High resilience foam, usually shortened to HR foam, is one of those terms that shows up on a spec sheet with no explanation, right next to a price increase. It's a real distinction and a meaningful one, but it's also frequently used as marketing gloss on foam that doesn't qualify. Here's what the term actually means, how HR foam behaves under your body, and when it's worth paying for.
All three of the common mattress foams, standard polyurethane, memory foam and HR foam, are polyurethane. What separates them is cell structure and chemistry.
HR foam is made with a more irregular, open cell structure than conventional polyfoam. That irregularity is what produces its defining property: resilience, meaning how much energy the foam returns when you compress and release it. Drop a steel ball onto a slab of HR foam and it bounces back noticeably higher than it would off standard polyfoam. Foam manufacturers measure this directly, so high resilience is a technical grade, not a mood.
The practical translation: HR foam pushes back. It responds almost immediately when you shift position, rather than slowly conforming and slowly recovering.
These two get conflated constantly. Density describes how much material is packed into a given volume, and it predicts durability and cost. Resilience describes how the foam springs back, and it predicts feel. A foam can be dense and slow (memory foam), dense and bouncy (HR foam), or low-density and bouncy (cheap furniture cushion foam that flattens in two years).
