GhostBed and Purple take opposite approaches to the same problem. Here is how the gel grid and the latex-over-foam build actually differ, and which one suits your sleeping position.

GhostBed and Purple are two of the most recognizable bed-in-a-box names, and they sit on opposite sides of a real design divide. Purple built its reputation on a hyper-elastic polymer grid that buckles under pressure points. GhostBed stayed with foam and hybrid construction, using latex and gel memory foam for its responsiveness. Both ship compressed in a box, and they sleep nothing alike.
Pick Purple if you want a genuinely unusual feel: the grid flexes under your hips and shoulders while staying flat under your lower back, and it breathes better than almost any solid foam because air moves through the open columns. Pick GhostBed if you want a more familiar foam or hybrid feel with faster response than classic memory foam, and you would rather not spend a few weeks adapting to a novel surface. Hot sleepers do well on either, but for very different reasons. Side sleepers who want deep shoulder relief usually prefer the softer Purple models or a plusher GhostBed hybrid over the brand's firmer all-foam options.
| Feature | Purple | GhostBed |
|---|---|---|
| Core construction | Buckling-column gel grid over foam, with pocketed coils in the hybrid models | Latex and gel memory foam over support foam, with pocketed coils in the hybrid models |
| Feel | Distinctive: soft at pressure points, firm under lighter-loaded areas, with a springy rebound | Conventional foam feel with noticeable bounce from the latex comfort layer |
| Firmness range | Medium to medium-firm across most of the lineup | Medium-firm to firm on the all-foam models, softer options in the hybrid and luxe lines |
| Best suited sleeper | Back and side sleepers who run hot and want pressure relief without a sunken feel | Back and stomach sleepers, and anyone who wants a responsive foam bed rather than a slow-sinking one |
| Motion isolation | Good: the grid localizes movement, though the bounce is noticeable | Good on the all-foam models, slightly less so on the coil hybrids |
| Cooling | Excellent: open grid channels allow continuous airflow | Good: latex sleeps cooler than standard memory foam, and the hybrids add coil airflow |
| Edge support | Weaker on the all-grid models, better on the hybrids | Moderate on all-foam, noticeably better on the hybrid builds |
| Price tier | Mid-range to premium depending on the model | Entry-level to mid-range, with premium options at the top of the line |
| Trial and warranty | Sleep trial and limited warranty offered direct, terms vary by model | Sleep trial and limited warranty offered direct, terms vary by model |
| Where to buy | Direct online and selected retail partners | Direct online and selected retail partners |
Check current trial length, warranty terms and pricing with each brand before you buy. Those details change.
The grid is not a gimmick. A column of flexible polymer stays rigid under light load and collapses once the load passes a threshold, so your hips and shoulders drop in while your lumbar region stays supported. That is a different mechanism from memory foam, which softens with body heat and conforms gradually.
What Purple does well: airflow is the standout. There is no solid slab at the comfort layer, so heat does not get trapped the way it does on dense memory foam. Pressure relief at the shoulder is strong for a bed that does not feel soft. Response is immediate, which suits combination sleepers who change position several times a night.
Where it falls short: the feel polarizes people. The all-grid models have soft edges, so if you sit on the side of the bed to put on shoes you will feel the compression, and the mattresses are heavy and awkward to move. Because nothing else on the market feels like it, a showroom test matters more here than with almost any other brand.
GhostBed's signature move is putting a layer of latex above the memory foam rather than below it. Latex rebounds fast, so the surface pushes back instead of letting you settle in slowly.
What GhostBed does well: value is the clearest strength. The entry models land at a price point where you are usually choosing between thin foam beds, and the construction is better than that tier normally delivers. The latex layer sleeps cooler than a comparable all-memory-foam build, and the hybrid models add pocketed coils, which fixes the edge support.
Where it falls short: the firmer all-foam models are genuinely firm, and strict side sleepers often find the shoulder pressure too much without a topper. The lineup is also less differentiated than Purple's, which makes picking a single model harder than it should be.
You need the shoulder to drop without the hips following. Purple's grid handles this well because the collapse is localized. On the GhostBed side, go to the softer hybrid or luxe builds rather than the firm all-foam models. Our guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers walks through what to check.
This is the one axis where Purple has a structural advantage. Air moves through the grid continuously, with no dense layer to trap heat. GhostBed's latex comfort layer is cooler than standard memory foam but still a solid material. In Los Angeles, where a bedroom can sit above 75 degrees for months, that difference is worth taking seriously. Our cooling mattress guide covers what actually moves the needle on sleeping temperature.
Both isolate motion reasonably. Purple's grid absorbs movement locally, but it has a bounce a light sleeper may notice. GhostBed's all-foam models are quieter. If one of you gets up at 5am, the all-foam GhostBed is the safer call.
Neither brand is a medical solution. What matters is spinal alignment: your hips should not sink below the line of your shoulders and heels. Purple's grid holds the lumbar region up well. GhostBed's firmer models suit back and stomach sleepers who need a flatter surface. Talk to a doctor about persistent pain.
GhostBed wins here, clearly. The entry models cost meaningfully less than comparable Purple models, and the construction holds up. If you want the grid feel, there is no cheap version of it.
LA Mattress Store does not stock GhostBed or Purple. We do carry several online-native brands that solve the same problems, and you can lie on them before you decide instead of guessing from a website.
All five of our Los Angeles showrooms let you compare these side by side in one visit, and every mattress we sell comes with our free 120-night comfort guarantee. Same-day delivery is available across most of the LA area. If you have never tested a mattress properly, our guide on how to test a mattress in store is worth five minutes.
For the price tier, yes. The latex-over-memory-foam construction is better than most beds at the same cost, and it sleeps cooler than an all-memory-foam build. Match the model to your sleeping position rather than buying on brand reputation.
The firmer all-foam models generally are not. Side sleepers need the shoulder to sink, and a firm foam surface resists that. The softer hybrid and luxe builds are a much better fit, or pair a firmer model with a soft mattress topper.
They are good at what they are designed for: airflow and localized pressure relief. Whether you like the feel is personal in a way it is not with most mattresses. People who like it tend to like it a lot, and people who do not usually know within the first few nights.
If cooling and pressure relief are your two priorities and you have tested the feel and liked it, the price is defensible. If you have not lain on one, the risk is spending premium money on a surface you never adapt to.
This comparison cannot really be settled on a page. These two mattresses feel nothing alike, and the only reliable way to know which camp you are in is fifteen minutes lying down in your usual sleeping position. Come test the hybrid mattresses and memory foam mattresses we carry at any of our five LA showrooms, or start with our sleep quiz.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
