Helix vs nectar: which bed-in-a-box is right for you?

Helix builds hybrids with pocketed coils and a model for almost every sleep style. Nectar builds all-foam beds at a lower price. Here is how they actually compare.

Helix Midnight Luxe with its white quilted top and charcoal branded sidewall in a styled bedroom

Helix Midnight LuxeStyled product scene

Helix and Nectar are two of the most searched bed-in-a-box brands in America, and they are not really the same kind of mattress. Helix builds hybrids: pocketed coil units with foam comfort layers on top, sold across a lineup of models tuned to different sleep positions and body weights. Nectar builds all-foam beds: memory foam over a poly support core, sold in a much smaller lineup at a lower price. Both ship compressed in a box. That is where the similarity ends.

Full disclosure: we sell Helix and we do not sell Nectar. We say so up front, and we have tried to be straight about where Nectar is the smarter buy.

Quick verdict

Pick Helix if you want coils under you: better airflow, more responsive support, stronger edges, and a specific model matched to how you sleep. It suits heavier bodies, hot sleepers, combination sleepers and anyone who dislikes the sunk-in feeling of memory foam.

Pick Nectar if your budget is the deciding factor and you actively like a slow, contouring, cradled memory foam feel. It is a solid entry-level to mid-range all-foam bed with excellent motion isolation, which makes it a reasonable choice for light to average weight side sleepers and for guest rooms.

Side by side

Feature Helix Nectar
Construction Hybrid: pocketed coil support unit under foam comfort layers. Luxe and Elite tiers add a quilted pillow top All-foam: memory foam comfort layer over a polyfoam support core
Feel and firmness range Broad. Models run plush through firm, so you choose the feel Narrow. A medium-firm memory foam feel across the core lineup, with a slow-response, cradling sink
Best-suited sleeper Combination sleepers, heavier bodies, couples with different preferences Light to average weight side and back sleepers who like memory foam contouring
Motion isolation Good. Pocketed coils move independently, but transfer slightly more motion than solid foam Excellent. Its strongest single trait
Cooling Better. Air moves through the coil layer; upper tiers add cooling covers Weaker. Foam traps heat, though gel infusions help
Edge support Stronger. Reinforced perimeter coils let you sit and sleep near the edge Softer. Foam perimeters compress, so usable surface feels smaller
Typical price tier Mid-range, rising to premium at the Luxe and Elite tiers Entry-level to mid-range

Helix on its own terms

The idea behind Helix is fit. Instead of one mattress meant to work for everyone, the brand builds a family of hybrids and points you at the one matched to your sleep position and body type. Softer models put more pressure-relieving foam over the coils for side sleepers; firmer models pull that foam back for stomach and back sleepers who need the hips held up. Each model then steps up through standard, Luxe and Elite tiers.

What it does well. The pocketed coil unit is the reason to buy it. Coils push back rather than simply compress, so changing position feels easier. Air moves through that coil layer instead of sitting trapped in solid foam, which matters a great deal in a Los Angeles summer. Edges hold up. And because the coils are individually wrapped, a heavier partner does not tip you toward the middle of the bed the way an old-style connected innerspring would.

Where it falls short. Choice becomes a burden online. Picking between a dozen model and tier combinations from a website quiz is hard, and getting it wrong means a return. The higher tiers climb well past entry-level pricing. And if what you want is the deep, hugging feel of true memory foam, a Helix hybrid will feel too springy no matter which model you pick.

Nectar on its own terms

Nectar built its reputation on one thing: a lot of memory foam mattress for not much money, shipped to your door with a long trial. The construction is straightforward, a memory foam comfort layer over a denser polyfoam support core, finished in a quilted cover.

What it does well. Motion isolation is excellent. If your partner gets up at 5am and you do not, an all-foam bed like this is hard to beat. Pressure relief at the shoulder and hip is real, and for a side sleeper under roughly 200 pounds it can be very comfortable. And it is affordable. Not every sleeper needs a premium mattress, and pretending otherwise does readers no favors.

