buying a firmness level sight unseen from a website, the gap between what you pick and what your body wanted is a real risk.
The grid is a legitimately clever piece of engineering, not a marketing gimmick. The polymer columns stay rigid under light, broad loads and buckle under concentrated ones, which means your hips and shoulders sink while your lumbar region stays supported. For a side sleeper with shoulder pressure, that behavior is hard to replicate with foam, and it is the single best reason to buy one.
Cooling is the other genuine advantage. The grid is mostly open air by volume, and air moves through it horizontally as well as vertically. In a warm Los Angeles bedroom in August, that is not a small thing. Motion isolation is also very good, because movement gets absorbed by the columns directly under it rather than traveling across the surface.
The honest downsides: the feel is polarizing, and people tend to either adjust to it within a week or never stop noticing it. The base all-foam model has noticeably soft edges. The grid adds real weight. And stomach sleepers often find that their hips drop into the grid more than they would like.
Purple has the edge on pure pressure relief at the shoulder. A softer WinkBed configuration also works, and will feel more conventional, but the grid handles concentrated shoulder load in a way foam and coils do not quite match. Our guide to the best mattress for side sleepers covers what to look for either way.
Purple, clearly. A coil hybrid like the WinkBed breathes well compared to all-foam, but the open grid is in another category. This is the comparison where the gap is widest.
It depends on which problem you have. If the issue is one of you waking when the other moves, Purple isolates motion better. If the issue is that you keep rolling toward each other or losing the edges of the bed, the WinkBed wins on edge support and usable sleeping surface.
Neither brand should be treated as a medical solution, and the right answer depends on your sleeping position and body weight more than on the brand. Back sleepers generally do better on the firmer, more supportive feel of a coil hybrid. Side sleepers with hip pain often prefer the grid. Both are better bets than an old sagging mattress, which is usually the actual culprit.
Purple's entry all-foam model is the cheaper way into either brand. The WinkBed starts higher and climbs. Just be aware that the budget Purple is a different mattress from the flagship hybrid, and reviews of one do not describe the other.
Yes. It uses a pocketed coil support core with foam comfort layers above it and a quilted top, which is the standard definition of a hybrid. The brand also makes an all-foam model, so check which one a given review is describing.
The signature layer is a hyper-elastic polymer formed into a grid of hollow columns that buckle under concentrated pressure. Underneath, depending on the model, there is either a foam base or a pocketed coil unit, which is what makes some Purple models hybrids and others all-foam.
Generally yes. The grid collapses under the shoulder and hip while staying supportive under the waist, which is exactly the behavior side sleepers need. Side sleepers who want a soft, enveloping feel rather than a responsive one often prefer foam instead.
The polymer grid itself is durable and resists the permanent body impressions that foam develops. Realistically, expect a lifespan in the same range as other quality mattresses, with the foam or coil layers underneath usually wearing out before the grid does. Our guide to how long mattresses last breaks down the signs to watch for.
Both are primarily direct-to-consumer, so in-store availability is limited and varies by market. That is the real trade-off with online brands: you are choosing a firmness from a web page and finding out whether you were right a few weeks later.
We do not carry WinkBed or Purple, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we do carry are online-native brands you can actually test in person: Helix and Brooklyn Bedding both build pocketed coil hybrids in a range of firmness levels, which is the closest thing in our showrooms to the WinkBed experience, and Birch adds a natural latex comfort layer with the springy, non-sinking response that people who like the Purple grid tend to be chasing. For deep contouring at the premium end, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster are the benchmarks.
