Support and pressure-relief scores are our editorial estimates, not manufacturer or lab ratings. Comfort varies. They are construction estimates, not weight-capacity or load-test ratings.

Firm mattressesHybrid mattressesCouples guidance

Firmness should fit the individual.

The authors discuss earlier findings suggesting firmer surfaces may suit some people with higher BMI. Their own study tested 12 young adults with normal-range BMI during 90-minute naps, so it does not establish the best firmness for heavier sleepers.

Heavier sleeper questions, answered.

Is firm always better?
No. Firmness is a feel preference, not a capacity rating. Compare actual models in your usual sleeping position and check the stated support requirements separately. Try your shortlist in person.
How do I check weight capacity?
Ask for the manufacturer's stated guidance for the exact model: whether the figure is per person or a total, which sizes it covers, and whether the mattress, base and bedding are included. If no figure is published, treat the capacity as not verified and ask our team before choosing.
Does thickness determine support?
No. Height describes the build, not its support or capacity. A taller profile can carry a deeper comfort layer, but support comes from the core and the base underneath. Compare the support construction of each model.
Which base works with this mattress?
Check the mattress maker's support requirements and the base's own rating separately. A base carries its own capacity; check whether that figure includes the mattress. Compare bases and foundations or adjustable bases, then ask us to confirm the pairing.
What if two sleepers have different preferences?
Try the mattress together and compare how each of you feels supported. If you disagree on firmness, a compatible split setup lets each of you choose. See our guidance for couples.
What does the comfort exchange cover?
One same-size comfort exchange is available after at least 30 nights and within 120 nights of delivery. There is no exchange fee. Bring the mattress back and pick up the replacement yourself at no charge, or choose pickup and redelivery by our team for $100 total. Pay any increase for a higher-priced replacement; there is no refund of the difference for a lower-priced one. Existing exclusions apply. It is not an unconditional refund.
