Mattress sizes are standardized. Duvet sizes are not. Two queen duvets from two brands can differ by six inches in width, and that difference is the gap between a bed that looks made and a bed that looks like someone pulled a blanket onto it. Worse, duvets are often sold in combined sizes, full and queen in one bag, king and California king in another, which is convenient for manufacturers and confusing for everyone else.
So the useful skill is not memorising a chart. It is knowing how to work out the size you need from the bed you actually own.
Typical duvet dimensions by bed size
These are the sizes you will see most often in the United States. Treat them as the common range rather than a rule, and check the specific product before you buy.
| Size | Mattress dimensions | Typical duvet dimensions | Approximate drop per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 x 75 in | 66 to 68 x 86 to 88 in | 14 to 15 in |
| Twin XL | 38 x 80 in | 68 x 90 in | 15 in |
| Full / Double | 54 x 75 in | 80 to 84 x 86 to 90 in | 13 to 15 in |
| Queen | 60 x 80 in | 88 to 92 x 90 to 94 in | 14 to 16 in |
| King | 76 x 80 in | 102 to 108 x 90 to 94 in | 13 to 16 in |
| California King | 72 x 84 in | 102 to 108 x 96 to 98 in | 15 to 18 in |
Notice the pattern: duvet length tracks the mattress fairly closely, while duvet width is enormously larger than the mattress. That is deliberate. The width has to cover the bed and then hang down both sides.
The only calculation you need
Drop is how far the duvet hangs past the edge of the mattress on each side. Work it out like this:
(Duvet width minus mattress width) divided by 2 = drop per side.
A 90 inch duvet on a 60 inch queen gives you 30 inches of overhang, which is 15 inches per side. Whether that is right depends on one thing almost nobody accounts for: how thick your mattress is.
- A low-profile mattress around 8 to 10 inches thick needs roughly 12 to 14 inches of drop for the duvet to reach past the bottom edge and look intentional.
- A standard 11 to 13 inch mattress wants about 15 to 17 inches.
- A thick pillow-top or a mattress sitting on a foundation can easily be 18 inches or more off the slats, and at that point a standard duvet in your bed size will look short on both sides.
This is why so many people with a tall bed assume they bought the wrong size. Usually they bought the right size for the mattress and the wrong size for the mattress plus foundation.
The fix: size up
If your bed sits high, buy one size up and ignore the label. A king duvet on a queen bed is a common and perfectly sensible choice. It gives you the drop, and it solves the other problem couples have, which is one person taking all the covers. The only thing to watch is that your duvet cover must match the insert, not the bed.
Duvet, insert, or cover: which size are you buying?
Three things get called a duvet and they are not interchangeable.
- The duvet or insert is the filled part, the one with down, feathers or synthetic fill inside. This is the item whose size determines everything else.
- The duvet cover is the removable case. It should match the insert dimensions, give or take an inch or two. A cover noticeably larger than its insert leaves the fill shifting around in empty corners. A cover noticeably smaller compresses the fill flat and kills the loft you paid for.
- A comforter is filled and finished in one piece with no removable cover, and it is usually sized a little differently from a duvet insert in the same nominal size. If you are weighing the two, our comparison of duvets versus comforters covers the practical differences.
The rule worth remembering: match the cover to the insert, and match the insert to the bed. Buying a cover sized to your mattress rather than to your insert is the single most common duvet-sizing mistake.
European sizes are different
If you are buying from a European or Scandinavian brand, the sizes will not line up with US labels. European duvets are measured in centimetres and a European king is not a US king. Some European systems also assume each sleeper has a separate single duvet rather than one shared piece, which is why a set may arrive as two narrow duvets instead of one wide one. Convert the centimetre dimensions and compare them against your mattress width rather than trusting the size name.
How to measure before you buy
- Measure your mattress width and length. Do not assume, especially on an older bed.
- Measure mattress height, from the slats or foundation top to the top of the mattress, including any topper you use.
- Decide how far down the side you want the duvet to fall. Most people want it to cover the mattress edge and hang a few inches below.
- Add your mattress width to twice that desired drop. That is your target duvet width.
For length, you generally want the duvet to reach the top of the mattress with enough left to fold back under the pillows without leaving feet exposed. Tall sleepers on a California king should pay attention here, since the extra four inches of mattress length is exactly where duvets come up short.
A note on warmth and fill
Size and warmth are separate decisions, and in Los Angeles the warmth decision matters more than most guides admit. A heavy winter-weight down duvet is miserable here for most of the year. A lightweight or all-season fill, paired with breathable sheets, is usually the better buy. See linen versus cotton sheets and what thread count actually means for the layer underneath.

Frequently asked questions
What size duvet do I need for a queen bed?
A queen duvet, typically around 88 to 92 inches wide by 90 to 94 inches long, suits a standard queen mattress. If your mattress is thicker than about 13 inches, or sits on a foundation, size up to a king duvet so it still hangs properly over the sides.
What size duvet for a king bed?
A king duvet, usually 102 to 108 inches wide. King and California king duvets are frequently sold as one combined size, which works because the two mattresses differ in length and width in opposite directions, but check the length if you have a California king and you are tall.
Is a duvet insert the same size as the duvet cover?
They should be very close, within an inch or two. Match the cover to the insert, never to the mattress. A cover that is much larger lets the fill bunch and shift; one that is much smaller flattens the loft.
Can I use a king duvet on a queen bed?
Yes, and it is a common deliberate choice. It gives extra drop on a tall mattress and reduces cover-stealing between two sleepers. The tradeoff is more fabric pooling on the floor on a low bed, and you will need a king duvet cover to go with it.
What are duvet sizes in centimetres?
Roughly: twin around 173 x 224 cm, queen around 229 x 234 cm, king around 264 x 234 cm. European sizing uses its own system and the names do not map onto US names, so compare actual dimensions rather than labels when buying from an overseas brand.
Why does my duvet look too small?
Almost always mattress height. A duvet sized for the mattress width alone will look short once that mattress is thick, topped or sitting on a foundation. Measure the full height of the bed and size up if the drop does not clear the bottom edge.
Should the duvet hang over the end of the bed?
Not usually. Most duvets are sized to reach the foot of the mattress with little or no overhang at the end, since the drop is designed for the sides. If you want coverage past your feet, prioritise length and consider sizing up.
