Nectar and Zinus both sell memory foam in a box at low prices, but they are built to very different standards. Here is how they compare and who each one suits.

These two brands sit at opposite ends of the same shelf. Both sell memory foam mattresses in a box, both are bought mostly online and sight unseen, and both are shopped by people who do not want to spend a fortune. But Zinus competes at the absolute bottom of the market and Nectar competes just above it, and the gap between those two positions is bigger than the price difference suggests.
Buy the Zinus if the bed is temporary or occasional: a guest room, a first apartment, a rental you are furnishing, a kid's room, or a bed you expect to replace in a few years. It is the cheapest way to get a sleepable foam mattress delivered to your door.
Buy the Nectar if this is the bed you sleep on every night. The thicker comfort layers, the better foam density and the longer trial and warranty terms are what you are paying the difference for, and over eight years rather than three, that difference works out cheaper per night. Neither brand is the right answer if you have chronic back or hip pain, if you sleep hot enough that it wakes you, or if you weigh more than about 230 pounds, and we get into why below.
| Nectar | Zinus | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | All-foam: gel memory foam comfort layers over a polyurethane support core. A pocketed coil hybrid is also offered. | All-foam: memory foam infused with green tea extract and charcoal over a support core. Hybrids and metal and wood bed frames are also sold. |
| Feel and firmness | Medium firm with a noticeable memory foam hug. Slow response, body-conforming. | Varies by model and thickness. Thinner models feel firm and flat, thicker ones softer. Less contouring overall. |
| Best-suited sleeper | Side and back sleepers of average weight who like sinking in | Lighter sleepers, back sleepers, occasional use, teenagers |
| Motion isolation | Very good. This is what all-foam construction does best. | Good. Also all-foam, so movement does not travel far. |
| Cooling | Gel infusion and a breathable cover help. Still an all-foam bed, so airflow is limited. | Minimal. Green tea and charcoal are odor control, not cooling. |
| Edge support | Modest. Typical of all-foam beds, the perimeter compresses when you sit on it. | Weak. The edge gives noticeably on thinner models. |
| Price tier | Value to lower mid-range | Entry level, often the cheapest option in its size |
| Trial and warranty | Markets an unusually long home trial and a lifetime warranty | Standard limited warranty, shorter return window |
| Where to buy | Direct online and through selected retail partners | Mostly large online marketplaces and big-box retail |
Terms on both change, so confirm the current trial length and warranty wording at checkout rather than relying on any article, including this one.
Nectar's advantage is layer quality. The comfort layers are thicker and denser than what you get at the Zinus price, and density is the spec that predicts how long a foam mattress keeps its shape. A denser comfort layer resists the body impression that forms under the hips and shoulders, which is the thing that actually ends a foam mattress's useful life. The hug is the other difference you feel immediately: Nectar contours closely, which genuinely helps side sleepers whose shoulder and hip need somewhere to go.
Where it falls short: all-foam construction restricts airflow, and gel infusion slows the warm-up rather than preventing it. In a Los Angeles bedroom that is still 78 degrees at midnight in September, that matters. The slow response also means you sink in and have to climb out a little when you change position, which combination sleepers often dislike. And edge support is modest, so the usable sleeping surface is a little smaller than the mattress.
It is worth being straight about this: Zinus is not a bad product, it is an inexpensive one, and those are different things. For a guest room used twenty nights a year, paying four times as much buys you very little. Zinus gets a supportive foam surface into a room for less money than almost anyone else, ships it compressed so one person can carry it upstairs, and sells bed frames and foundations in the same transaction, which is a real convenience when you are furnishing from nothing.
Where it falls short: comfort layers are thin, and on the cheaper models very thin, so you feel the firmer core sooner than you should. Durability is the honest weak point. Expect a noticeably shorter useful life than a mid-range foam bed, especially above average body weight. Edge support is weak. And the returns process on a marketplace purchase is a different experience from a brand's own trial program.
One point shoppers ask about specifically: Zinus mattresses have historically used a fiberglass inner fire barrier, which drew consumer complaints and litigation when covers were removed and the fibers escaped. The company has since stated it moved away from fiberglass on newer models. If this matters to you, check the specific model's materials before you buy, and never unzip the cover of any mattress that uses a fiberglass barrier. Our guide to fiberglass in mattresses explains what the barrier is for and which materials replace it.
Nectar, clearly. You need the shoulder and hip to sink while the waist stays supported, and that takes comfort layers with real depth. A thin Zinus will leave you resting on the support core, which usually shows up as a sore shoulder in the morning.
Neither, honestly. Both are solid foam, and solid foam restricts the airflow that carries heat away. If overheating is your main problem, a pocketed coil hybrid will outperform any all-foam bed at the same price. That is a construction difference, not a brand difference.
Either works for motion isolation, which is foam's strongest suit. Nectar is the better pick on width of usable surface, because weak edge support on a shared queen effectively costs you a few inches on each side.
Be careful with both. Budget foam softens unevenly, and a mattress that develops a dip under your hips pulls your spine out of line all night. Our guide to mattresses for back pain covers what to look for, and the short version is that support that holds up for years matters more than how a bed feels in the first week.
Zinus, and there is no reason to feel bad about it. Just buy it for what it is. A cheap mattress used for four years is a reasonable purchase. A cheap mattress expected to last ten is not. Our bed-in-a-box guide covers what the format does well and where it stops.
We do not carry Nectar or Zinus. What we do carry is the thing most people shopping this comparison actually want, which is a bed-in-a-box they can lie on before they buy it.
Brooklyn Bedding and Helix are both online-native brands built in the same category, and we stock both in our showrooms. You can spend ten minutes on each in your own sleeping position instead of guessing from a product page and hoping the trial period works out. For natural materials, Birch sits in the same bracket. If you want the deep contouring that draws people to Nectar in the first place but built to last, Tempur-Pedic is the reference point, and Stearns and Foster is the traditional-luxury alternative. Browse our memory foam mattresses or, if cooling is your issue, our hybrid mattresses.
For the money, yes. Nectar delivers genuine memory foam contouring and strong motion isolation at a value price, which suits side sleepers and couples of average weight. It is not the right pick for hot sleepers, heavier sleepers or anyone who needs a mattress to hold its shape for a decade or more.
They are good value rather than good mattresses in absolute terms. For a guest room, a rental, a teenager or a short-term apartment, a Zinus does the job honestly for very little money. As a primary bed slept on every night, the thin comfort layers and shorter lifespan catch up with you.
Historically many Zinus models used a fiberglass inner fire barrier, which is a common and legal way to meet federal flammability rules but causes problems if the cover is removed. The company has stated it moved away from fiberglass on newer models. Check the materials listed for the specific model you are considering, and do not unzip the cover of any mattress.
Nectar, if you are choosing between only these two, because deeper comfort layers over a denser core hold alignment longer. Neither is a strong choice for persistent pain. What helps is a support core that does not develop a dip, and that is where spending more actually changes the outcome.
Foam feel is the single hardest thing to judge from a description, and it is the thing people most often get wrong when they buy online. Ten minutes on two mattresses, in the position you actually sleep in, settles it faster than any amount of reading.
Come do that at any of our five Los Angeles showrooms. We deliver same day across most of the metro on in-stock models, and every mattress comes with a free 120-night comfort guarantee, so a firmness call you make in the store is not one you are stuck with.
