Your sleep position matters.

Cleveland Clinic cautions that stomach sleeping can strain the back, neck and shoulders. Its guidance explains why side or back sleeping may be worth considering.

Stomach sleeper questions, answered.

Is extra firm always better?
No. Compare the actual mattress, surface cushioning and your own comfort. A firmness label alone does not determine fit.
Is firmness the same as support?
Firmness describes surface feel. The materials and support system also affect how a mattress responds beneath you; compare actual models rather than treating firmer as automatically better.
Memory foam or innerspring?
Compare the specific models: memory foam and innerspring builds cushion you differently and respond differently when you change position. A construction label alone does not predict personal comfort.
What if I change sleep positions?
Try the mattress in each position you regularly use. If you also sleep on your side, compare shoulder and hip cushioning as well.
How does the comfort exchange work?
One same-size comfort exchange is available after at least 30 nights and within 120 nights of delivery. There is no exchange fee. Bring the mattress back and pick up the replacement yourself at no charge, or choose pickup and redelivery by our team for $100 total. Pay any increase for a higher-priced replacement; there is no refund of the difference for a lower-priced one. Existing exclusions apply.

About mattresses for stomach sleepers at LA Mattress

What Stomach Sleepers Need From a Mattress

Stomach sleeping concentrates weight at the hips. On a soft mattress the hips sink below the chest, arching the lower back into the position that produces morning stiffness. The fix is a firm to medium-firm surface , roughly 6 to 8 out of 10, that holds the hips level with the shoulders so the spine stays neutral all night.

Best Mattress Types for Stomach Sleepers

  • Firm hybrids: a pocketed coil core with a thin, denser comfort layer is the most reliable choice. The coils keep the hips up; the top layer takes the pressure off ribs and knees.
  • Firm latex: responsive and supportive with a bit more surface give than an extra-firm innerspring, and it sleeps cool.
  • Dense memory foam, used carefully: only firmer foam builds work. Plush memory foam lets the hips burrow, which is exactly what a stomach sleeper must avoid.
  • Extra-firm innerspring: a traditional option that works well for lighter stomach sleepers who find hybrids too cushioned.

Firmness by Body Weight

Lighter stomach sleepers (under about 130 lb) can go medium-firm, around 6, since they will not press deeply into the surface. Average builds do best at 6.5 to 7.5. Heavier stomach sleepers (230 lb and up) should look at 7 to 8 with reinforced coils; see our mattresses for heavy people collection for builds designed for exactly that.

The Pillow Matters More Than You Think

A thick pillow forces a stomach sleeper's neck into rotation and extension at the same time. Use a thin, low-loft pillow, or none at all, and consider a second flat pillow under the hips to reduce lower-back arch on a mattress that is slightly too soft.

Is a firm mattress good for stomach sleepers?

Yes. Firm to medium-firm is the recommended range because it keeps the hips from sinking and the lower back from arching. Truly extra-firm surfaces suit heavier stomach sleepers best; lighter sleepers can find them uncomfortable at the ribs.

Why does my back hurt after sleeping on my stomach?

Usually because the mattress lets your hips sag, arching the lumbar spine for hours at a time. A firmer mattress and a thinner pillow are the two highest-impact changes. Persistent pain is worth discussing with a doctor; this is general guidance, not medical advice.

Can stomach sleepers use memory foam?

Only firmer, denser builds. Soft memory foam creates the hip-sink problem. If you love the feel of foam, choose a firm model or a hybrid with a thin foam layer over coils.

Try Them in Person

Stomach sleepers need a firmer, flatter surface than any other sleep position. When you sleep face-down, your hips are the heaviest point, if they sink into the mattress, your lower back arches into a hammock shape that strains the lumbar spine all night. The fix is a mattress firm enough to keep your hips level with your shoulders, holding the spine in a straight line.

The right firmness for stomach sleepers. Firmer than for back or side sleepers, typically 7-8 on a 10-point scale (most brands call this "firm"). The goal is minimal hip sink: you want to lie on top of the mattress, not in it. If you can feel your lower back arching or you wake with lumbar ache, the bed is too soft for your sleep position. This is the one position where "too firm" is rarely the problem.

Which materials work best for stomach sleepers. Firm hybrids (a strong pocketed-coil base with a thin comfort layer, coils resist hip sink better than deep foam); firm innerspring (the traditional answer, bouncy, supportive, keeps you on the surface); and firm latex (responsive support that doesn't let the hips bottom out). Avoid plush memory foam, the deep contouring that helps side sleepers is exactly what lets a stomach sleeper's hips sink and the back overextend.

Pair a firm mattress with a thin, soft pillow, stomach sleepers want 2" of loft or less, or no pillow at all, so the neck isn't cranked upward. A tall pillow on a firm bed reintroduces the spinal strain you just solved. Not sure if you're truly a stomach sleeper or a combo sleeper who starts face-down?
