An honest comparison of Puffy and Casper bed-in-a-box mattresses: feel, cooling, edge support and who each one suits. Plus the online-native brands you can actually try in our LA showrooms.

Puffy and Casper are two of the most heavily advertised bed-in-a-box brands in the country, and shoppers compare them constantly because both promise the same thing: a foam mattress that ships compressed, arrives at your door, and comes with a long home trial. They are not the same bed, and the differences matter more than the marketing suggests.
Choose Puffy if you want a softer, more cushioned all-foam feel with pronounced sinkage, you sleep mostly on your side, and you value an unusually long trial and warranty. Choose Casper if you want a firmer, more neutral foam feel with zoned support under the hips, you switch positions during the night, or you want the option of a hybrid model with coils. Neither is a strong pick if you are a heavier sleeper who needs serious edge support, or a hot sleeper who has been unhappy with foam before. In those cases a hybrid with pocketed coils will serve you better.
| Puffy | Casper | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | All-foam in the core lineup: gel-infused memory foam comfort layers over a high-density polyfoam base. Higher tiers add more foam layers and, in some models, coils. | All-foam and hybrid options. Comfort foam over a zoned transition layer, on a polyfoam base or a pocketed coil unit depending on model. |
| Feel and firmness | Softer and more cushioned. Classic slow-responding memory foam hug with noticeable sinkage. | Firmer and more neutral. Faster response, less sink, easier to change position on. |
| Best suited sleeper | Side sleepers and lighter-weight sleepers who want pressure relief at the shoulder and hip. | Back sleepers, combination sleepers, and anyone who dislikes feeling stuck in a mattress. |
| Motion isolation | Excellent. All-foam construction absorbs movement very effectively. | Very good on the all-foam models, good on the hybrids. |
| Cooling | Gel infusion helps, but deep sinkage means more of your body is surrounded by foam. | Generally sleeps cooler thanks to more open foam and, on hybrids, airflow through the coils. |
| Edge support | Soft. Expect compression when you sit on the side. | Better than Puffy, especially on hybrid models with reinforced perimeters. |
| Typical price tier | Mid-range to premium, with frequent promotional pricing. | Entry-level to premium depending on model and whether you choose foam or hybrid. |
| Trial and warranty | Long home trial and a lifetime warranty on the mattress line. Confirm current terms at purchase. | Home trial of roughly three to fourteen months depending on model, with a limited warranty. Confirm current terms at purchase. |
| Where to buy | Primarily direct online. Limited physical availability. | Direct online plus some retail partners. |
Trial lengths, warranty terms and prices change often, so treat the table as a shape rather than a contract and check current terms before ordering.
Puffy built its reputation on a plush, enveloping memory foam feel. Lie down and you sink in; the foam takes a second or two to respond and then conforms closely around your shoulder and hip. For a side sleeper who has been waking up with a sore shoulder on a firm bed, that is a real fix, and it is the single thing Puffy does best.
Motion isolation is the other genuine strength: all-foam beds absorb movement better than almost anything else. Puffy also stands behind its product well on paper, with a long trial and a lifetime mattress warranty, allowing for the usual sagging-depth conditions every warranty carries.
Deep sinkage cuts both ways. Back sleepers often find their hips drop further than their shoulders, flattening the lower back curve, and stomach sleepers usually find it far too soft. Combination sleepers report the most friction, because turning over in a mattress that holds you takes effort.
Edge support is soft, so sitting on the side compresses noticeably and couples lose usable width. Cooling is adequate rather than excellent: the gel infusion helps, but the volume of foam around you works against it, which matters more in a warm Los Angeles bedroom than it does in Minnesota.
Casper's defining feature is zoned support: instead of one uniform transition layer, the mattress is firmer under the hips and softer under the shoulders, keeping the heaviest part of the body from sinking too far while still letting the shoulder settle. It works, and back sleepers generally get better spinal alignment on a Casper than on a plush all-foam bed.
The feel is neutral and responsive. You lie on a Casper rather than in it, which combination sleepers appreciate. Casper also gives you a real choice of construction, since the hybrid models add a pocketed coil unit for better airflow, better edge support and more bounce.