Where it falls short. Heat is the recurring complaint with all-foam beds, and gel infusions only go so far. Heavier sleepers tend to sink through the comfort layer and bottom out against the support core, which shows up as lower back ache after a few months. Edge support is soft, and stomach sleepers usually find their hips dropping out of line.

How to choose between them

If you sleep on your side

Both can work. Nectar's memory foam contours nicely around the shoulder and hip if you are light to average weight. A softer Helix model gives similar pressure relief with coils underneath, which keeps your spine from bowing if you are heavier or switch positions at night. Above roughly 200 pounds, go hybrid.

If you sleep hot

This one is not close. Coils create an air gap that solid foam cannot replicate, so Helix has the structural advantage before any cooling cover is added. If your bedroom sits at 78 degrees in August, which describes most of Los Angeles, weigh this heavily.

If you share the bed

If your main problem is being woken by movement, Nectar's all-foam build wins outright. If your problem is that you want different firmnesses, or one of you is much heavier, Helix wins: the coils support each body independently.

If you have back pain

Support matters more than softness. Back pain usually eases when the hips stay in line with the shoulders, which a coil unit does more reliably over time than a foam core, particularly for heavier bodies. That said, plenty of people sleep pain-free on foam. The honest answer is that the material matters less than the fit, and fit is very hard to judge from a website.

If budget is the constraint

Nectar is the cheaper bed and there is no point dressing that up. If the realistic choice is a Nectar now or two more years on a mattress that is already failing you, buy the Nectar. If you can stretch, a hybrid usually lasts longer before it develops a body impression.

Where LA Mattress Store fits in

We stock Helix in our showrooms, which is the part we think actually helps you. Bed-in-a-box shopping asks you to commit to a mattress you have never touched. You can skip that: lie on a Helix Midnight or a Twilight for ten minutes in your normal sleep position and you will know more than any comparison article can tell you.

If the Nectar feel is what appeals to you, we carry other online-native brands with a similar foam-forward character, including memory foam models from Brooklyn Bedding. If you want organic materials in the same price bracket, Birch is worth lying on. And if what you really want is the deepest contouring available, that is Tempur-Pedic territory rather than either brand here. We have five Los Angeles showrooms, offer same-day delivery ($100 upgrade, order by 4pm) on in-stock beds, and back every mattress with a 120-night comfort guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Are Helix mattresses good?

They are well-built hybrids with a real idea behind them: match the model to the sleeper rather than sell one universal bed. The construction is competitive with hybrids costing considerably more. The main risk is buying the wrong model for your body, which is why trying one in person is worth the trip.

Are Nectar mattresses good?

For the money, yes, with caveats. They deliver strong motion isolation and genuine pressure relief for lighter side and back sleepers. Heavier sleepers, hot sleepers and stomach sleepers are the groups most likely to be disappointed, and those complaints are consistent enough to take seriously.

Where can I try a Helix mattress in person?

Helix sells mainly online, but we carry it in all five of our Los Angeles showrooms, so you can lie on the actual model before you commit. That is unusual for a bed-in-a-box brand and it removes most of the guesswork.

Do Helix and Nectar mattresses come in a box?

Both are compressed, rolled and shipped in a box by default, and foam typically needs 24 to 48 hours to fully expand before it reaches its intended feel. Buy from a local showroom instead and delivery usually arrives uncompressed and ready to sleep on. Our bed-in-a-box guide covers both routes.

Do Helix or Nectar mattresses have fiberglass?

One of the most common questions asked about both brands, and the answer depends on the specific model and cover rather than the brand as a whole. Never remove a mattress cover regardless of what it is made of. Ask for the fire barrier material in writing before you buy, and read our explainer on fiberglass in mattresses.

How long do Helix and Nectar mattresses last?

A well-made hybrid generally outlives an all-foam bed at a similar price, because coils resist permanent compression better than foam. Expect a shorter useful life from an entry-level all-foam mattress under a heavier sleeper. See our guide to how long mattresses last.

The short version

Nectar is the value all-foam pick for lighter sleepers who love a cradled feel and want to spend less. Helix is the better mattress for most people who can afford it, especially if you run hot, share a bed, weigh more than average, or move at night. Still not sure?
