Lull and Casper are cross-shopped constantly. Here is how their foam builds differ in feel, cooling, edge support and price, plus what to buy instead if you want to test before committing.

Lull and Casper sit in the same aisle of the online mattress world: compressed into a box, shipped to your door, sold mostly without a showroom. They are priced close enough that plenty of shoppers end up toggling between the two tabs for a week. The differences are real, though, and they come down to how each brand builds its comfort layer and what that does to feel, heat and edge.
Pick Lull if you want a straightforward memory foam feel at the lower end of the price range, you sleep alone or with a restless partner, and deep pressure relief matters more to you than bounce. Pick Casper if you want a more responsive, less sinking foam feel, you change positions through the night, or you want the option of a coil version with better edge support. Hot sleepers and heavier sleepers should look hard at the hybrid models from either brand rather than the base all-foam ones.
| Lull | Casper | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | All-foam core lineup (memory foam comfort layer over transition and support foam); hybrid models with pocketed coils also offered | All-foam core lineup with zoned support foam; hybrid models with pocketed coils also offered |
| Feel and firmness range | Medium-firm, closer to a classic memory foam hug with noticeable contouring | Medium-firm, more neutral and responsive, less sink; firmer under the hips, softer under the shoulders |
| Best-suited sleeper | Side and back sleepers who want pressure relief and do not mind sinking in | Combination sleepers and back sleepers who want to move easily on the surface |
| Motion isolation | Strong on the all-foam models | Strong on the all-foam models, noticeably less so on the hybrids |
| Cooling | Gel-infused top layer helps, but it is still a foam bed that traps some heat | Open-cell and perforated foam layers plus coil airflow on the hybrids; generally the cooler of the two |
| Edge support | Soft at the perimeter, typical of all-foam | Soft on all-foam, meaningfully better on the hybrid versions |
| Typical price tier | Entry-level to mid-range | Mid-range to premium depending on model |
| Trial and warranty | Home trial plus a long limited warranty; terms change, so confirm at purchase | Home trial plus a long limited warranty; terms change, so confirm at purchase |
| Where to buy | Online, direct | Online, direct, plus some third-party retail |
Lull built its reputation on being the uncomplicated option. The core mattress is a layered foam build: a memory foam comfort layer with gel infusion on top, a transition layer, and a dense support base. There is no zoning, no fancy cover technology, no long spec sheet. That simplicity is the point, and it is why Lull usually lands at the bottom of the bed-in-a-box price range.
What it does well: pressure relief. If your shoulder or hip aches on a firmer bed, the memory foam layer lets those points settle in rather than pushing back. Motion isolation is excellent, which is the single most underrated feature for couples. A partner getting up at 5am mostly disappears into the foam.
Where it falls short: it sleeps warm, the edges compress when you sit on them, and it is slow to respond. If you roll over a lot, you will feel the foam take a beat to catch up. Heavier sleepers may also find the support base does not hold the hips as high as they would like over the long run.
Casper made zoned support its signature: the foam under the hips and lower back is firmer than the foam under the shoulders, so heavier body parts do not sink as far while the shoulder still gets room to settle. In practice this produces a flatter, more neutral spine line than an unzoned foam bed, and it is genuinely useful for back sleepers and for people who switch between back and side.
What it does well: responsiveness and temperature. Casper's foams are built to be more breathable and springier than a traditional memory foam, so you sit on top of the bed more than in it. The hybrid models add pocketed coils, which fix the two classic foam weaknesses at once by improving airflow and firming up the perimeter.
Where it falls short: price and the hug. Casper generally costs more than Lull at comparable sizes, and if what you actually want is that slow, enveloping memory foam sensation, Casper will feel too firm and too flat. The hybrid versions also give up some motion isolation compared to the all-foam builds.
Lull is the more forgiving choice at the shoulder and hip. Casper's zoning helps, but its surface stays firmer, so lighter side sleepers in particular may feel pressure build under the shoulder.
Casper, and specifically a Casper hybrid. Foam is foam, and both brands trap some heat, but coils and more open foam structures move air in a way a solid foam block cannot. This matters more in Los Angeles than most places, where bedrooms stay warm well into October and many older buildings have no air conditioning at all.
All-foam Lull for motion isolation. If one of you needs edge support to sit on the side of the bed to get dressed, a Casper hybrid is the better compromise.
Casper's zoned support is the more deliberate design for spinal alignment, and back sleepers usually do better on it. Side sleepers with hip pain often do better on Lull. Neither is a medical solution, and if pain is persistent it is worth talking to a clinician rather than shopping your way out of it.
Lull, clearly. It is the cheaper bed in most size and model comparisons, and the gap is not trivial.
We do not carry Lull or Casper, and the honest reason to say so is this: the biggest problem with both is that you are buying a feel you have never felt. A home trial helps, but returning a mattress is a hassle, and most people talk themselves into keeping something that is not quite right.
We stock three online-native brands you can lie on in our showrooms before you commit. Helix is the closest analogue to Casper in spirit, with hybrid builds tuned to different sleep positions and firmness levels, and it solves the same combination-sleeper problem with coils instead of zoned foam. Brooklyn Bedding builds its own mattresses in the United States and covers the same value-to-mid price band Lull occupies, with more firmness choices. Birch is the pick if you want natural latex and wool rather than polyurethane foam, and it runs cooler than either of the beds in this comparison.
If you want the deep, slow contouring that draws people to memory foam in the first place, done properly, Tempur-Pedic is the reference point. It is a different price tier, and it is worth twenty minutes on one to know whether that feel is what you actually want before you buy a cheaper imitation of it.
Yes, for the right sleeper. Casper's zoned support foam produces good spinal alignment for back sleepers and combination sleepers, and the hybrid models handle heat and edge support well. Dedicated side sleepers and anyone who wants a deep memory foam hug will find it too firm and too flat.
Lull is a solid value pick in the entry-level bed-in-a-box category. Pressure relief and motion isolation are its strengths. Cooling, edge support and long-term support for heavier sleepers are its weak points. It is a good mattress for the money rather than a good mattress outright.
Plan on roughly six to eight years for an all-foam bed-in-a-box, and a little longer for a hybrid, before the comfort layer softens enough that you notice. Heavier sleepers and beds used every night land at the shorter end of that range. Rotating the mattress head to foot a couple of times a year helps.
Casper is sold online and through a handful of retail partners, so availability depends on where you are. We do not carry it. If you are in Los Angeles and want to test the same category, our showrooms carry Helix, Brooklyn Bedding and Birch, which are the online brands most often cross-shopped against Casper.
No. Like most bed-in-a-box foam mattresses, Lull needs a flat, continuous surface underneath: a platform bed, a solid foundation, or slats spaced no more than about three inches apart. A traditional sagging box spring will let the foam dip and can void a warranty. Our foundations page covers the options.
If this comparison has you leaning one way but not confidently, that is the normal outcome of shopping for feel on a screen. Our bed in a box guide covers what the category does and does not do well, and our Casper alternatives guide goes deeper on what to buy instead if you have already ruled Casper out.
Otherwise, take our sleep quiz for a firmness recommendation in a couple of minutes, or come test hybrid mattresses at one of our five Los Angeles showrooms. Same-day delivery covers much of the city, and every mattress comes with a free 120-night comfort guarantee, so the decision does not have to be final the day you make it.
Start with a mattress type that suits how you sleep, then compare the feel in person.