Side sleepers who need deep pressure relief sometimes find the standard Casper too firm at the shoulder, especially at the entry-level end. The neutral feel reads as "not enough cushion" to someone with a bony frame or a sensitive shoulder. The lineup is also large and the model names are similar, so it is easy to order the wrong tier. Warranty terms are conventional rather than generous.
Lean Puffy, or a higher-tier Casper rather than the entry model. Side sleeping concentrates weight on a small area at the shoulder and hip, so the comfort layer has to give way there. Too firm shows up as a numb arm or a sore shoulder within a week or two. Our guide to the best mattress for side sleepers has more detail.
Lean Casper. Zoned support and a faster-responding surface suit back sleeping and make position changes easier. Deep-hug memory foam is the wrong tool here, whichever brand makes it.
Lean Casper, specifically a hybrid. Coils move air in a way a solid foam core cannot. If you have owned an all-foam bed and found it warm, a gel infusion is unlikely to change that verdict, and it matters in a climate where bedrooms stay warm into October. See our cooling mattress guide.
Both isolate motion well, Puffy slightly ahead. The more useful question is edge support, because a soft perimeter shrinks the usable width of the bed. Casper hybrids beat either brand's all-foam models here. See our explainer on mattress edge support.
Neither brand is a treatment, and be sceptical of any mattress marketed as one. What helps is alignment: a surface holding your spine roughly where it sits when you stand well. For most people with lower back pain that means medium-firm with give at the shoulder, which points toward Casper's zoned approach or a hybrid rather than a deep-sinkage foam bed.
Casper's range starts lower, and both brands discount heavily and often, so the list price is rarely the real price. Do not let a discount decide the feel: a mattress that is 40 percent off and wrong for how you sleep is not a bargain. Our guide to how much to spend on a mattress puts the numbers in context.
Both brands are built around ordering a mattress you have never touched, and the trial is supposed to solve that. It only works if you go through with returning a bed you have slept on for two months, and plenty of people do not, because arranging pickup is a hassle and the mattress is "fine". A trial is a safety net, not a substitute for knowing.
Twenty minutes lying on a mattress in the position you actually sleep in tells you more than any review, including this one. Our guide on how to test a mattress in store explains the method, and our comparison of buying online versus in store weighs the trade-offs.
LA Mattress Store does not sell Puffy or Casper. We do stock several bed-in-a-box brands that compete directly with them, which means you can lie on the online-native feel before you commit to it:
All of these are on the floor in our showrooms, so you can try the zoned hybrid feel next to the deep memory foam feel in a single visit. That is the comparison that actually settles the question.
For side sleepers and lighter-weight sleepers who want a soft, cushioned memory foam feel, yes. It isolates motion well and the warranty terms are generous. It is a weaker choice for stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers who need firm support and strong edges, and anyone who has found foam beds too warm.
Casper's zoned support is a real engineering feature rather than marketing, and it suits back and combination sleepers well. The hybrid models add coils for better cooling and edge support. The main caution is that the lineup is broad and models differ meaningfully, so check that any review you read covers the model you are considering.
Casper has some retail distribution; Puffy is largely direct-to-consumer, so trying one in person is difficult in most cities. If in-person testing matters, the practical route is comparable beds you can actually lie on. Helix, Brooklyn Bedding and Birch are online-native brands stocked in our Los Angeles showrooms and cover the same territory.
Expect a life span in the same range as other quality foam and hybrid mattresses, roughly six to eight years of good support with normal use. All-foam beds soften before they visibly sag, so the signal is waking up stiff rather than a dip you can see. Our guide to how long mattresses last covers the signs.
Puffy isolates motion slightly better; Casper hybrids have better edge support and sleep cooler, which matters when two bodies generate heat in one bed. If your main complaint is being woken by a partner moving, lean Puffy. If it is overheating or running out of usable mattress width, lean Casper hybrid, or any hybrid with a reinforced perimeter.
Puffy and Casper are aimed at different sleepers, so the right answer depends on how you sleep rather than which brand runs better ads. Not sure which camp you are in?
