Reflex foam is a high-density polyurethane foam that springs straight back instead of slowly moulding to you. Here is how it differs from memory foam, where it belongs in a mattress, and who it actually suits.

Reflex foam is a firm, high-density polyurethane foam used as a support layer in mattresses and toppers. The name describes what it does: press it and it springs straight back, rather than slowly moulding to you the way memory foam does. It is a British and European trade term more than an American one, so you will see it constantly on UK mattress listings and rarely on US spec sheets, where the same material usually gets called high-density polyfoam or support foam.
That naming confusion is most of the reason people search for it. Once you know reflex foam is a support material rather than a comfort material, everything else about it makes sense.
Reflex foam is a closed-cell or semi-closed-cell polyurethane foam manufactured at a higher density than the cheap polyfoam used in disposable furniture. Density is the number that matters, and it is measured in pounds per cubic foot in the US and kilograms per cubic metre in the UK. Higher density means more material per unit of volume, which means the foam resists compression harder and takes longer to break down.
The defining behaviour is fast recovery. Apply pressure and reflex foam compresses immediately, then releases immediately when the pressure comes off. There is no lag, no body impression left behind after you get up, and no heat-triggered softening. If you want the technical background on why density predicts lifespan, our guide to high density foam covers it, and what polyurethane foam is explains the base material.
| Reflex foam | Memory foam | |
|---|---|---|
| Response to pressure | Immediate compression, immediate recovery | Slow compression, slow recovery |
| Response to body heat | None; feel stays consistent | Softens as it warms, so feel changes through the night |
| Contouring | Broad and shallow | Close and deep around the body's curves |
| Typical role in a mattress | Support core or base layer | Comfort layer near the surface |
| Motion isolation | Moderate; movement spreads across the surface | Excellent; movement is absorbed locally |
| Heat | Warm, but less so than dense memory foam | Warmest of the common foams unless gel or open-cell treated |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
The short version: reflex foam holds you up, memory foam wraps around you. Read what memory foam is for the other half of that comparison.
These get conflated, and they are not the same thing. High resilience foam is a different chemistry with a more open cell structure, a bouncier response and better durability at a given density. Reflex foam is the cheaper, denser, flatter-feeling cousin. If a listing mentions HR foam specifically, that is usually a step up. Our guide to high resilience foam explains the difference.
In a well-built bed, reflex foam is underneath something. Its job is to stop you sinking through to the base, hold the mattress shape at the edges, and give the comfort layers above it something stable to sit on. That is a real job and it is done well.
The problem is the mattresses where reflex foam is the whole bed. An all-reflex mattress with a thin quilted cover is cheap to build and it feels like sleeping on a firm board. There is nothing wrong with the material; it is being asked to do work it was never designed for. When someone says they hated a reflex foam mattress, this is almost always the bed they are describing.
You will also find reflex foam sold as the firm side of a dual-sided topper, and as the core of budget orthopedic mattresses. Bear in mind that orthopedic is a marketing label, not a medical certification.
It is a sensible choice if you sleep on your back or stomach, you like firm surfaces, you are furnishing a guest room, a rental or a first apartment, and budget is the binding constraint. Our firm mattresses cover that territory.
Look elsewhere if you sleep on your side, you have shoulder or hip pain, you share a bed with someone restless, or you sleep hot. In those cases the money is better spent on a hybrid with pocketed coils, or on memory foam if contouring is the priority. Our mattress materials guide compares every option side by side.
Polyurethane, the same base chemistry as most mattress foams. What separates it is density and cell structure: it is manufactured denser and with a more closed cell structure than standard polyfoam, which is what gives it the firm feel and quick rebound.
Neither is better in general, because they do different jobs. Reflex foam supports; memory foam contours. In the best mattresses they are used together, with reflex or high-density foam as the base and memory foam above it. Comparing them head to head only makes sense if you are choosing between two cheap all-foam beds, and then the answer depends entirely on your sleep position.
A reflex foam support layer under decent comfort layers is good. An entire mattress made of nothing but reflex foam and a thin cover is firm, cheap and hard on side sleepers. Check what is above the reflex layer before you judge the bed.
Polyurethane foams release volatile organic compounds when new, which is the source of that chemical smell on a freshly unwrapped mattress. It fades over days to a few weeks. Look for CertiPUR-US certification, which tests foam for heavy metals, formaldehyde and certain flame retardants, and let a new mattress air out in a ventilated room before you sleep on it.
It is a redundant phrase, since reflex foam is high density by definition, but manufacturers use it to signal a denser grade than their standard offering. Ask for the actual density figure in pounds per cubic foot or kilograms per cubic metre. A number beats an adjective every time.
It can help if your pain eases on firm surfaces and you sleep on your back. It is usually the wrong choice for side sleepers with hip or shoulder pain, because it resists the localized sinking those joints need. Our guide to the best mattress for back pain goes into detail.
The foam core itself is durable, but the thin comfort layers typical at this price tier soften long before the core does, and that is what you notice. Expect less life than from a pocket-coil hybrid or latex bed. Rotating it regularly buys real time.
Firmness is the hardest thing to judge from a description, and reflex foam is firm in a specific, unfamiliar way. Come lie on a firm foam bed next to a pocket-coil hybrid at any of our five Los Angeles showrooms and the difference will be obvious in about two minutes. Not sure where to begin?
