The short answer is usually no. Most Salvation Army Family Stores decline used mattresses and box springs, and the ones that accept them are the exception rather than the rule. The longer answer matters, because Salvation Army donation policy is not set nationally. It is set by the regional division and often by the individual store, which is why you will find people online insisting both that the answer is yes and that the answer is no. They are both telling the truth about their own zip code.
Why so many locations say no
Three reasons, and none of them are about the charity being fussy.
- Bed bugs. One infested donation can contaminate a warehouse and the inventory in it. The risk is asymmetric: accepting a hundred clean mattresses gains a store very little, and accepting one infested mattress can cost it a great deal. Most operations have concluded the math does not work.
- Resale regulation. Many states regulate the resale of used bedding, requiring sanitization and specific labeling before a used mattress can legally be sold. California is one of them. Complying is a real operational burden for a thrift store, so declining is simpler.
- Space and economics. Mattresses are bulky, slow to move and low margin. Floor space in a thrift store earns far more holding furniture, clothing and housewares.
Goodwill applies similar reasoning for similar reasons, which we cover in does Goodwill take mattresses. If you were planning to try one and then the other, expect the same answer twice.
How to find out for your location in five minutes
- Search for your nearest Salvation Army Family Store or donation center rather than the national site. Local pages list what that location accepts.
- Call and ask two specific questions: do you accept used mattresses at all, and do you accept them at the door or only by scheduled pickup? The answers are often different.
- If the answer is yes, ask what condition standard applies. Stains, tears, sagging, odor and missing law tags are common disqualifiers.
- Ask whether the box spring and frame can come too. Some locations that decline mattresses will still take a frame.
Do not load the mattress into a truck before you have that confirmation. Being turned away at the dock with a queen in the back of a pickup is the common failure here.
Does Salvation Army pick up mattresses?
Where a location accepts large items at all, free scheduled pickup is often part of the service and is typically arranged online or by phone, usually for furniture and appliances. Mattresses are frequently excluded from that list even when other large furniture is included. If pickup is the only way you can move the item, confirm that mattresses specifically qualify before you book the slot.
What to do instead
If your mattress is genuinely clean and still comfortable, there are better homes for it than a thrift chain:
- Local shelters and transitional housing programs. Some accept mattresses in good condition, particularly when they are nearly new. Policies vary as much as they do at thrift stores, so call first. Our guide to donating a mattress in Los Angeles lists the kinds of organizations worth trying.
- Furniture banks and refugee resettlement groups. These often have a direct need for beds and fewer resale constraints, because the item goes to a household rather than a sales floor.
- Someone you know. Unglamorous, but a student or a first apartment is often the right destination for a bed with a few good years left.
If the mattress is worn out, donation is the wrong frame entirely. A sagging mattress is not a gift, and passing it along just moves the disposal problem to someone with fewer resources.
Recycling is usually the right answer
Mattresses are roughly eighty to ninety percent recyclable by weight. Steel springs, foam, fiber padding and wood all have downstream uses, and a mattress sent to landfill is both the worst environmental outcome and, in much of California, an avoidable one.
California funds a statewide mattress recycling program through a fee collected on every new mattress and box spring sold, which pays for free drop-off at participating sites and collection events. That is the fee you see itemized on your receipt, and it is worth using what you already paid for. We explain how it works in our note on the California mattress recycling fee, and the practical logistics of getting an old bed out of an apartment are covered in how to dispose of a mattress in Los Angeles.
City bulky item collection is the other route. Los Angeles residents can schedule large item pickup through the city, and surrounding municipalities run their own versions with their own rules and limits. Check current terms with your city rather than assuming, since collection schedules and item limits change.
The easiest option if you are replacing the bed
If the reason you are researching this is that a new mattress is arriving, let the delivery handle it. We remove the old mattress and box spring when we deliver the new one, so the problem is solved in the same visit rather than becoming a weekend project involving a borrowed truck. Details are on our delivery page, and we offer same-day delivery across Los Angeles on most in-stock beds.
Frequently asked questions
Does Salvation Army accept mattresses?
Most locations do not. Acceptance is decided regionally and sometimes store by store, so a nearby Family Store may take them while another twenty minutes away will not. Always confirm with the specific location before transporting anything.
Will Salvation Army take mattresses that are in good condition?
Good condition helps but does not override policy. Where a location declines used bedding outright, it declines it regardless of condition, because the reason is usually regulatory and logistical rather than cosmetic. Where a location does accept mattresses, condition becomes the deciding factor and stains, tears, odor or a missing law tag will typically disqualify it.
Does Salvation Army pick up mattresses?
Free furniture pickup is offered in many areas, but mattresses are often excluded from the eligible item list even where other large furniture qualifies. Confirm that mattresses are included before scheduling.
Can I donate a mattress to the Salvation Army if it still has the tag?
The law tag matters only at locations that accept mattresses in the first place, where it is often required because it identifies the materials and manufacturer. Its presence does not change the policy of a location that declines bedding.
Does Salvation Army take used mattresses that have been sanitized?
Professional sanitization does not generally change a store level policy, and the cost of having it done usually exceeds the value of the donation. If your goal is keeping the mattress out of a landfill, recycling achieves that more reliably and at no cost in most of California.
